This may have been the first CME I watched from when it was just a twinkle in the eye of a sunspot (1520) all the way until it reached the earth. Im new. It was cool to watch the flux rise on the 12th until it reached a X1.4 flare and then ultimately created this really impressive CME. It was fun to anticipate its arrival and speculate about what it might do to our tiny (relatively speaking) little planet as it blows over us. It was fun to watch the data as indications came in that it was coming closer and would soon be upon us. It was even a little scary as data was not updated for over 9 hours on NOAA and even NiN seamed a little rattled. The anticipation built even more as the CME was later than expected and my mind went through the possible reasons for this and what it would eventually mean when it finally hit. In a nutshell I have observed the magnetosphere doing its job and reacting appropriately to what I am realizing is fairly typical solar weather during this part of the cycle. It was a pretty impressive earth facing CME, especially considering the fact that the sun spots appear to turn off by some mysterious mechanism when they face the earth (I was starting to suspect a conspiracy...;))since I have been paying closer attention. I will still pay very close attention to major events as they occure. I beleive this thread is the best place on the planet to keep your finger on the pulse of space weather and people who are regulars on this thread spend a lot of time and energy to keep us informed and educated. Thanks to you for that. I have learned a ton. This shit can be addicting though and I spent so many hours staring at my screen during this event. I am not sure that it was worth it. With that said, I am going to spend more time outside checking out the weather first hand and staring into space with my eyeballs as opposed to through a satellite 1.5 million miles away. I think it is reasonable to fear the electromagnetic radiation coming from my computer and the effect it will have on me if I sit in front of it staring into its screen for hours and hours every day. For more, in fact than it is to fear the electromagnetic affects of a CME...our magnetosphere has our back...it has for a long long time. I watched it do its job and I feel that we are in good hands. I know we could have a Carrington event blah blah blah...that is why I will stay tuned. I just dont want to get sucked too far into this solar monitoring stuff because I have an addictive personality already and I could see me wasting too much time.
