Was the same for me but I moved to the other side of the country to buy a house I could afford. Prices went up a lot. Moved again to somewhere cheap and that gave me money and a house.

Save up money for a few years and buy a shack on a piece of land, just something you can OWN.

I am 32, I have: No house, no mortgage, old vehicle, my entire monetary worth including investments is less than 10k, a job, but no pension or benefits.

I admit I am worried but the way things are going I'm not so sure such things will really exist in 20 years for the majority of Canadians, much less Americans. If America fails it will only accelerate the demise of the Canadian system.

I notice a dramatic increase in general apathy among today's 18 year olds and it will only accelerate drastically with the next generational boom.

Civil war or most likely scattered lawlessness is likely in the cards. 40 year prospects seem extremely dim. I don't know if you believe in the story of John Titor but I am surprised at his accuracy, belated it may be.

Me too for the most part. I did everything they told me. Everything that was required of me like a good little boy citizen. I ended up with fuck all. I don't do anything they tell me anymore.

I just turned 50. 4 BR house on 4 acres with big shop building, 2006 GMC, 2010 Jeep, 99 F250, tractor, 4 wheeler, several 30's-50's cars, all paid for and I don't work. Best job I had in my life made 30k a year and worked there for 10 years. I bought and fixed up several houses moving up and making money each time to get to this spot in my life. Also bought, restored and sold many old cars to make money.

I'm in my 30s and I love having money. Knowing I can go home to a house is great until I decide to leave on holidays or for other reasons. Having a nice car is good and an alienware laptop rules. There's so much stuff to be had, I've lived in this caravan park but it's time to go home and it's great.

OP should buy stuff that's really good and will last him a while. Enjoying stuff is why people are forever buying stuff.

I have five kids and a wife. where i live i made up to $18/hr as a painter for 14 years. Company went down the toilet. I have a house and 3 vehicles and alot of shit accumulated over the years. Im about to loose evrything i worked for. I make 8.50 an hour now. Your not alone at all. But i can see the pain in my family and feel powerless. Damn i can barely keep us warm and fed.On the upside i found a cabin on 1 acre for 9,000. 2 bedroom 1 bath.I may have to do it. I wish i was free like you OP sometimes.

In my 20s and early 30s I always went after big money industrial jobs, hard shitty work for above average pay.

I had 3 interviews at a Cement plant,($28/hour) very competitive hundreds of applicants for 4 jobs. I did 3 interviews and made the final cut. On my last interview I walked out....told the panel that I don't like all the dust and that the air was not clean. 5 Jaws just dropped and they stared like I was crazy.

Believe me, your selfworth is not in the THINGS you own. Material things are just that, THINGS... You know, Many of Arabian families lives together even in old age.

This is how I look at it. We were born into this world with nothing and we will leave with nothing.

Somebody was right, there will be no pensions or social services in 10-20 years. The working poor are maxed out.

Best advice I can give to a 20 year old, get all your teeth pulled now and get dentures, because you'll never afford to get one tooth fixed down the line.

Well done! I'm trying to do the same, although not with cars, just houses. Most I've ever made is $33K/year as well. I hope to retire by 55, debt free, and live off rental income. Still got 15 years to go, though.
