Hey, NiN...just wanted to pop in quick to say welcome back (I know I'm a little late with that!) before you all get busy again. Thanks everyone for keeping us informed. I'm pretty sure I'm never going to understand all of this, but I'm really glad you guys do! AND...you explain it for people like me! Hope you're doing better.

i added to the blog the newer image that soho has not posted to their site yet
its a good sized CME

If this was a proton event, we would see this in the soho image by now?

edited to say: don't know if I posed that question correctly but I'm sure you know what I mean.

Is this the one? I think it was a couple of hours before the snow-effect kicked in. Heck, the snow just stopped fading out today.

STEREO Ahead has a new image. I think this one is too north directed to be a threat to Earth, but it's quite large so we may see some geo-effects. Too soon to tell. It's a real beauty!

My pleasure, J O G! I like the Earth-based GONG telescopes for watching filaments. Usually at least one of their scopes is updating every 1-5 minutes, so it's where I like to start to see what's going on. The space-based imagers are fantastic but take awhile to downlink the data.

And here's a color movie of the second wave at 01:35 to 01:48.

thanks for adding those Hugh
im running through data, see no signs of a proton storm
the CME looks to be a bit to far Northwest to be geoeffective
but looking at some recent images, i might retract that in the morning
a bit to hard to tell just yet
we just might get a glancing blow
ill update in the morning as to what i find
its almost 3am here and im still getting over the flu
so im off for the night

Some beautiful images of the magnetic loops all lit up from that third wave of flaring. I think this is causing the LDE shape to the X-ray flux. Those are damn big loops! They may re-fire again too.

Hi, gogo! That scope is not online right now, only the one(s) with the green numbers are active. I think that last shot was taken as the sun went out of view or the dome was in the way. The GONG scopes are scattered around the globe so we can have 24-hour coverage of the sun, weather permitting.

Re: SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)
I have a question:

This is primarily directed to the lifer's/moderators here...
Hugh, Nin, Look'n, IWTB, etc.

What here would be considered a post of excess length?

The LDE thing has come to fascinate me so much that I downloaded the archive of X-ray plots from NOAA and have prepared two listings: One list all X-class events through the period and notes all LDE's evidently of duration greater than 9+ hrs. The second list is thematically identical to the first but includes the M-class of flares as well. The motivation for this exercise in monomania comes from having assembled the plots into a slideshow and having it as a background on the desktop running over and over. After having watched this more times than I'd care to count I'd swear that there's a pattern present relative to the onset and duration of just the category of LDE's themselves, it keeps prodding at my subconscious mind though I can't quite put my finger on it yet. Perhaps those here might stumble over what I can't quite arrive at...several dozen heads are exponentially better than one I'm sure.

To be sure, if this has already been posted here in compact form previously or exists elsewhere on the web I'd dismiss the notion of a posting out of hand, also if this wouldn't be of significant interest to those hereabouts. The first list is relatively compact at less than 200 lines (about)...the second is much longer obviously.

OOPS,

Accidentally bumped the mouse while compiling the post above, "I have a question..." unknowingly got logged off of GLP and when resumed was an "anonymous coward". Incidentally, the list mentioned above extends from mid 96 to date.
