Both JNES and TEPCO now cite the containment cap gaskets as the cause of hydrogen to flow into the refueling floor. JNES also assumes 1000kg of hydrogen leaked into the first floor of unit 3. The JNES model shows concentrations of hydrogen in a lower level closest to the outer wall and also in an asymmetrical fashion on the refueling floor. JNES assumes the device hatch to be the leakage point. TEPCO found the large concrete plug for this hatch to have been dislodged. They also later found highly radioactive water leaking out of that hatch.

Corium Outflow:

JNES assumes at unit 1 corium (melted fuel) flowed out of the pedestal under the reactor vessel. Then the corium traveled out the pedestal across the drywell floor in a 130 degree fan. JNES shows this reaching the edge of the drywell floor. The smallish sump pits in the pedestal would have retained some of the corium causing larger holes to be burned in those locations that they do not think burned all the way through the containment basemat. They do not elaborate on where they think the corium went after it flowed out onto the drywell floor. Scope work by TEPCO did not find corium masses on the drywell floor at units 1 or 2. TEPCO cites in a recent document they are considering the idea that fuel fragments may be in the suppression chamber but JNES does not go far enough in their analysis to make this connection.

Thorium, Not The Nuclear Savior Claimed

The misinformation on thorium is highly promoted by the nuclear industry and various companies that want investment dollars for thorium reactors and fuel. This fairy tale being told about thorium is far from accurate and realistic. The problem becomes worse as uninformed people hear a brief propaganda piece on thorium and pass on that information without any research of their own.

One myth is that thorium is safe. Thorium-232 has a half life of 14 billion years (billions, not millions). Thorium-232 is also highly radiotoxic, with the same amount of radioactivity of uranium and thorium, thorium produces a far higher dose in the body. If someone inhaled an amount of thorium the bone surface dose is 200 times higher than if they inhaled the same amount of uranium. Thorium also requires longer spent fuel storage than uranium. With the daughter products of thorium like technetium-99 with a half life of over 200,000 years, thorium is not safe nor a solution to spent fuel storage issues.

Thorium is unable to produce energy on its own. Something thorium cheerleaders frequently fail to mention is that it needs a fissile material like uranium-235 or plutonium-239 to operate the reactor.

Maybe so... but it stands to reason that anyone with
means and an ounce of sense would have gotten out
of Japan if they could; at least until they knew it was safe.

Mountains of debris waiting to be disposed of

Less than 30 percent of debris generated by the 2011 tsunami disaster in the 3 hardest hit prefectures has been disposed.

The Environment Ministry estimates the total amount of debris and tsunami sediment to be disposed in the 3 prefectures is about 27.5 million tons. The ministry has set the end of March of next year as a target for completing disposal.

But as of the end of last November, the amount dealt with was only 24 percent in Iwate Prefecture, 31 percent in Miyagi and 12 percent in Fukushima.

TEPCO launches Fukushima reconstruction office

Tokyo Electric Power Company has launched a Fukushima recovery headquarters to oversee damage claims and decontamination efforts related to the nuclear accident in March of 2011.

An opening ceremony was held at the office in Fukushima Prefecture on Friday. The office head, TEPCO Executive Vice President Yoshiyuki Ishizaki, and about 80 employees attended.

Japanese researchers say they have succeeded in using iPS cell technology to make T cells, a white blood cell that plays a key role in fighting cancer.

The research raises hope that regenerated cells could potentially be used to treat cancer and AIDS.

Contaminated soil might have been illegally dumped in Fukushima

Some Japanese contractors are suspected of having illegally dumped radioactively contaminated soil, vegetation and water into rivers or other places close to the tsunami-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the Environment Ministry said Friday.

The ministry has decided to summon senior officials of those contractors to the Fukushima Office for Environmental Restoration and question them about how they have managed contaminated materials.

Currently, there are 2,507 fuel assemblies stored on site at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vernon in its five-story spent fuel pool, with another 884 fuel assemblies in 13 concrete and steel casks outside the reactor building.

Sorrell said Thursday that the NRC was “taking the very long term storage way too lightly, and the D.C. circuit (court) agreed with us.”

The NRC timeline is unacceptable.

In their filings, the 24 groups said a full review of the three issues outlined in June 2012 by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit – long-term storage risks for spent nuclear fuel, spent fuel pool fire risks, and spent fuel pool leakage risks – would take at least the seven years originally projected by the NRC staff, and likely considerably longer. Current federal law requires that the NRC conduct a comprehensive environmental impact statement (EIS) study before issuing a revised Waste Confidence Decision; the 24 groups submitted their comments about the appropriate “scoping” of the EIS.

In the absence of an adequate EIS review, the NRC has “no choice but to continue to suspend all licensing and re-licensing actions” for U.S. nuclear reactors, according to the 24 organizations. All licensing and re-licensing actions were previously suspended by the NRC until an EIS and revised Waste Confidence Decision have been issued.

The 24 groups jointly filing the comments today with the NRC are the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability, Beyond Nuclear, Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, Center for a Sustainable Coast, Citizens Allied for Safe Energy, Citizens Environmental Alliance, Don’t Waste Michigan, Ecology Party of Florida, Friends of the Earth, Georgia Women’s Action for New Directions, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Missouri Coalition for the Environment, New England Coalition, Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force, NC WARN, Nuclear Information and Resource Service, Nuclear Watch South, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Public Citizen, Riverkeeper, San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace, SEED Coalition, Sierra Club Nuclear Free Campaign, and Southern Alliance for Clean Energy.

No solution to tainted water at Fukushima plant

Nearly 2 years have passed since a massive earthquake and tsunami damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

But since then, no drastic solution has yet been found to manage the plant's growing amounts of contaminated water.

Each day about 400 tons of underground water has been flowing into reactor buildings since a nuclear accident triggered by the disaster on March 11th, 2011. The water becomes contaminated with radioactive materials.

The tainted water needs to be safely managed after being rid of radioactive substances.

But the volume of the water is continuing to rise, increasing radiation levels at the plant. If it leaks outside, it could contaminate the environment.

S. Korea restarts nuclear reactors after shutdown for inferior parts

SEOUL, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- South Korean officials said Wednesday they restarted a nuclear reactor shut down in the face of reports that inferior parts were used in at least two reactors.

Early last month, the Younggwang 5 and Younggwang 6 reactors were shut down due to the reports that thousands of inferior parts had been used under false warranties, Yonhap news agency reported in Seoul.
