My friend Boris Behncke (INGV Catania) indicates that the paroxysm of yesterday April 20th started very suddenly, while the situation was still perfectly calm until 15 p.m., as opposed to April 19th when the SE Crater had experienced explosive activity until evening. Boris says that the lava fountains probably reached 1000 meters high but were often hidden by the curtain of ash and lapilli emitted by the volcano. At the time of climax, Boris was driving on the Messina-Catania motorway near Giarre. He had the good idea to start his camcorder. The video below lets you hear the sound of lapilli on the car and see the vehicles stopped along the road, especially under bridges. Friends who were also in their car in the area told me that the blocks reached 10 cm in diameter.

Capturing the newest rocks on EarthMy little daughter Ida was with me when I drove around Etna during its latest paroxysm on 20 April 2013, and after an initial moment of apprehension, she got quite interested in the whole thing. I stopped in many places to take photos and record video, and she would get off of the car, open her old little "Hello Kitty" umbrella and stretch out her hand to collect the falling little chunks of volcanic rock known as lapilli:

A new episode of lava fountaining (paroxysm) has taken place on the afternoon of 20 April 2013 at Etna's New Southeast Crater (NSEC), the 12th event of this type within two months. Explosive activity had resumed on 19 April, less than 24 hours after the end of the previous paroxysm. During the night of 19-20 April, the explosive activity switched to quiet, non-explosive emission of lava from the eruptive fissure at the southeastern base of the NSEC cone, which had opened a the end of the 12 April paroxysm but remained inactive during the subsequent paroxysm on 18 Apeil. During the day of 20 April, effusive activity continued, but explosive phenomena were virtually absent until about 15:00 GMT (=local time -2), when violent explosions started, which rapidly passed into a lava fountain accompanied by the formation of an eruption column. The lava fountains reached heights of 800-1000 m above the crater, whereas the cloud of pyroclastic material expanded toward east-southeast, leading to heavy falls of ash and lapilli over the areas of Zafferana Etnea, Milo, Santa Venerina and further downslope, in the area of Giarre. A well-fed lava flow expanded down the western slope of the Valle del Bove, locally interacting with residual patches of snow, which resulted in the formation of lahars and ground-hugging steam and ash clouds, a phenomenon seen several times during previous paroxysms during the winter season on Etna. Lava fountaining continued for about one hour, and then passed into sporadic explosions and ash emission between 16:15 and 16:25. The episode was essentially over by 16:40, although the lava flow is still showing movement and possibly is still being fed from its source vent (19:00 GMT on 20 April 2013).

Rumbling Chilean Volcanoes: Laguna del Maule, Lascar, Copahue, Antuco
...Now, over the last few months, seismicity has been on the upswing at Laguna del Maule, with multiple earthquake swarms within the top 10 km of the crust under Laguna del Maule. What is most interesting is the deformation that is being noticed across the area — in the central part of the lake, land is rising at 1.40 cm/month, while on the west side of the lake, the land is rising at 0.64 cm/month. Those might seem like small numbers, but for volcanic deformation, that is high enough to cause the SERNAGEOMIN raise the alert to Yellow (eruption possible in weeks to months) when combined with the increased seismicity. Predicting what kind of eruption would occur at Laguna del Maule is tricky as it is not known when the last eruption happened, but the most recent activity appears to be phreatic/phreatomagmatic explosion (driven mainly by water) and rhyolite domes and flows...
...Lascar is still pumping out significant sulfur dioxide — topping out at over 3000 tons/day with an average of 940 tons/day. All in all, lots of unrest but not a lot of eruptive activity so far at Lascar...
...John Seach relayed ...the news that a pilot supposedly saw a small ash plume from Antuco...Information from the VAAC (see comments) says that this report is likely due to a wildfire and not volcanic activity at Antuco.

A series of seismic events within the volcano El Ruiz shook towns near Bogota over the weekend, as cameras from the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) captured geysers of hot gas and ash. Constant seismic activity in the last three days has experts hyper vigilant. Nevado del Ruiz, a hulking 17,457 ft volcano straddling the border of the Caldas and Tolima departments, is the most observed volcano in the country. El Ruiz took the world stage in 1985 when a tragic eruption destroyed Armero, claiming an estimated 25,000 lives. The largest earthquake, of 4.0 magnitude with a depth of 4.6 miles, was reported by the SGC on Sunday morning. The seismic activity registered since April 13th through yesterday's earthquake has been "associated with fracturing of rock on the interior of the volcanic structure," according to the SGC website. El Ruiz is a stratovolcano, meaning that it is made of alternating layers of lava and hardened volcanic ash. The eruptions from El Ruiz can cause lahars, or flows of mud and debris. The eruption before the lahar which destroyed Armero was relatively small. El Ruiz has been active for an estimated two million years.

April 22, 2013 – INDONESIA - Contrary to earlier reports, no building collapsed due to the quake. But at least 311 houses were damaged. 34 of them with severe and 27 with moderate damage. Besides to the damage, 2 people were injured by the quake. A woman and her child suffered fractures and were taken to a nearby hospital. Evacuated people are gradually returning to their villages due to a decrease in volcanic activity of the Dieng volcano complex. At least 3 buildings in local villages collapsed due to the shaking. 9 additional buildings were affected with major damage. Nobody was injured. It is expected that this quake was tectonic nature, but with probably related to Deng volcano. 86 weaker earthquakes followed the main shock within 25 minutes. Cracks in walls and further damaged houses are the result of this Dieng earthquake which has also a volcanic basis. 1000 people have been evacuated to shelters provided by the Indonesian authorities. The earthquakes are part of the activity of the Dieng volcano. The alert level has been raised to Siaga on March 27. Over the last three episodes, the « preludes » gradually shortened. Besides, fifteen minutes elapsed between the first emission of ash and the lava fountains. This episode is also marked by the relative simplicity of the eruptive phase, with all the explosive activity focused on the NCSE and all the effusive activity focused on a vent at the SE base of the cone. Finally, we should note that, after the paroxysm of April 20th, 2013, the monitoring parameters did not return to a « normal » level, which shows more « active » volcano dynamics compared to the previous weeks"

...Our data show a decrease in growing-season surface water temperatures (10 °C) during the Eocene–Oligocene transition, corresponding to an average decrease in mean annual air temperature of 4–6 °C from the Late Eocene to Early Oligocene. The magnitude of cooling is similar to observed decreases in North Atlantic sea surface temperature over this interval and occurs during major glacial expansion. This suggests a close linkage between atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, Northern Hemisphere temperature, and expansion of the Antarctic ice sheets.

The monitoring system of Popocatepetl volcano registered an explosion, this early morning at 06:12 h (local time)accompanied by the emission of incandescent fragments and a steam and ash plume of 1.2 km high (see report below) and 25 exhalations of low to moderate intensity, accompanied by steam and gas emission. The cloudy conditions at the highest part of the volcano did not allow to observed if they were accompanied by ash emissions...
...At the momento of this report there is not visibility to the highest part of the volcano. However, in previous hours the steam and gas plume could be seen travelling to the southeast (see image 10).

Since yesterday, Mount Etna’s SE Crater has been emitting pulses of ash at regular intervals. The eruptive tremor and seismicity are still at relatively low levels but the situation may change rapidly. As Borris Behncke (INGV Catania) put it after the last paroxysm, the “preludes” are getting shorter and the volcano may erupt without warning.
