Anyway ... kind of rare event, isn't it ? Yes, I think so. It's all new. We have only had a brief period in history...say 100 yrs with electricity, and look at WTF!!! we went and did..OOPS! Ben franklin fried his brains out with a key and a kite...And Then that wasn't goood eneough..the Carrington Event fried the Telegraph wires and burned the operators ..that wasn't good eneough! We found out that a solar event could wipe out the power grid like it did in Quebec in the 1980s so we went on a Nuclear Reactor building spree that would kill millions if another event like that ever happened again. We then decided to tie all banking, buisiness, infrastructure, government, education, and other fundamental societal structures and organizations together electronically with electricity! Remember that old frizzy Grey haired scientist on TV for those of you here in the states over 35? Remember what he taught you? Electrons will flow from the air into copper wire..remember?? and how??and why?? Nice post, Tom. Have you ever seen this photo of a fried transformer at the Salem nuclear plant? This was toasted by solar activity back in 1989. This is one of three nukes just down the freeway from me-one of which (Hope Creek) is a Fukushima-type Mark I. Interrsting reading for sure and again goes to show what a CME can do to our power grid. This same event would certainly be much more catastrophic considering the advancement in our technological infrastructure since 1989. There was no internet or GPS then, and our grid was not connected to them or satellites! Look here.. MARCH 1989 MAGNETIC STORM $10,000,000 transformer at Salem nuclear plant damaged beyond repair 6-week outage waiting for replacement Same storm blacked out Hydro-Quebec power grid -- 6,000,000 people without power for 9 hours. [link to neutronm.bartol.udel.edu] Because of the combined effects of Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere, high latitude sites have superior directional sensitivity, relative to low latitude sites. The cosmic rays are "in focus." Another reason to rely on a solid trustworthy site located at a far N lattitude around 55°N with a reliable database that can be researched for the last 15 yrs. You're not disrupting anything. We follow everything COSMIC. Please feel free to post any cosmos-related info or topics you wish- tell us more about cosmic rays. I know they're puzzling and mysterious. I wish we could access data from the Alpha-Magnetic-Spectrometer (AMS) which was installed on the ISS a few months back. Curiously, I never heard any mention of it since. I also wish someone had some updated data from the IBEX mission which may be tracking some of these sub-atomic particles coming from the interstellar boundary or heliopause. And it suggests that the attractive force of gravity is this difference between attractive and repulsive forces in magnetic fields. Since magnetic fields are created by electric fields, gravity must be an electrical effect. Anonymous Coward User ID: 5212000 United States 11/22/2011 05:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I just got a decent rundown from a science geeky friends about some stuff so I'm going to copy and paste it here. "stars are a balance between two forces, one trying to collapse the star to make it tiny, and one trying to explode the star apart stars start off as huge solar system sized clouds of hydrogen gas everything is attracted to everything else by gravity, so over time the gas gets pulled together into a big ball in the middle if there was nothing else at play, the ball would just get pulled tighter and tighter together forever, getting smaller and smaller, because gravity always pulls everything together, right" |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 5212000 United States 11/22/2011 05:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "well, i mean, the earth doesn't collapse into a tiny dot eventhough gravity wants it to. that's because there is another force which is preventing this collapse. that's electromagnetic forces between atoms and stuff, making materials solid. but stars are too heavy. the more matter you get together, the stronger gravity is, so stars have enough matter that the things which prevent planets from collapsing would not be enough to prevent stars from collapsing. but the way things in astronomy work is, gravity pulls them together, but when they reach a certain density, some other force pushing outwards away from the center and counteracts gravity just enough to give the things an actual size and shape" |
