I think the key is to be out in the middle of nowhere to catch all the fain ones. I'm 7-8 miles from a valley city that, I think, interferes. Nice predicition on SS43 88!!! The imager uses narrow-band interference filters, an image intensifier tube, and a cooled CCD camera to record the spatial distribution of various auroral and atmospheric emissions with very high sensitivity. It can detect optical emissions far below the visual threshold of the human eye. The 6300 angstrom red line (upper left) results from excitation of atomic oxygen at altitudes of 200-300 kilometers. The 5577 A green line (lower right) is an emission from atomic oxygen peaking at altitudes of ~110-150 km. Emissions from nitrogen produce blue light at about 100 km altitude (upper right). The lower left image is an unfiltered (white light) image'.
