The question that needs to be answered is "Why was Van Jones allowed a White House security clearance with his radical alliances and Communist background?"

Van Jones has a prison record, is a self-avowed Communist, and is the founder and leader of the Communist revolutionary organization called Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement -- STORM.

Van Jones apparently never filled out the 7-page questionnaire including 63 questions that Obama said "every candidate for Cabinet and other high-ranking positions in the incoming administration" should submit.

Van Jones is the co-founder of ColorChange.com. The executive director of ColorChange.com is James Rucker who used to be the director of Grassroots Mobilization for the radical MoveOn.org.

Van Jones was a longtime member of the board of Apollo Alliance. Jeff Jones directs the New York Office of Apollo Alliance and helped to found the Weather Underground with Bill Ayers. It was the Weather Underground that took credit for the multiple bombings of U. S. government buildings including the U. S. Capitol (1971), the Pentagon (1972), and the State Department Building (1975).

With these kinds of terrorist associations, a prison record, and declaring himself an avowed Communist, how did Van Jones ever gain a White House security clearance that allows him access to very sensitive documents? A security clearance can also be used across agencies.



JERUSALEM – More than five months after the Obama administration announced the hiring of its "green jobs czar," Van Jones, the White House has refused to explain whether it knew of Jones admitted black nationalist and radical communist history and just who hired the adviser.

FREDERICK — During a two-week period in April four years ago, officials at the Army’s lead biodefense laboratory at Fort Detrick discovered anthrax spores had escaped carefully guarded suites into the building’s unprotected areas.
The breach called into question the ability of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases to keep its deadly agents within laboratory walls seven months after the terrorism attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and the anthrax mailings that autumn.

The 2002 incident was considered a containment breach because anthrax was found outside a containment suite, which is a group of laboratories and administrative rooms. USAMRIID uses strict security and sterilization methods to prevent the deadly agents stored inside from escaping.

Through a Freedom Of Information Act request, The Frederick News-Post obtained a 361-page report on the 2002 breach compiled by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, which oversees USAMRIID.

The News-Post also obtained reports of Detrick workers’ potential exposures to biological agents between April 1, 2002, and Dec. 1, 2005.

The News-Post used the USAMRMC report and the potential exposure documents to examine the changes USAMRIID has learned in the last four years, measuring its progress against Army recommendations and providing a rare look behind USAMRIID’s walls.


Finding the contamination
Concern about anthrax spores in supposedly clean areas began months before the April 2002 breach, during late 2001. That fall, anthrax-laced letters were mailed to Sens. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) and Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), as well as media outlets in New York and Florida.

In December 2001, a USAMRIID technician told Dr. Bruce Ivins, a microbiologist in USAMRIID’s Division of Bacteriology, that she was concerned she was exposed to anthrax spores when handling an anthrax-contaminated letter.

USAMRIID was in the midst of processing tens of thousands of items and environmental samples to rule out anthrax contamination, including the letters mailed to Sens. Daschle and Leahy.

Dr. Ivins, who still works in the bacteriology division but declined to comment for this story, tested the technician’s desk area that December and found growth that had the earmarks of anthrax.

He decontaminated her desk, computer, keypad and monitor, but didn’t notify his superiors.

In the USAMRMC report, Dr. Ivins told Army investigators he did the unauthorized testing because he was concerned the powder in the anthrax letters and other samples might not be adequately contained.

He again became suspicious of contamination April 8, 2002, when two researchers reported potential exposures to anthrax after noticing flasks they were working with had leaked anthrax, crusting the outside of the glass tubes.

USAMRIID officials found anthrax spores in several rooms within a conainment suite near the potential exposure.

Nasal swabs from one scientist involved in the incident tested positive. The scientist had been previously vaccinated and did not contract the disease.

When the contamination was discovered, Dr. Ivins performed an unauthorized sampling of areas outside containment April 15, according to the USAMRMC report.

