Doctor or psychiatrist for anxiety? Heart pounding?
I don't know which one to go to since I hate going to anything like that. This heart pounding seems to be triggered by thoughts, I've had it a few years now. Over time I have more control over it but i suspect it's ruining my life as a wage slave! I used to care, I used to play the game, now it freaks me out and really makes one wonder if you're going crazy or going sane. Mostly I just want this feeling to happen when my life is actually in danger like it's supposed to, not when the phone rings or I hear a noise or read something.

Anyone had this problem and found something that helped? I've heard low doses of anti anxiety meds can help kick the brain out of this pattern. I also saw a doc on tv talking about curing anxiety with a weird video game type system where your brain is the controller. I think it's all about the pathways of thought and physical reactions, somewhere my fight or flight got mixed up.

Anyone know where to start?

You can get meds from a regular doctor. Xanax is handed out like candy these days. If you don't have any heart issues, beta blockers are wonderful to manage anxiety.

I'd start with a regular doctor to rule out a heart condition. Then let him/her refer you to a shrink if you need anxiety meds.

Meditation and exercise will help tremendously. Also, you can go to a health food store which sells homeopathic meds and get one for anxiety. They work and have NO side effects.

If you go to a doctor I suggest your family doctor first because once you go to a psychiatrist you will be on meds for the rest of your life if they have their way about it.

What did c2c say?

I really don't want to go anywhere but I think I need some kind of "help" after trying for 3 years myself.

Meds are a huge turn off but I'm down to try

Thanks everyone. Yea I was thinking I should go to the regular doctor first, haven't been in like 6 years but I'm only 32 so I shouldn't have any physical problems.

I've been meditating and exercising but to no avail.

Perhaps I will try the homeopathic meds before going to the dreaded doctor

I had this too, went to a doc (just my family doc, $20 copay)in the middle of an attack so they could get a feel for it, my bp was 160/100, face red, hives, just, freaking out, shaking, heart racing. can barely talk right when they hit.

he gave me a script for Paxil and Ativan. I took them for a good 6 months until I learned what it felt like to not be freaked out all the time, then stopped taking them b/c I hate taking any meds.... Did fairly okay but

Well, big mistake, it came back again, so I took my first paxil in 6 months today :-( I guess I just need help, can't do it on my own...

You can get help from just a normal doc, it is pretty common these days, what with everything going to shit, if you are predisposed to anxiety to begin with, it's not a fun time lately...

Try to everything you can before getting on Xanax. It's so addictive it isn't even funny. It can ruin your life. I think the beta blocker idea is worth a try.

I'm in the same boat. I hate checking the mail because it sends me into a panic attack thinking there will be something bad, and I pretty much have a heart attack if someone knocks on my door. I hate it. It's debilitating, but I know that Xanax isn't the answer.

I don't know what state you are in but there are numerous stores which sell homeopathic meds. The people working in these stores are also very, very helpful when you tell them you need help. Some might try to steer you to herbs and such. Stick to Homeopathic meds exclusively and you will see a great improvement.

Good luck... I know how you feel. :(

Wow sounds like me! One time my boyfriend joked that the landlord was outside and I nearly died with fear. Stupid! I mean it's not like my life is in danger from the landlord!

Thank you A Friend, I will try that first and see if there is any progress. I've been getting it bad today. Usually comes every few days now but before all the meditation and thought control I would have it for days at a time and everyday in between. It can't be healthy!

Medications that block adrenaline response(so called beta-blockers) are effective for stage fright and many forms of tachycardia and would likely be more of a help than tranquilizers.
In his book, "Between Two Ages," Brzezinski wrote: "The technetronic era involves the gradual appearance of a more controlled society. Such a society would be dominated by an elite, unrestrained by traditional values."

Re: Doctor or psychiatrist for anxiety? Heart pounding?
This sounds silly, I guess, but watch carefully the times you feel anxious.

Do you drink a lot of coffee, or soda? Do you eat a lot of sugar?

Even chocolate, God forbid, can put some people into anxiety attacks.

I would keep a food diary, and then try and see if you get anxious after you have eaten one of those things.

Don't get on anti-anxiety medication. It's addictive and hard to get off of.

Re: Doctor or psychiatrist for anxiety? Heart pounding?
You might find Dr. Mercola's EFT technique to be helpful.

One Simple Solution Addresses 6 Different Types of Anxiety Disorders

An alarming 40 million Americans are suffering with some kind of anxiety disorder. This is believed to be a conservative estimate as many people who have mild or moderate anxiety may not report their symptoms to doctors.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), two types of treatments are available to people with anxiety disorders -- medication and/or talk therapy.

A doctor may prescribe antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs or beta-blockers and different types of psychotherapy. It sounds as if the treatment process is one of trial and error as the NIH document states, "If one treatment doesn't work, the odds are good that another one will. So don't give up hope."

