This next example displays an issue that almost never arises but, when it does, there seems to be no end to the arguing.

Simplify 16 ÷ 2[8 – 3(4 – 2)] + 1.

16 ÷ 2[8 – 3(4 – 2)] + 1
= 16 ÷ 2[8 – 3(2)] + 1
= 16 ÷ 2[8 – 6] + 1
= 16 ÷ 2[2] + 1 (**)
= 16 ÷ 4 + 1
= 4 + 1
= 5

The confusing part in the above calculation is how "16 divided by 2[2] + 1" (in the line marked with the double-star) becomes "16 divided by 4 + 1", instead of "8 times by 2 + 1".

That's because, even though multiplication and division are at the same level (so the left-to-right rule should apply), parentheses outrank division, so the first 2 goes with the [2], rather than with the "16 divided by".

That is, multiplication that is indicated by placement against parentheses (or brackets, etc) is

Typesetting the entire problem in a graphing calculator verifies this hierarchy:

calculator screen-shot: 16 / 2(8) = 1, but 16 / 2 * 8 = 64

Note that different software will process this differently; even different models of Texas Instruments graphing calculators will process this differently.

In cases of ambiguity, be very careful of your parentheses, and make your meaning clear.

The general consensus among math people is that "multiplication by juxtaposition" (that is, multiplying by just putting things next to each other, rather than using the "×" sign) indicates that the juxtaposed values must be multiplied together before processing other operations.

But not all software is programmed this way, and sometimes teachers view things differently.

My "IQ" is technically "genius" level, although when I speak to posters like the one I've been engaging I wonder if it matters much.

People like him are never going to listen to people like me because their ego overrides their intellect, and this closes their minds. Right or wrong doesn't matter. Being right does. They're brainwashed by a fascist society to oppress the intelligentsia.

Tell mr this doesn't sound right....

WE KILLED OSAMA BIN LADEN , LET'S PARTY!(never mind he was an ally),

KILL SADDAM HUSEIN (he was worrying the jews in Israel)

KILL ADOLPH HITLER(he nationalized the currency and showed that world a successful economic system absent of jewish bankers)

KILL VIETNAMESE(threatened the oil reserves in nearby Thailand, the bankers assets)

KILL LOGIC(self explanatory if you've been following this thread),

KILL TRUTH (in case you hadn't noticed, you are knowingly excepting lies as the truth)

KILL ALL OF OUR ALLIES UNTIL ALL WE HAVE LEFT IS ENEMIES
(This describes our foreign policy ,and general attitude towards the world as Americans. We are the banksters attack dogs. That's why they dumbed down you poor cocksuckers here in the US and the NATO nations)

KILL THE BRIGHTEST OF THE GENTILES

They have effectively silenced me. But I have originated many ideas that these 'chosen ones' claimed as their own, and they have generally followed the policy of keeping 'rebelious and intelligent gentiles' down.

The pattern is to kill anything that gets in their way, including a proper functionality of the human brain.

THEY DEFINE THE TRUTH AS WHATEVER THEY DECIDE IT IS THAT PARTICULAR DAY TO FIT THE PARTICULAR CIRCUMSTANCE THEY'RE USING IT IN.They see you as a dumb herd of animals, to eb exploited like livestock. When they get ready, they will herd you to the stun gates and you will never even see it coming.

Have a nice day, you've all been had. This thread proves to me at least that a large segment of the population is not functioning on a fully conscious level. They're more or less in a trance state and will believe whatever they are told so long as they can be convinced it is a 'credible source'.

I remember back in 74 the NYS board of regents decided to let kids use calculators on tests,it was a big controversy at the time, I was in the 6th grade and I didn't have one. All I had was a slide rule which my father had taught me to use.

Calculators were the leading edge of technology then, they'd just came out. A simple one cost 200 bucks.

To make a long story short, when the math and science finals came up, 75% of the class had failing marks because the calculators of the day were defective and gave consistently incorrect answers.

Everyone that used calculators failed. Everyone. the whole state of new york had to have redo's of all regents examinations for courses involving math.

What I am trying to impress upon you is that you are relying on technology as an absolute infallibility, but it's only as infallible as the ones that designed it and programed it, and it is no more honest either.People who don't double check their work manually are claiming to know and answer when a machine produced it.

I already did this, but for you i will repeat it and show you how very important it is that you get 9 for an answer, less you might be beaten senseless or even worst!

here is the equation:

6/2(1+2)

Lets let 6 equal the number of ounces of hash the dealer has.

The one in parenthesis = his markup in hundreds of dollars per ounce, and the 2 is his cost from his supplier in hundreds of dollars.

Lets say you wanted to buy half of what the dealer had.

Dividing six ounces by two to get half gives 3 ounces.

now since the dealer is selling ounces for 300 dollars, and you bought three of them, you'd damn sure better not try to give him 1 hundred or 5 hundred, or any other number but 9 hundred.

You will receive a failing grade if you use manual methods, because the math was adjusted to fit the calculators.this is why there have been so many critically under-designed technological failures in recent years, and the cause was relying on technology instead of common sense and previously establsihed patterns

My point is that

6
------ = 1
2(1+2)

and

6 ÷ 2(1+2) = 9

It becomes an interpretation issue, that´s why so much confusion!

The presentation of OP: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
has only one answer: 9 according to PEMDAS

You may not interpret it as
6
------ = 1
2(1+2)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1362610

You are correct on all counts, my good Spaniard! Excelente!

As well, people are becoming confused about the operand 2(1+2) which are two seperate operations, not open to the Distributive properties of multi-variable algebra.

That is one of the beautiful things with mathematics. There can be only one answer. The answer for this problem, is 9.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1314600

this is incorrect. 2(1+2) must be multiplied out first to get rid of the () thus (2*1+2*2) =6 if it were written 6 divided by 2 times (1+2) then you would be correct in getting nine. the fact that the 2 is not seperated from the () by an operation symbol means that you must first solve
2(1+2) to get rid of the (). In truth this equation would have to be written as 6/2*(1+2);; 6 divided by 2 times (1+2) to get nine as the correct answer.
 Quoting: phedreus

That is incorrect. You do not distribute the "2" that is outside of the parenthesis, as this is not a multiple variable algebraic statement.
It is properly, mathematically, taken as
6 divided by 2, multiplied by the answer of, 2 plus 1
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1314600

2(1+3) is considered a term. this term must be simpified to remove the (). Since there is not an operation sign seperating the 2 from the (1+3) they must be considered as a whole and to get rid of the () you must multiply each number in the the () by the 2. I proved this quite simply be isolating the 2 terms of the equation.

Now BITE ME

And you don't show your work.
Does that work-out backwards too? If not, it is incorrect.
What is the question, (in words) that "=" answers in your version of the equation please?

3=half of what the dealer had 3 is the "solution" to your dopey problem.

You need to have a question, in words, to answer, and that is the answer that follows the equals sign.