He found anthrax spores in his office area; a passbox, which uses UV radiation to allow personnel to safely transfer materials from labs to outside areas such as hallways; and an area where scientists and technicians change from civilian clothing into laboratory garb.

Dr. Ivins found heavy growth of Ames-strain anthrax, a pathogenic or disease-causing form of the agent, on rubber molding surrounding the noncontainment side of a passbox.

His office area tested positive for Ames anthrax spores. The men’s change room tested positive for Ames spores and a few colonies of Vollum 1B, another pathogenic form.

The anthrax found in these areas was a different strain from that in the potential anthrax exposure April 8, suggesting at least two incidents of contamination. USAMRIID works with three anthrax strains: pathogenic strains Ames and Vollum 1B and Sterne, a nonpathogenic vaccine strain.


Confirmed
On April 16, 2002, Dr. Ivins notified the USAMRIID Bacteriology Division chief of the preliminary results from his April 15 sampling. USAMRIID confirmed the contamination April 16.

On April 18, official testing found anthrax spores in areas outside containment, including Dr. Ivins’ office and near a passbox.

A sample taken near the passbox tested positive for more than 200 spores of Ames-strain anthrax.

The testing also revealed spores in a men’s change room, posing a risk of contamination to the Jeanne Bussard center on South Market Street, where USAMRIID’s laundry is routinely processed after being sterilized at Fort Detrick.

The Army’s Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine found no anthrax contamination when it tested the center in the days after the breach.

USAMRIID sterilizes all laundry leaving change rooms, using high temperatures and pressure in machines called autoclaves.

USAMRIID Safety Officer Maj. Chris Ansell recently said all laundry has been autoclaved for years, before April 2002, and tests of the Jeanne Bussard center were an extra step in protecting its workers.


Where did the anthrax come from?
The USAMRMC report states that multiple episodes of anthrax contamination probably occurred in USAMRIID.

The most likely cause of the contamination found in April 2002, the report states, was an employee using old, ineffective bleach to decontaminate a container used to pass items through the passbox, and then placing the contaminated container on his desk.

The passbox contamination also may have occurred after researchers opened an anthrax-laced letter from the 2001 mailing attacks, the report states. The anthrax may have contaminated the outside of Ziploc bags used to transport material out of the passbox.

USAMRIID Commander Col. George Korch Jr., who was deputy commander during April 2002, said recently the institute still has not conclusively determined where the anthrax originated.

The spores could have existed in USAMRIID for years, biodefense expert Dr. C.J. Peters said earlier this year, as anthrax spores are extremely resistant.

Dr. Peters, the director for biodefense at the University of Texas Medical Branch Center for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases, served as USAMRIID’s deputy commander for several years until 2000.


Lax safety adherence
The USAMRMC report on the 2002 incident states — based on affidavits by scientists and officials — that USAMRIID had a comprehensive system of procedures in place that should prevent exposures if followed, but adherence to and enforcement of those procedures was lax.

The report was completed by investigating officer Col. David Hoover of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring.

Safety problems included researchers improperly using the passbox, improperly handling biohazard waste, lab clutter, unlabeled chemical bottles and poor housekeeping.

In one affidavit, USAMRIID’s biological safety officer and safety and occupational health manager said USAMRIID’s commander and division chiefs had been very responsive to any safety concerns he or she raised, but the responsiveness of laboratory supervisors to safety issues needed improvement.


Unconcerned about safety
An affidavit by USAMRIID’s safety and occupational health specialist also cited supervisory problems in handling safety violations — “a lack of teeth in the safety program,” he or she said.

“(Name redacted) has been very supportive, but there is not much interest from others in the headquarters in enforcing safety problems.”

The official, whose name was blacked out in the report, said he or she knew of some lab workers not showering, part of standard decontamination procedures.

