Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16999455 I don't know...sounds like all hell is breaking loose down there. At this point ...anything is possible. I heard reports earlier of a barge breaking loose on the Mississippi and crashed into a 47 foot crew boat and sank the boat. Grand Isle is under water, levees over topping now, power out, trees down, roads closed, All they need is a lightning strike to hit that sinkhole and the whole area is going to blow! Those poor people. I feel so bad for them. And this storm is a LONG way from being over. |

Quoting: .. 22563383 You can see the high, the long dark band above the coastal states. [link to weather.msfc.nasa.gov] ---- What would happen? Will it burn itself out or turn into an enormous storm? You don't want it to sit in once place over warm water and churn. That warm water is feeding the beast! Not sure how long it can sit there. I wonder if it could sit long enough for the theoretical hyper-cane? Hypercanes require a minimum ocean temperature of 48 degrees celcius..warmer than any ocean has ever been by about 15 degrees so a hypercane just ain't possible. If it stalls for long enough it will actually cause upwelling.. ' When a hurricane stalls, its movement is has fallen below 5mph, or its movement is erratic over a small area, the wave action caused by the strong surface winds churns the ocean surface and produces upwelling. This has the effect of cooling the temperature of the sea surface over an area 200 to 300 miles across. The result is weakening. It is possible for a hurricane to stall in one area long enough that it dissipates. In 2004, Hurricane Frances stalled off the southeast Florida coast long enough that the core of the hurricane collapsed. Frances eventually made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane, instead of the earlier expected Category 3. ' [link to www.hurricanezone.net] But it also has the devastating affect of prolonged heavy rain fall and severe flooding....not a nice scenario ! Thank you for the info. I learned of this from mega-disasters. It has been awhile since I have seen it so I wasn't sure what it would take. The cooling effect does make sense being that the hurricane blocks out the sunlight for an extended period of time. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 16999455 United States 08/29/2012 03:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Maybe they steered it and stalled it to refill the mississippi, which vital for shipping. This story is from 6 days ago. Shallow Miss. River could hurt shipments Drought-starved rivers and lakes are causing trouble for everyone from recreational boaters to major shippers who use barges to haul commerce on the shrunken Mississippi River. Barges and their towboats accumulate alongside the Mississippi banks of the Mississippi River near Greenville, Miss. Low water levels have restricted traffic on an 11-mile stretch of the Mississippi near Greenville, Miss., clogging distribution of Midwest agriculture products. Another barge ran aground Wednesday, forcing shipping lanes to close again as crews work to refloat the vessel. More than 100 barges and towboats are stranded, and low water is expected to hinder cargo shipments until October, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The shuttered waterway likely means increased transportation costs for grain headed south and delays in fertilizer headed north for farm fields. [link to www.usatoday.com] |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22631077 So the longer Isaac lays just outside its gates, the worse it will become. Yes 4 sure...there are already huge issues due to flooding and SO much more rain to come...the slower the storm the worse its going to get in that respect...unless of course it changes it path or something! I nearly lol when i saw this hurricane track from Hurricane Gordon back in 1994...it obviously couldnt decide where to go! [link to en.wikipedia.org] |

Miggy...It's soooo sad. I have been listening to various new station in the New Orleans area all night. The worst part is, these people have a solid 24 hours of rain still to deal with. It just breaks my heart to think how much suffering that area has seen, Katrina, PB spill, now this! |
