Chevy Volt=Epic Fail
Cost to operate a Chevy Volt

Eric Bolling (Fox Business Channel's Follow the Money) test drove the
Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors.
For four days in a row, the fully charged battery lasted only 25 miles
before the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine.
Eric calculated the car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran on
the battery. So, the range including the 9 gallon gas tank and the 16
kwh batery is approximately 270 miles. It will take you 4 1/2 hours to
drive 270 miles at 60 mph. Then add 10 hours to charge the battery and
you have a total trip time of 14.5 hours. In a typical road trip your
average speed (including charging time) would be 20 mph.

According to General Motors, the Volt battery holds 16 kwh of
electricity. It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained battery.
The cost for the electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned so
I looked up what I pay for electricity.

I pay approximately (it varies with amount used and the seasons) $1.16 per
kwh.

16 kwh x $1.16 per kwh = $18.56 to charge the battery.
$18.56 per charge divided by 25 miles = $0.74 per mile to operate the
Volt using the battery.
Compare this to a similar size car with a gasoline engine only that gets 32
mpg.
$3.19 per gallon divided by 32 mpg = $0.10 per mile.
The gasoline powered car cost about $15,000 while the Volt costs $46,000.
So the Government wants us to pay 3 times as much for a car that costs
more than 7 times as much to run and takes 3 times as long to drive
across country

You might want to double check what you pay for electricity. Sounds Really high, I pay about 10 cents per kwh (in Ontario Canada).

Maybe your price is $0.116

OR...

The total price to charge the Car is $1.16 (which would make more sense)

Snopes... on a long trip, refill the gas tank every 270 miles, not stop to charge for 10 hours.

And the price per KWH quoted is insanely high for the USA... at this time.

When doing the math on SNOPES there the Volt is .03 cents per mile less expensive than a 32 mpg car. Guess what, I'll buy the gas guzzler.

Even if his math is grossly flawed, 30 MPG is really piss poor, my camry sedan got that in the city, nearly 40 on the highway... and cost me 15,000. new.

Chevy volt really is an epic fail.

Re: Chevy Volt=Epic Fail
your forgetting you dont have to plug in the volt if you choose not too

it also uses hybrid tech to regenerate power to the battery cells, coasting/braking, etc

similar to a prius, that you can't even plug in yet

still the Volt is overpriced and the prius even older gen prius gets better MPG

i sold my prius not because it was a bad car, but because i was bored driving it. And got a car in stick, that gets me about 37mpg..which is good enough for what i drive

the prius on avg got 51mpg i had, with 70,000 on the odo, was a reliable car. Just got bored with it

Now in all of this, you have to get "Onstar," and face the nanny state that can turn you car off anytime. So Epic Fail on top of Epic Fail.

This is a new technology and it will cost more at the beginning. The EPA rates the Volt at 93mpg equivalent. People bought VCRs and Microwaves when the cost 1000s of dollars in today's money. ALL new cars are essentially computers on wheels.

Also OP....

If you were to fully use the Volt's full battery capacity every time, as they did in this test, you would kill the battery pack very quickly.

Factor in that replacement cost.....or plan on only draining the batteries to 1/2 capacity....which cuts the mileage in 1/2.

The batteries are already controlled by a computer which does not allow full discharge and they carry a 100K warranty or longer. Hyundai just announced a lifetime warranty on their battery. Capacity of charge can change due to different types of use which is why they use a range.

American Motors made an electric AMC Pacer in about 1979. It had about a dozen batteries in the back and went about 50 miles on a charge at 55MPH.

So basicly they could make a better electric car in the 70's than they can now. Pathetic.