In the report, the specialist states this example of some researchers having cavalier attitudes toward safety:

“For example, I went into a virology suite one day,” the specialist said. “He (no name specified) went through the hot change room stark naked carrying two library books and a bottle of Pepsi. I went in through the change room and found him sitting in the office drinking the Pepsi and wearing scrubs.

“I informed the individual that the Pepsi and the books from Frederick County Library should not have come in through the hot area but only through the passbox. Also, the library books would need to be autoclaved out of the suite.

“The researcher didn’t think these issues were important so I addressed it with (name redacted) and (he or she) addressed it with the supervisor.

“There was minimal support from the supervisor and division chief. In general, the virology division chief does not support safety concerns.”


‘Kind of sloppy’
In another affidavit, a research investigator in the bacteriology division, who served as a suite supervisor for about two years until mid-April 2002, questioned the efficacy of USAMRIID’s safety program.

The scientist said he or she routinely saw lab personnel not wearing latex gloves, standard laboratory protective equipment.

“Team anthrax are generally kind of sloppy,” the scientist states in the report. “I think there’s a serious problem. I recommend to my people to always wear one pair of gloves and to remove the outer pair of gloves after working with agent, since I can’t be sure the lab isn’t contaminated.

“There is institutional skepticism and a feeling that the safety program may be more about insulating the institute from criticism than from protecting the workers,” the scientist said. “Other workers have mentioned they might not report in the future because of the fallout from this episode.”


Discipline after report
Despite affidavits with finger-pointing at some individuals not following safety protocol, USAMRIID’s Col. Korch said no disciplinary action was taken against scientists named in the report.

“One thing you really want to avoid is, if you find a safety violation, you want to make sure there is an openness and acceptance about not being too punitive,” Col. Korch said. “You want to make people feel that they are openly contributing in a way that is not going to shut down (their) inclination to say ‘Hey, this happened.’”

USAMRIID spokeswoman Caree Vander Linden said that after the 2002 breach, the institute focused on learning from the incident and making necessary changes to prevent a similar occurrence.

After the breach, USAMRIID’s safety office began a weekly environmental surveillance of labs to catch agents in areas where they shouldn’t be. In the report, several scientists state surveillance cultures had once been routine but were rarely done by 2002.


Risk to Frederick
Dr. Peters said the 2002 breach revealed more about containment problems than a real danger to USAMRIID’s workers or the surrounding community, because while anthrax is deadly it isn’t contagious and the number of spores found was relatively small.

Of areas that tested positive for anthrax, nearly all had no more than three spores and one (near the passbox) had 200 spores, while a few thousand spores are necessary to infect the average person.

Anthrax is a disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, a bacterium that forms spores, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Anthrax can be contracted through spores in the digestive tract, on the skin or in the lungs. Inhalation anthrax — caused by breathing in spores — is more lethal than skin-contracted, or cutaneous, anthrax. The well-refined anthrax spores contained in the 2001 mailings traveled easily through air into victims’ noses and lungs.

The CDC classifies bioterrorism agents such as anthrax into categories. Anthrax is classified in Category A, agents that may spread across a large area and need a great deal of planning to protect the public’s health.

USAMRIID researchers who work with anthrax are vaccinated against the agent with the current licensed anthrax vaccine, known as Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed, or AVA.

No breaches of containment — the confirmed presence of agents where they shouldn’t be — have been reported before or after April 2002.

In USAMRIID’s 37-year history, researchers have reported five infections from biological agents they’ve worked with in the laboratories.

WASHINGTON — A top U.S. biodefense researcher apparently committed suicide just as the Justice Department was about to file criminal charges against him in the anthrax mailings that traumatized the nation in the weeks following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to a published report.
The scientist, Bruce E. Ivins, 62, who worked for the past 18 years at the government's biodefense labs at Fort Detrick, Md., had been told about the impending prosecution, the Los Angeles Times reported for Friday editions. The laboratory has been at the center of the FBI's investigation of the anthrax attacks, which killed five people.
Ivins died Tuesday at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Maryland. The Times, quoting an unidentified colleague, said the scientist had taken a massive dose of a prescription Tylenol mixed with codeine.
Tom Ivins, a brother of the scientist, told The Associated Press that another of his brothers, Charles, told him Bruce had committed suicide.
A woman who answered the phone at Charles Ivins' home in Etowah, N.C., refused to wake him and declined to comment on his death. "This is a grieving time," she said.

