I've literally been lurking on this thread for most of the last 8 hrs trying to learn as much as possible. I'm definitely feeling more educated than I was earlier. Much thanks to all of you, especially OP, for providing links and updates and commentary to this event. Being that this has been a nearly shill-free environment, I'd have to say the whole gang knows their shit and I have mad respect for all of you!

I'm still hungry for knowledge so can you tell me what the electrons going down could mean?

Thanks to all once again! Peace!!!

Hey, I just got back from 12-hr. shift in the sweatshop. Did I miss anything? LOL!

EARTH NARROWLY DODGES ANOTHER BULLET-This CME would have been a humdinger if it only happened a few days ago. It's always the quiet ones--AR1745 has only recorded one C1 flare in the past 4 days and then Blammo!

AR1745 region at a glance:

[link to www.solarmonitor.org]

Here's the Solarsoft close-up movies of the M5 eruption (just click on the image):

[link to sdowww.lmsal.com]

NOAA Solar Activity Summary for today-

.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity increased to high levels. Region 1745 (N13W80, Cao/beta)
produced a long-duration M5/3n flare at 22/1332 UTC (R2, Moderate)
associated with Types II and IV radio sweeps (estimated Type II speed
1237 km/s), and a 370 sfu Tenflare. A fast moving, partial-halo coronal
mass ejection (estimated speed 1488 km/s) was also associated with the
M5 flare with the bulk of the ejecta directed westward, though there
appeared to be a small Earthward component.
Region 1756 (S20E41,
Dai/beta-gamma) produced occasional C-class flares during the period as
it grew at a moderate pace and developed a beta-gamma magnetic
configuration. Region 1755 (N10E52, Dsi/beta-gamma) showed gradual spot
and penumbral growth in its trailer portion and developed a beta-gamma
magnetic configuration.

Solar Wind-

.24 hr Summary...
ACE data indicated possible CH HSS effects. Wind speed was elevated in
the 410 to 500 km/s range. Phi data indicated a Toward (-) solar sector
orientation during most of the period. IMF Bt was variable in the 1 to 7
nT range with a gradual upward trend after approximately 22/1830 UTC.
IMF Bz ranged from +/- 4 nT and was mostly southward after 22/1200 UTC.
Just after 22/2045 UTC, ACE/SWEPAM data became suspect due to likely
proton contamination from the earlier CME.

Geospace-
.Forecast...
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active
levels on 23 May, with a slight chance for minor storm levels, due to CH
HSS effects. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet to unsettled
levels for the first part of 24 May, with a slight chance for active
levels, as CH HSS effects diminish. Activity is expected to return to
unsettled to active levels midday on 24 May through 25 May, with a
slight chance for minor storm levels, due to an expected glancing blow
from todays partial halo CME.

For particulars regarding the S2 proton sorm and more go here:
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

I think "slight", "minor", and "glancing" are the key words here. Of course we'll be watching because NOAA has been wrong in the past, haha.

Say something Geo! What's going on?
 Quoting: UntiltheNextLife

No one really knows at the moment. A lot of things going on at once
 Quoting: Da fuq

yes we do
we have talked for the last 3 pages about it
there was a CME off the western limb that was associated with a M5 solar flare that induced a solar particle event
the rise in protons is the result
 Quoting: NiNzrez

Thank you for stating the obvious, it was in regards to the multiple instruments going down during the event.

[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

GOes is still down, and if you browse the SDO data half the western limb lights up.

I mean correct me if i'm wrong, do normal M class flares and the following CME's knock out GOES and a few others momentarily often?
 Quoting: Da fuq

I thought it was obvious, but you saying that no one really knew what was going on was incorrect.
maybe you replied to the wrong post, but these replies had nothing at all to do with any instruments going down.
they had to do with the proton flux rise
you stating that 'no one really knows' can scare a new reader or a now and then lurker of this thread into thinking that WE DO NOT KNOW wtf is going on, when in fact we do

as I have already posted earlier along with lots of info and links on the subject.. this event was not about any size of any flare. the flare size was not fudged, changed, hidden etc.

everything that is going on is because of the protons that were ejected from the sun with the CME
anything that had to do with the M flare is long over with. the satellite interruptions or any malfunctions of sensors onboard the satellites is/was caused by the solar radiation storm that has occurred

yes, instruments on satellites do go down often when there are larger particle proton events.
this has happened many times in the past when there has been a SEP event and in fact is quite expected when there is a SEP event
especially when there is a quick onset of the SEP event
this is even stated on the NOAA scales

we are in the middle of a S2 solar radiation storm at the moment
almost at the S3 level
here is the scale for S2 that has been posted today

Biological: passengers and crew in high-flying aircraft at high latitudes may be exposed to elevated radiation risk.***

Satellite operations: infrequent single-event upsets possible.

Other systems: small effects on HF propagation through the polar regions and navigation at polar cap locations possibly affected.

we are expecting coronal hole winds, might be from that

mass ejection (estimated speed 1488 km/s) was also associated with the
M5 flare with the bulk of the ejecta directed westward, though there
appeared to be a small Earthward component.

I think "slight", "minor", and "glancing" are the key words here. Of course we'll be watching because NOAA has been wrong in the past, haha.

Peace!!!

I've been lurking 8 hours a day for a year and still don't get it. Talk about solar density.

I agree Clovis. Have to just sit back in awe, listen and learn. Good people.

Remember to always ask questions. I am still learning and I wouldn't understand some things without asking for clarification! Sometimes you think you understand something only to find out you only understood part of it.

Going forward, I sure will ask questions. I had to establish a knowledge base before I even felt comfortable doing that. Thanks again!

we have a q&a section on the blog that is a great starting point for any solar observer
[link to mysolaralerts.blogspot.com]
after reading the info on the links provided, it is enough to give a good basis for solar knowledge and whats going on
for anything you don't understand, we all in this thread encourage everyone to ask questions
no such thing as a stupid question :)
if were not around it might take a minute to get a answer, but one of us regulars will always pop in and answer what we can

I've just accepted that this solar business is not my specialty and never will be.... So I lurk and try and decipher the foreign terminology that you folks communicate with and then I just gauge emotional reactions of your posts to ascertain the severity of the events. : )

I think we all have our individual specialties and primary areas of interest in life, and there isn't enough conscious energy nor time in the day to become well versed in everything you'd like to learn about. So that's why it's vital that people openly share their knowledge & findings from their primary fields of interest and this will serve to raise the level of awareness of the collective and all who are willing to listen.

For me, I'm primarily interested in Psychology, Sociology, Spirituality, Consciousness - things of that nature. That being said I'm very curious about space weather and how cosmic & solar events can impact the Earth and more importantly, influence human consciousness.
