El Hierro / Canary Islands - Most Recent Information By The Most Diligent - And Recap Of Past Year

I could have sworn I saw an earthquake at Canary Island on USGS, yesterday or day before. Now its not there. I did see this though. There have been 4 volcanic earthquakes in past week.

I think the Canary Islands are considered a dead subject by most. I don't know Isis, maybe it is. But I keep coming here and checking updates every day or so....just in case.

I also check for updates and look at the graphs every day or so. I think it's habit now after watching so long.
Canaries will occasionally give us more surprises I'll bet.

- 5 earthquakes since December 3, most of them very weak but also shallower than the ones from last week.
- It looks more and more that IGN is abandoning his task as the CHIE seismogram shows often errors (more and more). We trust on them to keep all material in the best shape …

- Rather lot of activity today (thank you ER reader Gos for informing us). In only 35 minutes various very weak volcanic earthquakes below the center of the island gradually shifting to the south. Depths like the latest swarm. The next 48 hours will indicate whether this was a unique event or wether a new episode will start.

Problem though is the malfunction of the seismographs, we have seen that when one doesn´t work properly all 7 seem to have problems. That means you simply cannot trust on the data. This is also the case for today. Due to the "crisis" there is no money for IGN for improvement. A bad thing but the Spanish government has more direct problems to deal with.

- Only 2 earthquakes so far the last 2 days, but the location of the epicenters is showing that something is really going on. We would not be surprised at all if a new activity period would start. Both epicenters are located in the direct Sabinosa area, exactly the same area where the last swarm started.

- It is getting more and more interesting again (Thanks Goz for pushing us). One of the strongest earthquakes occurred on Thursday, a M2.6 which was felt by the islanders. This stronger earthquake indicated still the strength at the +20 km layer. The other earthquakes are occurring in the shallower 10 km depth zone, but these are weak to very weak. What happened the last couple of days has almost the same patters than during the last serious swarm episode (2 layers – the strongest ones at +20, the weaker ones at the 10 km level)

- Looks like El Hierro want to give a sign that it is not completely over yet ! An earthquake swarm has started in the Frontera area.
The depth is currently located at 17 to 21 km, in other words no real risk for a quick eruption at this level.
Keep looking together with us and report by means of the comment section if you read or see something special.

- Activity continues in the somewhat deeper 17 to 21 km layer in the same Las Puntas – Frontera area. As the HT remains almost flat compared to the strong amplitude yesterday afternoon, it looks that the magma has been stopped at the current stage. Only earthquakes are generated. Next 24 hours will give us a clue whether the magma will remain locked in or will find a way to another point.
- The only point to the south of the swarm is a 10.6 km depth earthquake which you can see in the list. We do not think that there is a relation in between the swarm and the isolated 10.6 km quake

- Yesterday IGN has listed 114 earthquakes, the last part of the list a little weaker than the first part. The depth remained at 16-18 km (no change vs the day before).
- ONLY 15 earthquakes today and all of them are considerably weaker (only 1 +M2). This crisis looks to be very short-lived.

A comment from Joke Volta, who has picked up her art work again, but wants to share a few words with our readers :
W will to wait a few more days to have a better view about the current intrusion. As it looks now, there is not enough “power” to end up in an eruption. But..well..this can change, just as the” sudden” appearance of this activity yesterday afternoon.
In the Golfo/Frontera-area people do feel the quakes. Down here in El Pinar, I do not notice movements…
It surely would not be safe to enter lava-tubes or discovering caves at this moment for the reason that there can be a gas-escape based on the current activity.
I hope that every visitor of the island will get information after or even before they arrive. Until now it is not dangerous, but I do recommend to get a steady information about the situation.Earthquake-report offers this – regards to all of you, Joke

- The Salvamar Adhara has been cruising in the Las Calmas sea earlier today (based on data from Marinetraffic.com).
- The seismic activity has weakened considerably since 11 AM UTC. Strongest earthquake M2.6, depths unchanged.

- NO real change at the moment. Same hypocenter depth. The AVCAN map below shows the epicenters of the last earthquakes (77 since midnight now). The quakes are gradually migrating to the unpopulated western part of the island, the greater area of the second last very intense seismic activity, only at that time most quakes were recorded at the deeper +20 km layer. In general, we do think that the present activity has chosen a new path, mainly in depth.

- 143 earthquakes yesterday alone !
- 24 earthquakes so far today (at least stronger ones as the number of volcanic earthquakes is much higher than this number). The strongest earthquake since midnight was a M3.1. The depth (or magma intrusion depth) is still located in between 16 and 18 km.
- The third map is the epicenter/hypocenter map. The red squares are showing the seismic activity of the last 12 hours. This activity is mainly located in the Sabinosa area (in the sea and below land).
- Important to look at for the following hours is an eventual migration of the epicenter and/or hypocenter location. Not a single event is important but the average of multiple events.