Under the federally supported National Animal Identification System (NAIS), digital tags are expected to be affixed to the U.S.'s 40 million farm animals to enable regulators to track and respond quickly to disease, bioterrorism, and other calamities. Opponents have many fears about this plan, among them that it could be the forerunner of a similar system for humans. The theory, circulated in blogs, goes like this: You test it on the animals first, demonstrating the viability of the radio frequency identification devices (RFIDs) to monitor each and every animal's movements and health history from birth to death, and then move on to people.

Well, all you conspiracy buffs, let me introduce you to Kevin McGrath and Scott Silverman.

McGrath heads a small, growing company that makes RFID chips for animals…and people.

Silverman heads a second company that sells the rice-size people chips, which are the only ones with Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approval, for implantation in an individual's right biceps. They carry an identity marker that would be linked to medical records. His goal is to create "the first RFID company for people."
Human-Chip Company Plans IPO

While the NAIS remains voluntary on a federal level, and there is no formal people identification system as yet, both executives are moving aggressively to position their companies for the day when chips in animals and people are the norm rather than the exception. Mary Zanoni, a lawyer and critic of NAIS who has written extensively about the system, says that "the microchipping of livestock and pet animals is intended to make tagging more acceptable in helping these companies market their devices for people."

McGrath's company, Digital Angel (DOC), does nearly $60 million in annual sales and has sold several million chips for attachment to livestock, mostly in the U.S. and Canada.

Silverman's company, VeriChip Corp., is preparing for widespread marketing of its people chips with an initial public offering that it expects to complete within the next 60 days. It has begun building what he refers to as "the infrastructure" by signing up more than 400 hospitals to adopt system scanners and databases and about 1,200 physicians to make chips available to patients likeliest to benefit from them, such as diabetics.

While McGrath and Silverman aren't related, their companies are. Digital Angel and VeriChip have the same majority owner. Applied Digital Solutions (ADSX), the parent of seven smaller companies, owns 55% of Digital Angel and all of VeriChip.

November 16, 2001: Dr. Don Wiley, 57, disappears during a business trip to Memphis, Tennessee. He had just bought tickets to take his son to Graceland the following day. Police found his rental car on a bridge outside Memphis. His body was later found in the Mississippi River. Wiley was one of the world´s leading researchers of deadly viruses, including HIV and the Ebola virus. He was an expert on the immune system´s response to viral attacks.

November 21, 2001: World-class microbiologist and high-profile Russian defector Dr. Vladimir Pasechnik, 64, dies of a stroke. November 24, 2001: Three more dead microbiologists: A Swissair flight from Berlin to Zurich crashes during its landing approach; 22 are killed and nine survive. Among those killed are Dr. Yaakov Matzner, 54, dean of the Hebrew University school of medicine; Amiramp Eldor, 59, head of the haematology department at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv and a world-recognized expert in blood clotting; and Avishai Berkman, 50, director of the Tel Aviv public
health department and businessman.

December 10, 2001: Dead microbiologist: "Dr. Robert Schwartz, 57, was stabbed and slashed with what police believe was a sword in his farmhouse in Leesberg, Va. His daughter, who identifies herself as a pagan high priestess, and three of her fellow pagans have been charged." [Globe and Mail, 5/4/02] All were part of what they called
a coven, and interested in magic, fantasy and self-mutilation. The police have no motive as to why they would have wanted to kill Schwartz, who was a single parent and said to be very close to his children. Schwartz worked at Virginia´s Center for Innovative Technology on DNA sequencing and pathogenic microorganisms.

