Re: World Volcano Activity UPDATE !!! MARAPI AGAIN!!! KATLA AGAIN!!! SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!!
India daily have commented that maybe a supervolcano is getting ready for erruption .

,,Toba in Sumatra experienced the massive volcano of VEI 8.0 – super volcano 74,000 years back. The deep Java trench marks the line where the Indo-Astralian plate subducts, i.e. slips under, the section of the Eurasian plate on which Indonesia sits. While sinking, the Indo-Australian plate heats up and its water content turns to superheated steam under enormous pressure. Prodigious energies are generated and the volcanoes on the fault line release a part of these energies. The speed of that push is 70 mm (2.75 in.) per year, adding up to more than 5 km (3.1 miles) in the 73,000 years since the last major Toba eruption.

According to computer models, somewhere near Toba, along the fault line there may be another super volcano getting ready for eruption. 3.1 mile sinking of Indo-Australian plate under the Euresian Plate in the last 74,000 years has created enough magma for a super volcano. ,,

Rincon de la Vieja had another episode of throwing out acidic mud from the acid-lake in the Active Crater (named like that), there was also phreatic explosive activity and steam ejected.

Although the water in the lake is nice and warm at the best of times, swiming in it would be like swiming in battery acid. Ie, one hork of a peeling.

And as usual, GVP has missed that it has been erupting since 2011. They are still stating 1998 as the last eruption… Sigh…

April 14, 2012

Active volcanoes in the world
13 volcanoes have shown changes in activity last week. New unusual activity has been noticed around 4 volcanoes.

CLEVELAND
Chuginadak Island 52.825°N, 169.944°W; summit elev. 1730 m
AVO reported that a small explosion from Cleveland was detected at 0112 on 4 April by distant seismic stations and infrasound arrays. Weather conditions prevented the detection of a possible eruption cloud in satellite images or by visual observation of the summit. Observations the next day revealed a thermal anomaly and that the 70-m-diameter lava dome had been destroyed by the explosion. This was the third lava dome that was erupted and subsequently destroyed by explosive events since the eruption began in July 2011.
On 6 April two short-duration explosions occurred at about 1635 and 2126. The resulting eruption clouds were ash poor and did not rise above 3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l. Elevated surface temperatures were observed using infrared satellite images near the times of the explosions. Satellite observations were obscured by clouds during 8-10 April. No seismic information was available because Cleveland does not have a real-time seismic network.

FUEGO
Guatemala 14.473°N, 90.880°W; summit elev. 3763 m
INSIVUMEH reported that during 9-10 April explosions from Fuego produced ash plumes that rose 100-900 m above the crater and drifted 10-15 km E and SE. Explosions produced shock waves detected within 8 km of the volcano. Avalanches descended the flanks.

NEVADO DEL RUIZ
Colombia 4.895°N, 75.322°W; summit elev. 5321 m
According to INGEOMINAS, the Observatorio Vulcanológico and Sismológico de Manizales reported that during 4-10 April seismicity at Nevado del Ruiz fluctuated but remained elevated. Sulfur dioxide emissions also remained high; occasionally a sulfur odor was reported in Manizales, about 25 km NW. On 5 April a volcano-tectonic earthquake, M 2.8, occurred below Arenas crater at a depth of 1 km, and was the highest magnitude earthquake recorded since February. During 4-6 April gas-and-steam plumes drifted NW. Gas-and-steam plumes rose 3 km above the crater on 7 April and 1.5 km above the crater on 10 April; the plumes drifted SE both days. The Alert Level remained at II (Orange; “eruption likely within days or weeks”).
* The video below gives a very good overview of how the authorities manage the current alert states of the volcano (Orange for the volcano and Yellow for the surrounding area). The video dates from April 11.
SOUFRIERE HILLS
Montserrat 16.72°N, 62.18°W; summit elev. 915 m
MVO reported that during 30 March-6 April activity at the Soufrière Hills lava dome was generally at a low level and no ash-venting episodes had been detected since 23 March. The average sulfur dioxide emission rate measured during the week was 529 tonnes per day with a minimum of 200 and a maximum of 1,033. Scientists aboard a helicopter overflight on 4 April observed a new vent which had formed on 23 March; it was 30-50 m across and on the W side of the crater floor. The Hazard Level remained at 2.

Ongoing activity was noted among the following volcanoes :
Karymsky, Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) – Kilauea, Hawaii (USA) – Pagan (Mariana Islands) – Puyehue-Cordón Caulle (Chile) – Ranakah, Flores Island (Indonesia) – Santa María (Guatemala) – Shiveluch, Central Kamchatka (Russia) – Tambora, Sumbawa Island (Indonesia) – Tungurahua (Ecuador )

Ok. Its now a month since ice started melting, two weeks since mostly gone. Guess water level still needes some vapourizing before intrusions can break thrugh. Last time around (1961) there was about ten days to two weeks from first reports of steam colums, to first fire columns. I expect it perhaps can show any day, give it five to ten days more?
Hope IMO has stocks of “stone tablets”. My own thinking, not expert.

