The rise in GOES protons were from the far-side eruption beyond the west limb.

From the NOAA Forecast Discussion-

Energetic Particle

.24 hr Summary...

The greater than 10 MeV proton flux at geosynchronous orbit was enhanced
beginning around 14/0600 UTC associated with an event from beyond the
west limb. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit
remained at background levels.

looking at ACE
we have a huge rise in low energy protons
remember, these show us a incoming CME
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]
We also have a increase in Electrons, with a large off the chart spike about 2hrs ago, at around 01:00UTC
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

there is even a increase in the high energy protons, we dont see that often
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]
as you can see here on the 7 day chart, it usually stays pretty steady
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

we can see here a change and disturbance at around the 17:00 mark
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

i will head over to stereo and see what event happened around that time

I think our Magnetic Tether to basically the same region as the CH [link to iswa.ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov] is the definitely partly to blame.

yes is agree
here is the video i threw together, not my fav filter to view this in but you can still see what im talking about
this is zoomed into the southern coronal hole
you can see the collapsing of the eastern (left) side about half way through the video, as well as a lot of activity being seen within the CH

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28591282

i have ran through the rotation speed with a few others and come up with this new group directly earth facing in around 6 days, on Dec 21st
so, yes

solarham.com has a great farside map that shows the sunspots for each day
[link to www.solarham.net]
using this, we can see how much old sunspot 1620 has moved in rotation over the last 6 days
when you double that distance, to calculate its approx position in the next 6 days, you come up with it being dead center in a Earth facing position

but it's to soon just yet to know what this sunspot group will do. lets just keep an eye on this one and see if it does like many other do, and go quiet/stable while in a direct earth facing position