December 14, 2001: Dead microbiologist: Nguyen Van Set, 44, dies in an airlock filled with nitrogen in his lab in Geelong, Australia.
The lab had just been written up in the journal Nature for its work in genetic manipulation and DNA sequencing. Scientists there had created a virulent form of mousepox. "They realized that if similar genetic manipulation was carried out on smallpox, an unstoppable killer could be unleashed,"

January 2002: Two dead microbiologists: Ivan Glebov and Alexi Brushlinski. Glebov died as the result of a bandit attack and Brushlinski was killed in Moscow. Both were well known around the world and members of the Russian Academy of Science.

February 9, 2002: Dead microbiologist: Victor Korshunov, 56, is bashed over the head and killed at the entrance of his home in Moscow, Russia. He was the head of the microbiology sub-faculty at the Russian State Medical University and an expert in intestinal bacteria.

February 11, 2002: Dead microbiologist: Dr. Ian Langford, 40, is found dead, partially naked and wedged under a chair in his home in Norwich, England. When found, his house was described as "blood-spattered and apparently ransacked." He was one of Europe´s leading experts on environmental risk.

February 28, 2002: Two dead microbiologists in San Francisco: While taking delivery of a pizza, Tanya Holzmayer, 46, is shot and killed by a colleague, Guyang Huang, 38, who then apparently shot himself.
Holzmayer moved to the US from Russia in 1989. Her research focused on the part of the human molecular structure that could be affected best by medicine. Holzmayer was focusing on helping create new drugs that interfere with replication of the virus that causes AIDS. One year earlier, Holzmayer obeyed senior management orders to fire Huang.

March 24, 2002: Dead microbiologist: David Wynn-Williams, 55, is hit by a car while jogging near his home in Cambridge, England. He was an astrobiologist with the Antarctic Astrobiology Project and the NASA Ames Research Center. He was studying the capability of microbes to adapt to environmental extremes, including the bombardment of ultraviolet rays and global warming.

March 25, 2002: Dead microbiologist: Steven Mostow, 63, dies when the airplane he was piloting crashes near Denver, Colorado. He worked at the Colorado Health Sciences Centre and was known as "Dr. Flu" for his expertise in treating influenza, and expertise on bioterrorism. Mostow was one of the country´s leading infectious disease experts.

November 12 2002: Dr. Benito Que, 52, was "an expert in infectious diseases and cellular biology at the Miami Medical School. Police originally suspected that he had been beaten on in a carjacking in the medical school´s parking lot. Strangely enough, though, his body
showed no signs of a beating.

June 24, 2003: Dr. Leland Rickman, a UC San Diego expert on
infectious diseases and, since Sept. 11, 2001 a consultant on bioterrorism. He was 47. Rickman died while on a teaching assignment in Lesotho, a small country bordered on all sides by South Africa. He had complained of a headache, but the cause of death was not immediately known. The physician had been working in Lesotho with

He was married with a 14-year-old son and a 20-year-old daughter, and was the chief scientist for chemical and biological defence at the Ministry of Defence´s laboratory at Porton Down, Wiltshire. The crash site was examined by officials from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch and the wreckage of the aircraft was removed from the site to the AAIB base at Farnborough.

July 21, 2004: Dr Bassem al-Mudares´ mutilated body was found in the city of Samarra, Iraq*. He was a phD chemist and had been tortured before being killed.

“As two talented biochemistry students and close friends, Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez had come to London to develop their skills as specialists in infectious disease and environmental engineering.


Instead the two became the victims of an attack that, even by the standards of a city battling against the blight of knife crime, is among the most horrific in living memory.


The bodies of Mr Bonomo and Mr Ferez, both 23, were found late on Sunday evening, bound, gagged and with hundreds of stab wounds and other injuries. They had been tortured and beaten repeatedly with a blunt instrument.