Some more about Askja. There is now an interview with the geologist Benedikt G. Ófeigsson of IMO in the newspaper Morgunblaðið. He says that all goes well with the current research project at Askja (5 scientists involved: 2 from IMO, 2 from Univ. of Iceland, and 1 from British Univ. of Cambridge).

They were measuring the heat and conductivity of the water of lake Öskjuvatn and are continuing their research in the area. They intend to leave instruments for heat and conductivity measurements in the water till this summer.

At the moment, they are collecting all data from seismometers in the region, which have been installed by University of Cambridge and are not connected to the IMO network.

Additionnally, they had three movable GPS devices installed and intend to leave one of them behind, a device which will transfer data to them on a daily basis.

The sometimes mentioned Icelandic geologist (and oceanograph) Haraldur Sigurdsson, in his own blog, supposes that it would be a combined hydrothermal and weather phenomenon. It seems some places in the southwest corner of the lake often tend to be ice-free, and for the rest, the heavy winter storms of the area had removed the ice. [link to vulkan.blog.is] But then, where is the ice now?

Re. the Askja mystery: Some people over at Jón’s blog were indicating that different PH content of the water could actually act as an antifreeze. And that his might mean higher sulfur content as usual. [link to www.jonfr.com]

But how much higher would the sulfur content have to be in a lake 220 m deep and surface area of 11 km2? And would this mean just a little bit higher hydrothermal activity would be needed or a small underwater eruption?

Askja lake ice-free mystery deepens
Posted on April 15, 2012 by Jón Frímann
A short update on Askja volcano ice-free lake.

There have been news about the tour of geologist to Askja lake this week in the news. So far the result are puzzling. It turns out that Askja lake is just 1C, but that is normal for this time of year. So why it is ice-free remains a mystery at current time. Data from GPS and seismometers. Samples of the water has been taken also for a analyze and review of weather condition’s is under way. But so far the Askja lake mystery deepens.

News about Askja volcano and new video of Askja volcano. Use Google translate in the hope to understand what is sad.

And a sequel on the Askja mystery: Some nice theories to discuss perhaps.

As nobody actually knows what could be going on, on Haraldur Sigurdsson’s blog some people
have brought up different theories ( [link to vulkan.blog.is] Athugasemdir):

- Question: Are there really comparative data re. the water temperature at this time of year? (as the lake is in a really very remote area, which is only with difficulty accessible during winter time) And if so, are these data accessible to the public?

- Are there different layers (perhaps of different chemical substance / content) in the lake? And if so, could a strong wind through some holes mixted these layers up, so that surface temperature rose?

- One of the participants (Brynjólfur) remarked that it would need a bigger part of the lake without ice, so that the wind could build up waves in the water which could perhaps take the rest of the ice.

- Another one (Emil) mentions that the winter was rather warm in comparison (esp. Nov., Feb., March), so that the ice was perhaps very thin and could be broken by wind. Perhaps there is also heat convection involved. (But this should then always be that case, if not something has changed in the high temperature system under the lake – my musings).

- In the end, Haraldur Sigurdsson answers himself (not word to word translation by me): He is mentioning the exceptionnel (for Iceland) depth of the lake (226 m) and that therefore it would be difficult to measure the temperature at the bottom and take into account the high temperature system. He thinks that the ice normally would be rather thin because of the volcano under the lake. So that the wind can easily brake the ice, bring about a exchange of different water layers, and so take up warmer layers to the lake surface.

Two volcanoes in Costa Rica now reporting increased activity

Posted on April 16, 2012

April 16, 2012 – COSTA RICA – Thursday last the Turrialba sent experts scurrying to analyze the recent activity at the colossus southeast of San José. On Saturday, however, the Volcán Rincón de la Vieja, decided on a rumble of its own. It was around 2pm when residents heard the rumbles from the volcano located north of San José in the province of Guanacaste. Maria Martinez, volcanologist from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), explained that the phreatic eruption occurred at the lake and spewed water and sediment over the outer edge on the north side of the volcano. Authorities recommend not to approach the area and do not rule a new explosion. The entrance to the national park is closed. Both OVSICORI as the National Emergency Commission (CNE) will continue to closely monitor the volcano. –Inside Costa Rica [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Mexico’s sleeping Popocatépetl volcano awakens again

Posted on April 16, 2012

April 16, 2012 – MEXICO CITY – Popocatépetl, the nearly 18,000 foot volcano that hovers like a sentinel on the southeastern fringe of Mexico’s capital, awakened again Sunday, punctuating an especially shaky seismic season. Popo, as the mountain is widely called, spewed at least seven exhalations overnight Saturday and through the day Sunday, sending vapor, smoke and gas billowing into the clear sky. The most serious occurred just after 9 a.m. Sunday, sending a vapor cloud a mile into the air. Mexico’s National Disaster Prevention Center issued a precautionary warning to residents, advising them to stay alert for a worsening situation and to keep at least seven miles away from the volcano’s crater. The service predicted continuing “moderate exhalations, some with ash, sporadic low to moderate explosions with likely burning fragments emitted close to the crater, and flaming magma within the crater visible at night.”-Chron [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]
