joinca User ID: 23928361 United States 01/22/2013 10:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Taking a photo of the sun with a standard camera will provide a familiar image: a yellowish, featureless disk, perhaps colored a bit more red when near the horizon since the light must travel through more of Earth's atmosphere and consequently loses blue wavelengths before getting to the camera's lens. The sun, in fact, emits light in all colors, but since yellow is the brightest wavelength from the sun, that is the color we see with our naked eye -- which the camera represents, since one should never look directly at the sun. When all the visible colors are summed together, scientists call this "white light." snip: Each wavelength was chosen to highlight a particular part of the sun's atmosphere. From the sun's surface on out, the wavelengths SDO observes, measured in Angstroms, are: + 4500: Showing the sun's surface or photosphere. + 1700: Shows surface of the sun, as well as a layer of the sun's atmosphere called the chromosphere, which lies just above the photosphere and is where the temperature begins rising. + 1600: Shows a mixture between the upper photosphere and what's called the transition region, a region between the chromosphere and the upper most layer of the sun's atmosphere called the corona. The transition region is where the temperature rapidly rises. + 304: This light is emitted from the chromosphere and transition region. + 171: This wavelength shows the sun's atmosphere, or corona, when it's quiet. It also shows giant magnetic arcs known as coronal loops. + 193: Shows a slightly hotter region of the corona, and also the much hotter material of a solar flare. + 211: This wavelength shows hotter, magnetically active regions in the sun's corona. + 335: This wavelength also shows hotter, magnetically active regions in the corona. + 94: This highlights regions of the corona during a solar flare. + 131: The hottest material in a flare. Another ditty [link to www.sidc.oma.be] note the drop in Sunspot Numbers but yet strangely the CMEs' appear to be more or less keeping toe with the previous Years despite the Ss Lull. First link wouldn't load, second was awesome bit of info. Thanks, Spread the word, change the collective conscious...... Isis One User ID: 14343270 United States 01/23/2013 12:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No flare but a CME from that filament eruption. NOAA mentions it in their latest 'Discussion'- .24 hr Summary... Solar activity was very low during the past 24 hours. New Region 1661 (N13E60) was numbered this morning as it rotated into view. It is a simple Hsx-alpha region at this time. Region 1660 (N14W28) continued to show growth and is the most complex region on the disk as a Dac-type group with a beta-gamma magnetic configuration. A CME associated with an active filament eruption in the southeast quadrant of the disk was observed on NASA SDO AIA 304 starting around 22/0600 UTC. The event was also observed via NASA SOHO LASCO C2/C3 as well as both NASA STEREO A and B coronagraphs. Analysis indicates that the event has a fairly narrow limb event profile from Earths perspective with a significantly southward trajectory. The event is not believed to be a factor for forecast for the week. .Forecast... Solar activity is likely to be low with a slight chance for M-class flares from 23-25 Jan as Region 1660 continues to show development. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] The CME from the 21st had an evil face to it...but it seems only Eye can see it, LOL. Evil CME Face- :devilface-h1A: Hello Not sure what face it is you are seeing but I see what appears to be a Masked Face turned 3/5ths toward us - A bit like the plain Slipknot type mask. Can you outline your vision Hugh!? I tried but I can't draw on a track-pad too well, hehe. But I see Errol Flynn playing Lucifer, sort of.... :errol-flynn::cme-face: Excellent comparison, I take my head of steer comment back. I also get a little Phantom of the Opera....or this....
