What’s melting so many glaciers in Antarctica? Searching for hidden volcanoes under the ice

Posted on April 7, 2012

April 7, 2012 – ANTARTICA - Mount Sidley, the highest volcano in Antarctica, may have a lot of company lurking out of sight. Scientists are using seismographs to hunt for hidden volcanoes in Antarctica. Scientists have used radar and other imaging technology to uncover some astounding finds under the East Antarctic Ice Sheet: A vast mountain range that rivals the Alps, and Lake Vostok, one of Earth’s largest lakes. Finally, seismographs can reveal hidden sources of seismic activity — little earthquakes that could be the signatures of active volcanoes hidden under the ice. “It’s really the first time we’re able to look at the interior structure of the mantle,” said Andrew Lloyd, a WSLU Ph.D. student who traveled hundreds of miles by snowmobile to help retrieve some of the seismographs — and the reams of data they recorded. “It will enable us to say something really definitive about the tectonics and geology of the region, which is something nobody has been able to do before,” Lloyd said. Wiens said that the data are already revealing a tantalizing picture of what is going on beneath West Antarctica, a place that is, in the words of one scientist, “hemorrhaging ice. We do see these big variations in the temperature in the mantle across parts of Antarctica that will have a big effect on the ice sheet,” Wiens said. However, he added, many months of work lie ahead, and it will be some time before scientists are ready to announce to the world what lies beneath the ice. –Live Science [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Tungnafellsjökull – Tectonic Earthquakes

Posted on April 7, 2012by volcanocafe

Photograph by our own Jamie. Tungnafellsjökull seen from Sprengisandur area. Notice that the Jökull is almost gone from Tungnafellsjökull, soon to become known as Tungnafjöll only.

There has been an earthquake swarm at the northern end of the Tungnafellsjökull during the evening and throughout the night. The swarm is still ongoing. There has been a lot of speculation out there in the blogosphere about it being volcanic in nature. It is not, it is purely tectonic.

As some of you know Iceland is divided by the Mid Atlantic Rift (MAR). The MAR in turn is divided in Iceland into two separate active seismic zones, the Eastern and the Western Icelandic Seismic Zone. Lately it has been the EISZ that has been most active of the two. But the WISZ is not in any way dead or dormant. Both of them are driven by the spreading of the MAR. From the WISZ the North American Plate is spread, and from the EISZ the Eurasian Plate is spread. In between them are two micro-plates that have formed by volcanism caused by the rifting.

The map is showing the Icelandic Volcanic Zones, where the MAR runs up into Iceland, where the MAR leaves Iceland and the more important volcanic features. The Icelandic Seismic Zones are corresponding to the volcanic zone.

Along both the WISZ and EISZ are lines of volcanoes spread, it is where the spreading causes magma to pour up and fill the spaces created by the spreading.

If you look at the map you see that WISZ runs from Hengill, up to Langjökull (2 known volcanoes), via Hofsjökull (at least one volcano), onwards through Tungnafellsjökull, and then ending up at the triple-junction at Bárdarbunga.

During the last few years the area of Tungnafellsjökull has been inactive, but there is ample evidence of it having been tectonically active, something that can be found in the Sprungur (tectonic faults) found in the area. The dormancy is likely due to the area having been locked at depth, probably by old magma that has solidified the area.

Lately the area has been subject to an uplift not seen in Iceland since de-glaciation after the last Ice age. This is due to the melting and diminishing of the glaciers of Tungnafellsjökull (almost gone) and Vatnajökull. This uplift process has accelerated during the last decade. It is now up to 3 cm year in the area according to Sigrún Hreinsdottir (source, private email). Yes, the famed inflation of Hamarinn is not happening, it is a combination of Grimsvötn motion and isostatic rebound.

This motion might have started to release the seismic lock at Tungnafellsjökull. If that is so, there is a risk that the swarm of earthquakes is just precursor quakes for a large earthquake.

What makes this interpretation the more likely one is that there is no discernible evidence of any harmonic tremoring during the earthquakes. This makes it into tectonic seismicity, not magmatic seismicity.

If there would be a large earthquake that tears the rift-lock, then magmatic movements could start in the area, but not before that. Worst case scenario here is not a volcanic eruption; it is a 6M earthquake as the slip-lock disintegrates over a large area.

