Any fellow air rifle enthusiasts here?
Just bought a new Gamo Swarm Maxim in .177 caliber.
Looking for a scope upgrade.
What are your suggestions for a scope in the 3-9x32 range that will
Hold up to the gas piston and double recoil?

Slam gun... look it up. You can make one yourself that shoots 12 gauge shotgun shells.

All you need is a nail, a length of 3/4 ID gas fitting pipe, a slightly larger pipe, and a thread on cap for it. You could make a better one if you can weld. But a functional shotgun can be made in about 20 minutes even without welding.

True, but you can't make a quiet one, and a 12 gauge is a bit much for a squirrel.

They might have changed the laws on these the last few years but you can buy air rifles in the US that will fire a .38 special slug about 1000 feet per second. 10 years ago it was even legal to put a can on it without a class III license since it was not technically a firearm according to ATF rules.

All that might have changed. You should look into it. But you can get air guns near as powerful as a mid caliber handgun if you want to pay a little more for it. And you can make them quiet if you want to.

Seneca Dragon Claw Dual
.50 · 679 fps

[link to www.airgundepot.com (secure)]

This is the exact same set-up that Cameron from TWANGnBANG uses and reviewed on his channel. This includes the incredibly powerful .50 cal Dragon Claw PCP air rifle, a 6 pack of .50 cal Air Bolts and a 3-9x32 Bug Buster IR scope. A perfect scope to pair with the Air Bolts as you?ll never be hunting farther than 50 yards out so this 3-9 power is perfectly matched for Air Bolt hunting. And with the illuminated reticle it will help with your target acquisition in low light. Truly a hunters set-up, it's the Dragon Claw Twang N Bang Air Bolt Combo.

For best accuracy I have a Stoeger 800 fps .177

[link to usa.stoegerairguns.com (secure)]

It will kill a squirrel or crow at 50 yards or more, proven...

I also have a Gamo .177 1300 fps with 10 rnd magazine, but it needs heavy pellets to be accurate...It's actually overpowered...

Pump and Co2?

Those are two different things...

Co2 starts at 2000 psi just like a pellet gun, single pump...

A 10 pump air rifle will reach 700 fps

Re: Any fellow air rifle enthusiasts here?
A very viable option to consider for basic small game hunting, A modern day air gun is indeed powerful and accurate at much longer ranges than in the past.

Large caliber air rifles are capable of greater ballistics than the 45acp round from a handgun.

Pricy? Yes, but considering ammo cost, and tighter and tighter legalities of owning a firearm these days, the modern air rifle has come of age, and you don't need to do federal 4473 paperwork to acquire one. One can be purchased online, and headed to your mail box in minutes.

Some of these rifles are perfectly capable of taking large game at close range.

Get familiar with them, they are now a worthwhile weapon to own.

My oldest son had a big angry tom cat move into his fenced in backyard and take over...Their little dog was starving because the cat ate all its food.

My son called me up and asked if i would get rid of it. I said sure...When I got there, he had already shot it with a kid's bb gun trying to sting its ass, but it went under the house and went to the farthest corner...barely any light in the crawl space...

I took my Stroeger .177 800 fps pellet rifle, and with my cell phone light, I saw his glowing eyes at 50' or so, 16 yards...Laying in the prone position with one hand on the rifle and one also aiming the cell light, I fire for between his eyes and caught the right eye...he was down and couldn't move...Then I had to drag his big dead ass out LOL

I remember my Daisy Red Ryder that I got when I was about 4. It was about as tall as I was. I had to put the end on the ground and put my weight on the lever to cock it. I had some cap pistols too.

I have had a 22cal Gamo mach 1 whisper fusion for many years. I changed the factory scope out with a budget scope, NIKKO STIRLING MOUNTMASTER 4-12X50 IR AO. I also have a budget light and a lazer witch makes it the perfect varmint gun for night hunting. I have shot skunks, possums, coons with it, during the middle of the night and didn't disturb the neighbors.

The gun seems to like the Crossman Premier HP, but for the best groups I found that washing and lubricating the pellets works best for my gun. Groups go from half dollar size down to dime size at 15 yards by washing and lub.

I had no problems under 30 yards...It seems to be a 25 yard gun max for accuracy, but my Stroeger .177 at just 800 ft/s is accurate to 50 yards before you have to dope your scope...