Yesterday officers described the killings, which took place in Mr Bonomo’s flat in southeast London, as the most vicious they had seen.


Mr Bonomo, a student in the proteins that cause infectious disease, had been stabbed 196 times, with up to half the wounds inflicted after he was dead. Mr Ferez, who hoped to become an expert in ecofriendly fuels, had 47 separate injuries.”


Most interesting about these reports, however, is not just the brutal murder of Mr Bonomo, but the area of study he was embarked upon at London’s Imperial Collage, one of the World’s premier institutions investigating the deadly H5N1 Avian Flu Virus, and which is being reported to be the claim made by the Indonesian Government that this deadly virus has been ‘engineered’ by the United States...

Indonesian Health Minister Siti Fadillah Supari has joined an ever growing list of government officials calling for the ‘immediate’ closure of the United States Naval Medical Research Unit 2 (NAMRU-2) located in their Nation, and has stated:

“This laboratory has been in Indonesia without a permit for over 40 years for research of diseases. Various types of viruses from Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Indonesia had been studied in this laboratory," she said.

"The families of two French students murdered by a psychopath who should have been behind bars intend to sue Britain's 'massively negligent' authorities for failing to protect their sons.

While yesterday's guilty verdicts and life sentences for Sonnex and Farmer will offer some small comfort to the victims' families, they must also spend the rest of their own lives in the knowledge that the murders should never have happened.

That they did is the most damning indictment imaginable of a criminal justice system which, from top to bottom, failed Mr Bonomo and Mr Ferez in every conceivable way - allowing Sonnex to walk the streets, when he should, without any question, have been behind bars.

He had a history of convictions for violence. At one stage had warned a prison doctor he feared he 'could kill'.

The authorities also missed at least two opportunities to put him in jail in the weeks prior to the murders - once when he tied up and threatened a pregnant woman and her boyfriend, and again when he was arrested for handling stolen goods.

Yet in spite of his danger to the public, the failings of the system conspired to leave the career criminal on the streets to launch his deadly attack.

The catalogue of blunders which culminated in the killing of the two science postgraduates on June 29 last year began while Sonnex, now 23, was in jail on an eight-year sentence for a stabbing and four gun and knifepoint robberies committed in 2002.

In May 2004, while in Portland Young Offender's Institute, a prison doctor interviewed him because he was seen as 'troubled young man behaving very badly'.

The doctor reported that Sonnex had said he feared his 'reaction to events meant he could kill'.

But the information remained in file and was never shared with anyone. This would prove crucial as Sonnex was being prepared for release, and risk assessed for his danger to the public.

In part because this detail was unknown, and despite the high level of violence in his previous crimes - including his appalling track record in prison, where he had 40 separate adjudications against him for drugs, violence and setting fire to his cell - he was categorised as medium risk by the Probation Service.

As a result, he was placed on a Level 1 multi-agency public protection arrangement (MAPPA), the lowest available - and without a proper assessment meeting even taking place - when he was released from prison two-thirds of the way through his sentence on February 8, 2008.

Therefore, instead of being supervised by police and probation - as would have been the case with a 'high risk' rating - he was placed into the care of a single, newly qualified Lewisham probation officer named Susanne Blaine, who had only a few months experience.

It has been over 50 years since the discovery of the double-stranded nature of DNA, and over that half-century and more we have learned a lot about deoxyribonucleic acid, from the fact that it organizes into a double-stranded double helix all the way to having sequenced the entire DNA of humans and a range of other organisms. Now, according to a paper published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, a team in Japan has created the world's first DNA strand made from artificial bases.

As information storage systems go, DNA is not bad. Just four different bases (adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine) are all that's needed to code for 20 different amino acids, using three base codons (e.g. AUG). In fact, the four-base, triplet codon system has the potential to be able to store information for more than just 20 amino acids; there are 64 potential combinations, so several amino acids have multiple codons, along with three stop codons that tell the cellular machinery involved that the sequence is done.

