Re: Comet Lovejoy survives perihelion!
I've been looking all over, and likely missed it, but.... When exactly is perihelion? Is it today, the 15th, at 7:00pm EST? I'm tired of looking and not finding the answer.

Thanks!

Whoops, of course I find it right after asking.

this is the prediction..

[...]Astronomer Gareth V. Williams computed a preliminary orbit for the comet, which indicates that perihelion (closest approach to the sun) will occur at 7 p.m. EST Dec. 15 (00:00 GMT on Dec. 16) at a distance of 548,000 miles (882,000 km) from the center of the sun, meaning that the comet will skim a mere 115,000 miles (186,000 km) above the solar surface, putting it into the special classification of a "Kreutz Sungrazer."

Wow I cant believe this is not pinned.
The Coma now appears half the size of the Sun on Soho.

That's from CCD blooming. It happens when pixel wells over-fill and flow into neighboring pixels on the same column.

Could someone please tell me when the best time to look for this Comet is?

I live in the EST time zone. Also which direction to look.

Thank you very much, really cool thread and I hope I have a chance to see this and have a few beers.

Thanks again folks

Would that explain these images too?

the pictures below are an enlargement of Comet Lovejoy from the 00:54 LASCO C3 image on the link above..

I thought it was sort of interesting due to all the right angles at the head of the Comet

LASCO C2 is about to start updating

SOHO should be coming into contact right around now. We have 2hr pass which should be enough time to get a few realtime images

Not unless it manages to survive perihelion, and even then, not right now. The only way you or I will see it for the next several hours is through the various sun-watching satellites.