Another thing that I want to point out, the earthquakes are all of low probability and some of them are as I write this due to change after revision, and some of them will be removed due to being false representations of earthquakes, so called Ghosts. And as I wrote this IMO has started to revision the earthquakes, right now there is at least one at 3M.

Translated.

,,Near 17.236 volunteers, technicians and professionals from Red Cross, Civil Defense and fire in Caldas, Tolima, Antioquia, Cundinamarca, Risaralda, Quindío and Valle del Cauca are ready to react to a possible eruption of volcano nevado del Ruiz, which is still warning Orange by its constant seismic movements. Thus reported it on the morning of this Holy Thursday the national unit for the management of the risk of disaster (UNGRD) which already installed 1.378 temporary accommodation in Caldas, Antioquia, Risaralda and Valle del Cauca to accommodate persons who are to be evacuated.

Similarly, are lists 32 purification plants of water and sanitary batteries and 1,800 packages with emergency humanitarian aid to assist possible victims. Likewise are willing 83 vehicles and 129 teams to perform actions of air rescue,,

I think this is an awakening of the volcano at Tungnafellsjokull. The area is really remote and also not far from Hamarinn to the south, Bardarbunga to its southeast or Askja to the northeast. There has been increasing activity at the hotspot center, which increases activity in all volcanic areas around. So, I would not be surprised to see an eruption in one of these areas in the next years.

Let us remember that eruptions in Iceland can start often without little or no earthquakes (example of last eruption of Grimsvotn, eruption at Westman Islands, eruptions of Hekla…). So, I take it serious this increase in activity to the north and northwest of Vatnajokull. We have seen for some ocasions last year, tremor at this area. Can even be the case that magma from Bardarbunga has now intruded into Tunganefellsjokull, just like it did to Grimsvotn and Hamarinn in last years.

Description
Alaska's Cleveland volcano in the Aleutian Islands is continuing to erupt. The Alaska Volcano Observatory said Friday that low-level eruptions continue to occur inside the volcano located on a remote, uninhabited island 940 miles southwest of Anchorage. The volcano's lava dome in the summit crater was destroyed during a short explosive eruption on Wednesday. The resulting ash cloud reached about 15,000 feet above sea level. It was the third lava dome that has been destroyed by explosive events since the eruptions began in July 2011.

what's worrying is katla hekla askja grimsvotn are all full to bursting, and now this long dormant Tungnafellsjokull is showing activity too. it seems to me the crust is taking up the slack of a fuckload of magma, and eventually we're gonna see a huge eruption at one of the sites

The earthquake swarm is ongoing. There is more to this then meets the eye in my opinion. I do wonder if this is a case of rapid development event that takes place just right before an eruption.

Then I am thinking of Chaitén type of development. What type of eruption might happen is impossible to know at this time.

There is also a good chance that this is just going to pass over and stop. With nothing more happening.

We are seeing an increase of activity in Vatnajokull, which is quite expected by Icelandic geologists. So, we might expect more unexpected eruptions around Vatnajokull in the next years and decades, with difficult names to pronounce for the foreign media.

This includes Bardarbunga, Hamarinn, Askja, Kverfjoll, Esjufjoll and Tunganfellsjokull. But the most likely are Askja and Hamarinn, together with more activity of Grimsvotn.

And this is a good web photo of the Laki lava field (or should I say only one of the 3 or 4 lava fields of Laki). Look at how wide it is, it goes far beyond the horizon…

And some photos (not mine) from Thjorsárhraun. Close to where I live there are wider areas of this lava field, I will go maybe there tomorrow and take a wide photo of it, from up a hill.

The main bulk of the earthquake activity during the night was tectonic, even those that are close to volcanoes (Kistufell and Kverkfjöll). It is the time for the seasonal ice load diminishing as the Vatnajökull start to melt. The quake swarm at Tungnafellsjökull (Tungnafjöll) rattled things loose.

The obvious exception are those two quakes over at Herdubreid. Those where magmatic as far as I can tell. And that would not be so odd really with an slowly activating volcano.