Along the way, people have looked at DNA and thought that it ought to be possible to use DNA to store nonbiological data. Better still, it can pack that information into far smaller packages than is possible with solid state memory or even the densest hard drive platters. There have also been experiments that use DNA sequences to perform parallel processing, as we covered last year.

But we needn't be limited to the four complementary bases, and that's just what has been shown by a Japanese team, who have published details of their creation of an artificial DNA strand. All the components of their DNA product are nonnatural, yet they spontaneously form right-handed duplexes with the corresponding opposite base, and these bonds have very similar properties to those of natural DNA.

The hope is that this artificial DNA could have a range of applications in the real world, from the aforementioned DNA computing proposals, along with using DNA to store data, to using it in nanotech settings. CHEYENNE - Husband-and-wife wildlife veterinarians who were nationally prominent experts on chronic wasting disease and brucellosis were killed in a snowy-weather crash on U.S. 287 in northern Colorado, authorities confirmed Thursday.

Tom Thorne and Beth Williams, of Wyoming's rural Albany County, died when their pickup truck hit a jackknifed trailer Wednesday night, according to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and Colorado Highway Patrol.

Williams, 53, had taught at the University of Wyoming since 1982 and was also familiar with wildlife diseases. "She was probably the foremost chronic wasting disease expert in the country," Game and Fish spokesman Al Langston said.

Thorne, 63, was acting director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department for nine months in 2002 and 2003. He worked in the department for 35 years before retiring in 2003 and was a prominent researcher of chronic wasting disease in deer and elk, as well as of brucellosis in bison and elk.

Williams also extensively researched other wildlife diseases, including distemper in black-footed ferrets. Miller said he believes that she and Thorne were instrumental in saving the ferrets, thought to be extinct until 18 of them were found near Meeteetse, Wyo., in the early 1980s.

She earned several honors during her 22 years at the University of Wyoming, including the Wildlife Disease Association's Distinguished Service Award in 1996 and, in 1999, the Wyoming Game Warden Association's award for outstanding assistance to wildlife law enforcement.

Thorne was one of three finalists for Game and Fish director in 2003. Previously he was assistant chief and chief of the department's Services Division, and branch chief of the state's Wildlife Veterinary Research Services.

Over the years he was also vice president of the Wildlife Disease Association, chairman of the Advisory Council for the American Association of Wildlife Veterinarians, and chairman of the U.S. Health Association's Wildlife Diseases Committee.

He held a bachelor's degree in zoology and doctorate in veterinary medicine from Oklahoma State University.

Chronic wasting disease is similar to mad cow disease, causing brain wasting and eventually death. It emerged in Colorado and Wyoming more than 30 years ago and has been found in recent years as far away as Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Brucellosis is a bacterial disease that can cause cattle to abort their calves. It is common in elk and bison in northwest Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park. Brucellosis also has been detected in a handful of cattle herds in Wyoming over the past year, causing the state to lose its federal status as a brucellosis-free state.

It was a homicide.

A chemist found dead last week in a storage tank at a Totowa water treatment plant was killed, most likely by one of her co-workers, authorities said Monday.

Citing autopsy results, investigators said Geetha Angara drowned at the Passaic Valley Water Commission plant, where she had worked for 12 years, and said they are questioning its 85-member workforce in the search for suspects. They declined to give information about what specifically made them conclude the senior chemist's death was a homicide.

Already distraught over Angara's death, workers became more so with the revelation that someone among them may be to blame, personnel director James Gallagher said. From now on, he said, water testers and other employees will pair up as they make their rounds. Local and county law-enforcement officials plan to begin patrolling inside the plant as well.

"There are obviously concerns and we're going to deal with them by making changes, such as the partner system, to make employees feel safer," Gallagher said.

