Data from the SWPC Primary GOES X-ray satellite is shown. As of Feb 2008, no Secondary GOES X-ray satellite data is available. Some data dropouts will occur during satellite eclipses. ______________________________________ What is a satellite eclipse period? Since GOES is in a geosynchronous orbit, the sun will yearly traverse a +/- 23.5 degree angle perpendicular to the Earth's equator (GOES orbit plane). As a result, near the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes the Earth disk will periodically occult the sun, from a GOES perspective. Essentially, there are two eclipse seasons for each GOES spacecraft. Each eclipse season spans a 48-day period, symmetric around the equinox and the sun occultation lasts for a maximum of 72 minutes/day during the equinox. Each GOES spacecraft utilizes a solar array that converts sunlight into electricity in order to power the satellite. Each day during the eclipse season the sun is blocked by the Earth and sunlight is not available to the GOES solar array. Therefore, the energy needed to power the instruments is not available and the instruments are powered off. There is typically a 0-3 hour outage of imagery each day as GOES progresses through eclipse season. The maximum outage of 3 hours will occur at or near the equinox. Hugh M Eye User ID: 24287942 United States 12/21/2012 03:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | STELLAR DIVORCE-Zeta Ophiuchi plows through dust clouds-- The blue star near the center of this image is Zeta Ophiuchi. When seen in visible light it appears as a relatively dim red star surrounded by other dim stars and no dust. However, in this infrared image taken with NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, a completely different view emerges. Zeta Ophiuchi is actually a very massive, hot, bright blue star plowing its way through a large cloud of interstellar dust and gas. Astronomers theorize that this stellar juggernaut was likely once part of a binary star system with an even more massive partner. It's believed that when the partner exploded as a supernova, blasting away most of its mass, Zeta Ophiuchi was suddenly freed from its partner's pull and shot away like a bullet moving 24 kilometers per second (54,000 miles per hour). Zeta Ophiuchi is about 20 times more massive and 65,000 times more luminous than the sun. If it weren't surrounded by so much dust, it would be one of the brightest stars in the sky and appear blue to the eye. Like all stars with this kind of extreme mass and power, it subscribes to the 'live fast, die young' motto. It's already about halfway through its very short 8-million-year lifespan. In comparison, the sun is roughly halfway through its 10-billion-year lifespan. While the sun will eventually become a quiet white dwarf, Zeta Ophiuchi, like its ex-partner, will ultimately die in a massive explosion called a supernova. NiNzrez User ID: 28232082 United States 12/21/2012 05:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | if that was earth facing, that would be the talk of the day alllll over the net! this is a huge farside event that is ongoing i was watching for the event to end last night, because solar tsunamis are not seen to be this big and this long lasting. I thought it would be ended when i woke up but as of right now, it is ongoing. if that keeps going, and that wave does not stop, are we looking at a whole sun event? that the mayans said would happen, of all days... today we just have to wait and see :) I just loaded it in (Stereo B as you described) and at first didn't see much. But then I sped it up..1 click...2 click...3 clicks...etc and the faster I took it the more I saw what you are talking about. Finally it was fast enough that I could see the tsunami practically cover the entire left of the image, NiNz. It has gone all the way to the bottom of the image now. WOW That is some pretty wild (and scary) stuff. Hmmm ok, so now I am wondering what it actually means if any of that becomes earth facing. I mean, is the sun actually ejecting anything? How would it affect earth? not sure never seen a event of this sort this big so its hard to tell and of course im around today :) you should go take a look at the STEREO B movie now, with the updated images ^^ it just gets more and more impressive |
