Between 10 and 11:15 pm last night, a lava flow issued from the spatter cone on the southeast edge of the floor and advanced northward almost the full width of the crater before stalling and deflating; this is the second lava flow within the crater in the past week - both occurred during DI inflation suggesting the Pu`u `O`o magmatic system is full and possibly not able to feed enough lava through the tube system on the cone's east flank.

As you are all aware, over recent weeks there has been significant activity on the Atlantic Ridge to the North and South of Iceland, this has currently died down and the activity in the Vatnajökull area has increased. Askja lake was melting and level changing before there was any EQ’s of any note.

The mantle plume beneath Iceland appears to be centred somewhere between Vatnajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. Sil stations have been showing activity and dike intrusions for some time. What concerns me is the possibility that all this EQ activity in heretofore ‘quiet’ volcanoes is signifying an upward mantle plume push and the dike intrusions are a result of that pressure being pushed outward into all mantle chambers and corridors until there is nowhere else for it to go.

I hate being the pessimist, but using logic alone, I believe the next eruption, whenever and wherever it occurs, will be major. If my theory is right about the plume, then maybe we should be looking for the common central volcano for all the activity in Vatnajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, which would be somewhere around Laki – where there has been no EQ’s recently.

The hot plume pushing magma upwards and filling into dikes into the different volcanoes around Vatnajokull seems to make sense.

Maybe the hot plume is somewhere centered over the fissure zone west of Vatnajokull (but then we ignore that the thickest crust is right under Bardarbunga).

As far as we know, there is no central volcano under Laki. It is a side fissure from Grimsvotn, which is to the northeast.

Why do you suggest that the center of the plume should be under there?Actually most of the magma has been released not there but further north, under Veidivotn fissure. But I believe that magma eventually will find a way up in some volcano in Vatnajokull, and not only in one eruption or place, but probably in a few, as history of Iceland often shows us.

During the afternoon of the day today on April 7th, there was a column of gas with an approximate height of 3,000 meters, white towards the south-east of Arenas crater, associated mainly with water vapor and carbon dioxide (SO2). This is part of the current activity in which the volcano.

It should be noted that observed today, not for an eruptive event.

look at the visibility FROM the cam to the start of the glacier. MILES and miles. ON the glacier however, different story.

can clearly make out blue sky to top right too.

why is it so clear, miles and miles of clear vision all the way to the glacier, yet on the glacier, clouds springing UP from the glacier with clear blue sky above?

could just be atmospheric, I suppose, probably is, but anything weird I spot I'm highlighting. you never know when you might spot something important.

here we go again. something very odd on the glacier. been watching this cloud, or shadow develop on the glacier, and been waiting for it to change shape, as it should if it was a cloud or shadow, but it hasn't, it's steadily expanded. see what you think. first pic shows the glacier, third pic circles where to watch..

In the 24 hours monitoring system registried 7 exhalations, emission acompanies by water vapor and gas. Other monitoring parámetros remain approximately unchanged.
Limited visibility because clouds but visible glow from emission of vapour and gas at night.

Unexplained ice melting at the Askja Crater Lake in Iceland

Something interesting going on up in Iceland – a few news reports have been talking about the crater lake on Askja caldera loosing ice over the last month while other non-volcanic lakes around it and at lower elevations are still ice-covered. Normally, the lake isn’t ice-free until June or July. This increase in hydro-thermal activity seems to be located at the bottom of the lake. It could be that hot springs and fumaroles at the bottom of the lake are heating the water, causing the ice to melt.

It is very unlikely that meteorological factors are to blame for this effect, although it was unusually warm March. The other lakes in the highlands, for example Hágöngulón, are now ice-free. Apparently it seems that the strong, steady southwest winds in recent weeks and a light winter snow could be a factor. The question arises whether the geothermal heat is starting to simmer and are we facing an eruption of Askja....