Something is starting to shake loose after all the pingpong quakes going around.
There was a small almost un-noticable harmonic tremor at SKR. It started at 19.15, slowly rose for 10 minutes, and then subsided for 5 minutes. It was not big.
[link to hraun.vedur.is]

But what is rather intriguing is the amount of action visible at VOT:
[link to hraun.vedur.is]

For reference DYN
[link to hraun.vedur.is] (Bárdarbunga) Should be largest if it was Bárdarbunga that was active.
And as a superduper reference JOK, which is covering the area south of Grimsvötn:

Anak Krakatau Volcano – Small Eruptions – 7th April 2012

Posted on April 8, 2012

On the morning of the 7th April 2012 Anak Krakatau started to produce small eruptions from the southern part of the crater. The eruption clouds only reached a height of 100-150meters and only contained small amounts of ash and only a little rockfall, the eruptions was not of a explosive character. The rest of the crater and its fumaroles are producing a continuous white cloud of steam/gas, rising to greater heights than the eruption clouds from the southern part of the crater. Additionally the southern/southwestern part of the outer part of the crater does now have fumaroles, indicating that magma is trapped under this part of the cone. -Youtube [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

If anyone is wonder, there was an earthquake of automatic magnitude 2.2M 7.1km south of Askja (Dreki) at 10.58 local time.
It shows well on four stations. ASK, MKO, KRE and VSH. It shows a bit on DYN. Most likely it will change to a 1.8 later. Most probable reason for it not being on the normal quake-map from IMO is that it was not located well depth-wise.
Just a head up for those who wondered what the spike is.

“Authorities declared a red alert in areas downstream the central Colombia Nevado del Ruiz volcano Sunday amid growing concerns an eruption is imminent.

According to Colombia’s meteorological institute IDEAM, the highest alert was justified “for the rivers close to the Nevado del Ruiz volcano because of a change in eruption threat and the heavy rains that have presented themselves in this area.”

Increased seismic activity forced local vulcanologists to maintain an orange alert for the past ten days which was heightened by the national authorities on Sunday after a further increase in measured activity.

According to IDEAM, the red alert is “preventive” and the volcano may decrease its seismic activity without coming to an eruption.

However, the red alert allows authorities to increase monitoring of the areas under threat of avalanches if the Nevado del Ruiz comes to erupt.

The city of Manizales, the capital of the Caldas department, falls under the area where the red alert was declared.

The most tragic eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz took place in 1985 when 25,000 were killed”

However, the red alert allows authorities to increase monitoring of the areas under threat of avalanches if the Nevado del Ruiz comes to erupt. The city of Manizales, the capital of the Caldas department, falls under the area where the red alert was declared.

Few earthquakes in Hamarinn volcano and Kverkfjöll volcano
Posted on April 8, 2012 by Jón Frímann
After several weeks of quiet period, activity in the volcanoes that are close to or in Vatnajökull glacier. During the past few days there have been earthquakes in several volcanoes in Vatnajökull volcano. Today it is the Hamarinn volcano and Kverkfjöll volcano.

Hamarinn volcano (Loki-Fögrufjöll)

Hamarinn volcano had its first eruption in July 2011. This eruption was small and started without even a hit of earthquake activity. It created a glacier flood that topped at 2100 M3. It did not create any damge. But it filled a human made lake that is used for power production in this area. That eruption was short, it only lasted for about 24 hours, maybe even less. Today this area of Hamarinn volcano has been having minor earthquake swarm. But this does not mean it is going to erupt again. But it also shows that current activity in Hamarinn volcano is not over.

The earthquakes seen on Skrokkalda SIL station. The earthquakes from Tungnafellsjökull volcano are also clear on this tremor plot from Iceland Meteorological Office. Copyright of this picture belongs to Iceland Meteorological Office.

Kverkfjöll volcano

Kverkfjöll volcano have been warning up to a eruption for some time now. When they might erupt is impossible to know at current time. But it is save to say that at present time, no eruption is going to take place any time soon. This however means that earthquakes are increasing in Kverkfjöll volcano. Most of the time there are just small earthquake swarms in Kverkfjöll volcano. No other changes have so far been noticed in Kverkfjöll volcano. But that is unlike what has been taking place in Askja volcano in the past few weeks.

The tremor plot from the SIL station that is closest to Kverkfjöll volcano. It just barely shows the earthquakes that have been taking place in Kverkfjöll volcano. Copyright of this picture belongs to Iceland Meteorological Office.

After several weeks of quiet in Iceland it seems to be that the quiet period is over. But if it is going to going to result in any major activity is impossible to know at this point.
