MASSIVE PROMINENCE: Amateur astronomers around the world are monitoring a massive, active prominence dancing along the sun's southeastern limb. If you have a solar telescope, take a look. The latest images suggest an eruption might be in the offing. Stay tuned for action.

DARK HOLE IN THE SUN'S ATMOSPHERE: Ultraviolet telescopes onboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory are monitoring a vast dark hole--a "coronal hole"--in the sun's upper atmosphere. It has just turned directly toward Earth.
Coronal holes are places where the sun's magnetic field opens up and allows the solar wind to escape. A stream of solar wind flowing from this particular gap is en route to Earth, due to arrive on July 2nd or 3rd. The impact could spark geomagnetic storms and auroras.

SDO and STEREO down for me
the power grid is strained and failing on the east coast
Thread: 3.5 million are now without power...from Indiana to east coast!
if we have any major solar event right now, we could be in a bit of trouble
and the Canary Islands are about to erupt! EVACUATION underway NOW

Hi, '76, thanks for all your efforts. Yeah, I noticed that the image links go back to NASA. Just shows you how the weakest link in the chain (the power grids) can bring our whole civilization to a grinding halt. NOAA was almost evacuated earlier in the week due to wildfires. I also noted that the Naval Research Lab and SECCHI were also off-line. Until they the grids back up at least we still have the GONG Network.

maybe its just the heat getting to me
but how would a power outage anywhere make all these websites completly unassesable?

If the power is out, how will the internet work to distribute this data to the masses? Say I host a website from my house, if my power goes out, the website/server goes down to.

If you are paying attention, many NOAA products are down right now or having issues because NOAA HQ is in Maryland/DC right where the derecho went through.

A server can't run without power!
