Viewers will see Venus as a small dot gliding slowly across our nearest star. Historically, viewed by luminaries like Captain James Cook and even Benjamin Franklin, this rare alignment is how we measured the size of our solar system. There have been 53 transits since 2000 B.C. The last time the event occurred was on June 8, 2004, watched by millions worldwide. This year, observers on all seven continents will be in position to see it. NASA TV coverage will include updates from NASA centers across the country and locations from some of the 148 countries hosting viewing activities. Images taken of the transit from the International Space Station and NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and Solar Dynamics Observatory also will be aired with scientists sharing their perspectives and the historical significance of the event. NASA EDGE, a behind-the-scenes, informative webcast, will air the transit live from Mauna Kea, Hawaii. This location offers the best viewing position of the entire transit. -from NASA Press Release- [link to www.nasa.gov] NASA's Transit of Venus webpage: [link to venustransit.nasa.gov] This will be an exiting event, to be sure, but I have one question. How come NASA said the Moon was too bright to use the Hubble Space telescope to get us hi-res images and now it's OK to point it at the SUN? Wow! Apparently this is how, 'Hubble cannot look at the sun directly, so astronomers are planning to point the telescope at the Earth's moon, using it as a mirror to capture reflected sunlight and isolate the small fraction of the light that passes through Venus's atmosphere. Imprinted on that small amount of light are the fingerprints of the planet’s atmospheric makeup'. [link to www.nasa.gov] Pretty impressive,if correct. Hi, Cesium, thanks for the info....very interesting. So I guess the Moon isn't too bright for the HST after all, LOL. June 5th should prove to be an fun-filled day for us suntards, eh? |

I hope the next one is bigger than AR 1476 AND AR 1429. Quoting: Solar Guardian Well, unless 1492 is still strengthening, it looks like return of 1476 is the next chance of a large sunspot region. It's the giant blob on the far-side GONG models. But the BIG FLARE of 2003 (I tink) was produced by a huge sunspot which wasn't even visible until almost mid-disk. Things are known to change without notice. Such is the enigma of our Sun....which is why we stay vigilant. GONG Far-side model: [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] |

Spittin'Cesium User ID: 14589973 Netherlands 05/26/2012 11:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Agreed Hugh : ) Check out this video of the Russian Micro-Satellite 'Chibis-m'. [link to www.youtube.com] It's mission is very interesting,I'll quote some of the information from the info-box below the video: '01/25/2012 :: January 25 at 03.18.30 GMT small spacecraft "Chibis-M" separated from the cargo vehicle (THC), "Progress M-13M" and began its autonomous flight. According to the ballistic Service Mission Control Center microsatellite was launched with the following parameters: • ; minimum height above the surface of the Earth - 497.535 km; • the maximum height above the surface of the Earth - 513.607 km• period - 94.55 minutes; • inclination - 51.62 degrees'. '"Chibis-M", intended to implement a new geophysical experiment aimed at a comprehensive study of physical processes in atmospheric lightning discharges. Microsatellite "Chibis-M" was created at the Institute of Space Research Institute in conjunction with other scientific organizations. Approximately one-third the mass of the satellite is a complex of scientific equipment (KPA), "The Storm". For the first time on a single satellite in a complex set of devices, "overlapping" range from gamma to radio waves, that the plan will allow researchers to "see" the largest possible number of processes that occur during lightning discharge. In the KPA "The Storm" includes x-ray detectors, gamma, ultraviolet and radio waves (30-50 MHz), generated by lightning discharge at an altitude of 13-20 km. In the KPA also includes tools for the study of plasma oscillations. In order to understand whether these are accompanied by flashes of lightning radiation, the KPA equipped with a digital camera. Detection of X-ray and gamma-radiation and ultraviolet radiation detector developed at the Research Institute of Nuclear Physics. DV Skobeltsyn MSU'. You should read the rest about the mission yourselves [link to www.youtube.com] It sounds pretty cool to me,suprised I had'nt heard of it. The video is also quite cool, apparently they used a 'Tug' to help launch the Satellite,if I understood correctly : ? The ACE electron detector is around one million miles closer to the Sun and the GOES electron detectors are in geosynchronus orbit around Earth and (usually) within the protection of the Magnetosphere. Basically ACE is recording the raw solar winds and GOES is recording what's leaking through the Earth's magnetic shield. However, it's bit unusual to see a spike like the ACE electrons from a C3 flare from a region still not facing us directly. This could be a harbinger of big things to come from region "whatever they're calling it". |