Angara, a 43-year-old mother of three, was last seen Feb. 8 at about 10 a.m. as she set out to test water quality. A plant manager reported her missing at 11:22 that night after colleagues noticed her car in the lot hours after her shift had ended. Police divers found her body in a drained below-ground tank the following evening. The tank is accessible only through a 4-foot-wide opening, which was covered by a heavy aluminum panel.

Authorities refused to say what sort of struggle may have preceded Angara's fall into 30 feet of near-freezing water. Early on, investigators had said her body showed no obvious signs of trauma. On Monday, they declined to say what additional information the autopsy had revealed.

Family members declined to comment on the homicide announcement, but they said last week that Angara had no known enemies or other work-related problems. The native of India had a doctorate from New York University and lived with her husband and three children in Holmdel. Funeral services were held over the weekend.

Passaic County Prosecutor James F. Avigliano said it was "very doubtful" that someone outside the plant could have slipped in and killed Angara. He left open that possibility, however.

"The only way someone could wander in is if they came from the area of the Passaic River or climbed over a 10-foot fence," Avigliano said.

The Passaic County Sheriff's Department and Totowa police plan to begin patrolling the plant grounds by car and foot for an indefinite period, authorities said. Until now, officers only drove around the plant's perimeter.

The company has no surveillance cameras in the building where Angara was working. A homeland security plan calls for installing cameras on the grounds and in some buildings, but that probably would not include water-testing areas, officials said.

As senior chemist, Angara was in charge of calibrating sensors that measure water clarity. Those monitors line a concrete corridor where she was last seen working, and sit above the tank where she was found dead.

Searchers found her body in a sump at one end of the tank. Her two-way radio, clipboard and a broken flask were found below the tank opening about 100 feet away, Avigliano said.

Investigators initially focused on the diamond-plated aluminum covering that lay over the tank's opening. The plate measures 3.5 feet by 4.5 feet and weighs about 50 pounds, authorities say. At 5-feet, 5-inches tall and 175 pounds, Angara probably would have had trouble prying it loose and lifting it herself, investigators say.

Investigators began interviewing plant employees last week and plan to speak with all 85 who work there, authorities said. A company spokesman refused to say how many were working at the time of Angara's disappearance. All have reported for work as scheduled since then, Avigliano said.

The prosecutor has voiced frustration that borough police waited 10 hours to alert his office to Angara's disappearance and allowed a family member to drive the victim's car home. Totowa Police Chief Robert Coyle has said his officers initially had no reason to suspect homicide when a plant manager called to say a worker was missing.

Also hampering detectives' efforts were the 13 hours that elapsed from the time Angara was last seen alive to the missing-person call. "This is going to be a difficult case," Avigliano said. "I'm just hoping through diligent work ... we're able to conclude it."

To aid last week's search, officials drained millions of gallons of water from the 35-foot-deep tanks at the plant, which processes 75 million gallons of drinking water each day.

The water commission's 800,000 customers did not have their service interrupted and tests showed no signs of contamination.

As a precaution, however, the company advised customers to boil their drinking water on Wednesday and provided water from alternative sources while the search was conducted.

Investigators say the fatal explosion of a car parked at an Osceola County, Fla., Wal-Mart store was no accident, Local 6 News has learned.

The body of a 32-year-old man was found inside a burned car at a Kissimmee, Fla., Wal-Mart Wednesday night.

Witnesses said the man left the store at about 11 p.m. and entered his Ford Taurus car when it exploded.

However, investigators said they found a Duraflame log and propane canisters on the front passenger's seat.

Authorities said the man was having financial, marital and job problems.

Investigators found small canisters of propane, a container of gasoline and an artificial fireplace log in the passenger seat of the car, authorities said. They had reviewed a parking lot surveillance videotape and were preparing Thursday to look at a second tape. The store is near the Buenaventura Lakes subdivision.

Toler said Allison had a college degree in molecular biology and biotechnology. He was a fan of ice hockey and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also enjoyed playing video games with his stepsons and accompanying them to a skate park, Toler said.

He and his wife had been married nearly two years, public records show.
