has been about 20 quakes this week...definitely a bit of activity there...Which is normally the monthly amount...

There has been something going on there for awhile too...but I am suspect that it is something that has been erupting underwater nearby.....I think Raoul will show some activity and am bummed they took the lake temp and depth readings away from the site as they would have been great indicators...

did you see how the raoul camera went from clear to totally foggy between 10.30am and 11am this morning?

there have been lots of these lumpy, messy signals on many of our drums lately

in the past it has been a precursor to large nz/kermadec/fiji quakes...

was just flicking through the drums...the activity seems to have moved from Raoul to the south a little..im seeing magma movement...centred roughly between both islands atm...

yes, i noticed that this morning too

i have been seeing lots of magma type signals on drums all over the country of late

and enough missing data on quite a few drums at various times, to get anyone wondering wtf is happening under nz right now

what i have noticed is that whenever our drums get like this, it seems to be a precursor to a large quake, either here in or around nz, or at kermadec or fiji, it is a definite repeating pattern

Quake to leave Wellington cut off for months.

A big quake could leave Wellington reliant on barges and helicopters for survival, new disaster predictions show.

Massive landslides would cut off Porirua, the Hutt Valley and Wellington from the rest of New Zealand and from one another, with inbound roads taking up to four months to clear.

All three areas would rely on barges and helicopters to ferry in food, clean water and vital medical supplies.

The would be no power, water or gas for at least three weeks, and for more than two months in some Wellington suburbs.

Wellington city would be cut off for the longest, with no power for at least two months and no gas for three.

It would take at least 55 days to open State Highway 2 between the Hutt Valley and Wellington, and three weeks to connect the capital and Porirua.

The grim predictions are contained in a report by the Wellington Lifelines Group, which includes 20 of the region's major infrastructure companies and civil defence authorities......(more)

yikes...

wellington people are perhaps more prepared for a large quake than those in other areas because they are aware that at some point it will happen because it is inevitable

same for those in the christchurch area, due to what has already happened there

but not so for many other areas where there is seismic and volcanic risk, eg the BOP area, keeping in mind mayor island as well as the many undersea volcanoes close to us

and another example is the east cape area, where there is obviously something worrying going down off shore

tarn, when you were living at tauranga, did you find that many people in the community had any awareness of the many live volcanoes on their doorstep?

i guess the recent installation of tsunami siren(s?) in the area will have bought the risk here to more people's attention..

Thousands converge in Australia for total solar eclipse November 13-14, 2012

November 10, 2012 – SPACE – People from around the world are converging on the coast of northeast Australia. The attraction isn’t the Great Barrier Reef, just offshore, or the surrounding rain forests full of wildlife and exotic plants. They’re going to see a total eclipse of the sun. On the morning of Nov. 14th (Australia time), about an hour after sunrise, the Moon will pass directly in front of the sun. Residents and visitors of the city of Cairns, also known as the Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, will enjoy an early morning eclipse lasting 2 minutes with the sun only 14 degrees above the eastern horizon. NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak has a rating scheme for natural wonders. “On a scale of 1 to 10,” he says, “total eclipses are a million.” Even the reef itself will be momentarily forgotten by onlookers as the Moon’s cool shadow sweeps across the beach and the ghostly tendrils of the solar corona surround the black lunar disk. But there’s more to this event than tourism. Scientists are attending, too. For researchers, the brief minutes of totality offer a window into one of the deepest mysteries of solar physics: The mystery of coronal heating. In plain language, they’d like to know why the sun’s outer atmosphere or “corona” is so hot. The surface temperature of the sun is only 6000 degrees C. Yet the corona above it is much warmer, a million degrees Celsius or even more. To understand the physics involved, astronomers have developed instruments called coronagraphs, which block the glare of the sun to reveal the faint corona. Three spacecraft, SOHO and the twin STEREO probes, currently monitor the solar corona using these devices. But no manmade instrument can match Earth’s natural satellite. The Moon is nature’s greatest coronagraph. During an eclipse, “the moon reveals the innermost corona, which manmade coronagraphs have trouble seeing,” explains Shadia Habbal of the Institute for Astronomy in Hawaii. “That is where all the magnetic field and physical processes responsible for heating the corona are evolving most rapidly.” –NASA

Only the eyes at risk from dark day ahead

Those who believe a complete solar eclipse of the sun means bad news all round may be worried about what will happen later this year.
On November 14 a total eclipse will occur in a narrow path (the path of totality) across the South Pacific, while a partial solar eclipse will be visible over a region thousands of kilometers wide.
This will be the closest New Zealand has come to a total solar eclipse as it has been for nearly 50 years.
While missing out on total darkness, parts of northern New Zealand including Auckland will experience a partial eclipse with over 80% of the sun obscured. Christchurch and points north will see at least 60% of the sun covered.
Maximum eclipse over New Zealand will occur around 10:30am and Wellington will see about 75% of the sun obscured.
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between Earth and the sun, totally or partially obscuring the sun for a viewer on Earth, turning day into darkness.
John Talbot, president of the Wellington Astronomical Society, says while solar eclipses are quite common as they occur every year or two, they are usually somewhere else in the world.
“The path of totality is very narrow, so for any one place to see a total eclipse more than once in quick succession is quite rare.
“In a number of cases, the sun either rises or sets in eclipse, so only the last or first part of the eclipse is visible.”
Mr Talbot says the society has permission from Wellington City Council to use the City-to-Sea bridge near Civic Square for a public viewing on the morning of the eclipse.
The society will be using a sun funnel mounted on a small telescope, making it suitable for solar eclipse viewing.
“Our main objective in Wellington for the event will be to try to measure the time of maximum eclipse accurately, as well as taking photos and measuring images to establish the positions of the moon and sun,” says Mr Talbot.
The path of totality begins at dawn in the north of Northern Australia. After crossing the Gulf of Carpentaria and York Peninsula including Cairns, the total eclipse path then heads across the southern Pacific, touching no further land.
At least one member of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand will be travelling on a boat along the path of totality as it occurs.
This will be the closest a total eclipse has come to New Zealand since May 31, 1965, when total darkness occurred just after sunrise north of Whangarei.
On September 9, 1885, a total eclipse was visible across Wellington, Nelson, Wairarapa and Manawatu.
In 2028, a total eclipse will occur along the bottom of the South Island, while between 2035 and 2038 three eclipses will occur over central New Zealand.
How dangerous is it to look at the eclipse?

WHILE we may be tempted to stare at the natural phenomenon, there a warnings that an eclipse can cause serious damage to eyes.
Those who think that wearing sunglasses will make a difference need to reconsider.
John Talbot says while sunglasses shade visible light, they do not thwart infra-red light.
“Even dark welding goggles cannot be assured of protecting your eyes from the sun.
“It’s very important to get the message out that nobody should look directly at the sun. The retina has no sensitivity to pain, and the damage can remain unnoticed for hours or days.”
Mr Talbot says specially made dark glasses are available to purchase through the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand.
