JUNEAU — Scientists reported increased activity at one of Alaska's largest volcanoes on Friday, but geologist Chris Waythomas said it was unrelated to the earthquake that shook the Aleutian Islands that morning.

Waythomas said the increased seismicity at the Veniaminof Volcano, on the Alaska Peninsula, started before the magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck, and the two are too far apart.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory reported increased activity, including lava fountaining and ash emissions up to 20,000 feet, from the volcano on Friday morning. Waythomas, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey at the observatory, said scientists have been monitoring increased activity at the site since early June...

The strombolian activity at the Southest crater is ongoing for the third day in a row. The strombolian ejections are still fairly small reaching up to 40 meters above the crater. Loud explotions are still heard by local residents.
The activity at Bocca Nuova seems to have stopped after the crater floor collapse yesterday.

Seems like Etna has changed its behavioural pattern from the paroxysm-mode seen the last year into a new pattern. What that pattern will end up as will unfold in the days and weeks that follow. For the time being we can enjoy the show of Etna playing at being Stromboli.

One thing of note is that the strombolian activity at Etna continues even though harmonic tremor is very low. Except for a few events that might be LP earthquakes there has not been any measurable activity.

Mount Lokon in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, erupted again at 6:30 a.m. local time on Monday, spewing volcanic material from the Tompaluan Lokon crater up to 1,500 meters in the air. "The lava flow reached several northern area villages, namely Pineleng, Tanawangko and Tateli," said National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in Jakarta on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency. Sutopo said the explosion was heard as far away as Minahasa, which is 10 kilometers away from the volcano. Mt. Lokon has been erupting continuously for years, as such, for the local residents watching the volcano erupt is normal. Moreover, the volcanic materials have made the farming land in Tomohon fertile. The status of the volcanic activity remains at Siaga or "alert" (level 3), Sutopo explained. He said Mt. Lokon had erupted tens of times since the alert status was announced on July 24, 2011. "The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center [PVMBG] has warned local residents and visitors to stay outside and to not go within a 2.5-kilometer radius of the Tompaluan crater," said Sutopo. He added both BPBD Tomohon and North Sulawesi had developed and introduced contingency plans to mitigate the impacts of the eruption on local residents.
