We we're locked in due to the roads not being passable. We had no electricity. We shared our food with our neighbors and worked during the day to clean the roads in our area and clean up the debris. At night we played cards by candle light and talked. That went on for nearly a week without any issues. When the roads were clear enough an ice truck came thru and brought us ice which was a nice treat. They shipped huge generators into my job and I went back to work during the second week and still didn't have power to my house but it was good to get out. It wasn't chaos. We worked together because we had to. |

Most people would be in denial. Stores would be looted in fist two days. First 3-4 days are quiet, and people learn to cook what did they have. Within 7-10 days there will be the beginning of panic and the start of martial law. Within 3 weeks, if the govt can't control the crowds, there will be rioting in the streets. Within 8 weeks, law and order will totally break down. Welcome to the beginning of the end. By the way, how is the rest of the world faring during all of this, not so well probably killing each other. |

Do have a supply of all sorts of food/cleaning products/personal stuff. If I survive to use it is the next question. Depends on what happens. We're in the Puget Sound area and can anticipate a major tsunami sooner or later. Will it hit us where we are? Dunno. Planning to be prepared, but we're seniors, so we might not be the best physically. We're willing to share with neighbors and those closeby. We can't expect to survive as just a family. Security in numbers and all that... We'll try to stay current with supplies but many things can happen to change the game strategy. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2926765 I believe especially if you live in a city environment and end up stuck there, you will need to have enough food and water to hunker down in one spot as both the frightened aggressive masses along with the police and military. Just look at the shooting of unarmed civilians crossing a bridge during hurricane Katrina and how after many took refuge in the Louisiana Superdome and when the conditions deteriorated and no longer safe or clean the people were not allowed to leave. One should strive to be self-sufficient and not rely upon the government, as at the very least you will be disappointed and far more vulnerable. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1094960 United States 04/05/2012 03:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | first before you decide that Preppers are crazy ~ link ~ The truth is that our "just in time" inventory and delivery systems leave us incredibly vulnerable to a nationwide disaster. Quoting: Bunker Bill You see, it is very expensive to hold and store inventory, so most manufacturers and retailers rely on a continual flow of deliveries that are scheduled to arrive "just in time", and this significantly reduces their operating expenses. This is considered to be good business practice for manufacturers and retailers, but it also means that if there was a major nationwide transportation disruption that our economic system would grind to a halt almost immediately. Once store shelves are picked clean, they would not be able to be replenished until trucks could get back on the road. In the event of a major nationwide disaster, that could be quite a while. So what could potentially cause a nationwide transportation shutdown? [link to theeconomiccollapseblog.com] Well, it is easy to imagine a lot of potential scenarios - a volcanic eruption, a historic earthquake, an EMP attack, a solar megastorm, a war, a major terror attack, an asteroid strike, a killer pandemic, mass rioting in U.S. cities, or even martial law. If something caused the trucks to stop running, life in America would immediately start changing. So exactly what would that look like? A Timeline Showing the Deterioration of Major Industries Following a Truck Stoppage The first 24 hours • Delivery of medical supplies to the affected area will cease. • Hospitals will run out of basic supplies such as syringes and catheters within hours. Radiopharmaceuticals will deteriorate and become unusable. • Service stations will begin to run out of fuel. • Manufacturers using just-in-time manufacturing will devebunnyponent shortages. • U.S. mail and other package delivery will cease. Within one day • Food shortages will begin to develop. • Automobile fuel availability and delivery will dwindle, leading to skyrocketing prices and long lines at the gas pumps. • Without manufacturing components and trucks for product delivery, assembly lines will shut down, putting thousands out of work. Within two to three days • Food shortages will escalate, especially in the face of hoarding and consumer panic. • Supplies of essentials—such as bottled water, powdered milk, and canned meat—at major retailers will disappear. • ATMs will run out of cash and banks will be unable to process transactions. • Service stations will completely run out of fuel for autos and trucks. • Garbage will start piling up in urban and suburban areas. • Container ships will sit idle in ports and rail transport will be disrupted, eventually coming to a standstill. Within a week • Automobile travel will cease due to the lack of fuel. Without autos and busses, many people will not be able to get to work, shop for groceries, or access medical care. • Hospitals will begin to exhaust oxygen supplies. Within two weeks • The nation’s clean water supply will begin to run dry. Well, I am rooting for the Doom Preppers and some real DOOM because I don't want to pay my mortage and I don't want the Miami Heat to win a Championship. Can you give some timelines or dates where the preppers either look brilliant or stupid? |

Isn't auto correct something else? Seriously though, I don't think people in my area are prepared for any disruption to our shipping industry. My husband works in shipping and we pay close attention for any sign of disruption. The recent uptick in fuel costs has me very concerned but I am more concerned about the huge increase in commodity foods last year. I do LDS canning with a group of friends and over the past year, the items sold at cost have gone up about 25%. Even if there is food on the shelves, people might not be able to afford the food! I encourage people I know to stock up and do it now. |
