If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787 |

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. 4. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation. 5. But interestingly she says that "We the People" includes the actual people: men, now women, now former slaves, etc. etc. She doesn't say it was or is just the landowners, or the "high contracting powers", or anything like that. Wonder if that's how she actually reads it? Was this interview done in her office? It has the nice American colonial furnishings, and the fringed US flag. |

Canada has a Charter of Rights and Freedoms' I guess the right-wingers don't actually read the Constitution any more than they read the Bible they profess to worship. The original Constitution: - Says blacks are worth three-fifths of whites - Says the importation of slaves is allowed at least for the next 20 years - Has not one word about individual rights: no freedom of speech or religion, no right to bear arms - Does not require any state to respect individual rights - Has a presidential election system more suited for the horse-and-carriage era. If we still had the same system, Obama would be president and John McCain (as the #2 vote-getter) would be vice-president. And those are just the major problems. You'd have to take a whole series of classes in Constitutional law to parse out all of them. Yes, most of the problems with the Constitution have been fixed with various amendments or Supreme Court decisions, but if you're starting fresh, why not fold those fixes into the Constitution itself rather than recreate the same problems? And it's not as if the other Constitutions are entirely alien documents. They were clearly inspired by the US Constitution. The first words of the Constitution of South Africa? "We the people." Wonder where they got that from. Last Edited by ToSeek on 02/04/2012 04:15 PM |