EFT is one technique that has an 80 percent success rate for any type of anxiety.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) offers hope to people suffering with any of the six main types of anxiety disorder. EFT founder, Gary Craig, developed a single, streamlined solution to anxiety by looking at the true cause of anxiety and other emotional and physical illnesses.

According to EFT theory, at the root of anxiety are unresolved emotional issues and a disrupted energy meridian system (or chi), both of which are easily balanced with EFT's do-it-yourself acupressure system. The process involves certain meridian points on the body being stimulated with a simple fingertip tapping process.

Anyone can do EFT and gain relief and peace without lengthy talk therapy and complicated medications. Anxiety disorders are often accompanied by other issues like depression or substance abuse and EFT has a proven track record in alleviating these issues as well.

We are not advocating that EFT replace medical care, but EFT often works when nothing else will, it has no known side effects and the results are often permanent. When used correctly, EFT has an 80 percent success rate.

Re: Doctor or psychiatrist for anxiety? Heart pounding?
Forget the meds--they're a last resort.

Try taking 250 mg magnesium daily, before bed is best, but anytime is ok.

Valerian, an herbal supplement you can get most anywhere, has been shown in studies to perform as well as Haldol. It works really well for a lot of people.

Take a good B vitamin with all the Bs in it--now just one or two. Niacin (vitamin B3) is an adrenaline antagonist, as I remember, and will help with the anxiety as well.

Good luck! My youngest daughter struggles with this, and we are able to well control it with natural supplements.

Re: Doctor or psychiatrist for anxiety? Heart pounding?
Palpitations do not necessarily reflect problems WITH the heart. Often, the heart reflects other problems with organs and glands. Especially triggers from hidden parasites and toxins. With parasites comes often, the release of mercury toxicity. Once that is addressed, the heart can calm down. If you can find an advanced ( because beginner practitioners do not have the knowledge for this yet) nutritional response testing Doctors or practitioners who can target the problem with testing, solutions can be found. Its many times, not all in your head. The heart is the sacred atom tone for the entire body and it will sense EM in the system gone awry or disruptors.

Hey fucktard wage slave... Since you are so stupid as to consider going to people paid to kill you why not cut to the Chase and play in traffic. I think you would be doing the world a favor. Or you could educate yourself in reguards to natural health, stop eating like shit and probably live a long life. As you label yourself a wage slave, I suggest playing in traffic, as you people seldom pull your heads out of your assess long enough to change anything.

There are many ways to treat anxiety. You can take anti-anxiety drugs or you can go to a therapist. Talk therapy works very well. Anxiety is very treatable.

As for worrying that you'll be anxious in a real emergency, this never happens to me. I am a hockey player and an IT technician. When the shit really hits the fan, I step up. Anxiety is generally about a loss of control and more often related to more mundane subjects like relationships, money, jobs, that bridge you have to cross twice a day. That sort of thing. I'd find a counselor that specializes in cognitive therapy. That would be a good place to start. Good luck man.

Curiositycat that's a good idea, I've tried stopping caffeine and alcohol but never considered food because my diet never changed.

That eft therapy sounds like something I've tried AC, called energy medicine and it does help a little.

All in all I think my wires got crossed somewhere because before it all started I was into some serious adrenaline rushing activities. When it got to be too dangerous and I quit is when it started. I wanted to kinda disappear into the woodwork so to speak, too many death threats. It was on this path of trying to get away from the life threatening activities that it all started and that's why I think it's a mental/physical combo having to do with the adrenaline.

I definitely don't stress when things get really scary. It's like I have that real emergency adrenaline under control. Definitely mundane crap that freaks me out.

Hmm I guess it's possible to stop it? Wow that would be sooooo nice

been there. Fought this for many, many years. No, I don't have med issues or financial/family problems. Actually, I've got a decent life. Truly believe it's a body chemistry issue. Not overweight and eat healthy most of the time. Exercise at least 7 hours a week. The only thing that has ever helped me is Lexepro without any of the dreaded side-effects. I just told my regular dr what was going on and decided to give Lex a try. Finally, I got rid of the majority of anxiety/depression at 10mg a day. My dr ordered 20mg tabs to be taken at half tab a day to save money. I still have normal feelings but not the constant anxiety, panic attacks, depression, etc... I don't walk around "in a fog". I'm very thankful I found help.

Low magnesium causes anxiety and 90% of the population is low in magnesium. So I'd say start there while getting off stimulants (like caffeine etc) and artificial substances and sugar.

Go to WalMart.

Purchase a blood pressure gauge to check

Then watch your diet - eliminate salt, msg.. eat your veggies and avoid fast food, microwaved, processed canned, ect.
