Best El Hierro Thread On GLP - Canary Islands - ACTIVITY HAS RETURNED - AGAIN!
Over 40 quakes were reported on Hierro alone yesterday, many with very shallow depths. 3.8 hit just North of Tenerife as well, bringing curiosity to the region...what's next?

"Update 07/08 – 10:21 UTC
An article in Diario El Hierro reports about some findings of the University of La Laguna. The professor indicates that eruption material from El Hierro is among the strongest eruption radioactive material known so far. Click here to read this (Spanish) article."

"The stones of the eruption El Hierro, the most radioactive in the world"

"The stones that surfaced as a result of volcanic earthquake crisis last year affected the island of El Hierro are the most radioactive in the world, told Efe Antonio Darwich physicist, professor, Department of Soil Science and Geology University of La Laguna."

Original page in spanish [link to www.diariodeavisos.com]

So...they are totally dismayed as to how these rocks could be so full of radiation? Humm...let's try this explanation!

Thread: OLD NUCLEAR WASTE DUMP SITE OFF EL HIERRO! OMG!

The United States used to use the coastal waters of El Hierro as a nuclear dumping ground. The idea that our nuclear waste has been drawn into the subversion plates, burnt down into the magma and then redistributed through El Hierro's underwater eruption is quite a possible scenario!

''
These eruptions are commonly phreatomagmatic eruptions, representing violent explosions caused by rising basaltic or andesitic magma coming into contact with abundant, shallow groundwater or surface water.

Note the other sources reporting this. They're ALL in agreement...El Hierro poses just as much threat as any of the other islands.

This topic was posted on back on the 1st of August...at that point there was 700+ quakes. Now, 4 weeks later, we're at 4,200 quakes! THIS IS DEFINATELY SUGGESTIVE of increased activity!!!

Humm...is this an annual regularity for USGS? Before major storms? Or...is this something new? It wouldn't take much for the government to cause this situation to occur.

Two things to watch for: heavy seisicity or volcanic eruption on any of the islands coupled with very heavy rainfall, especially on La Palma.

Its likely that the mechanism for flank failure is the water trapped within the island over thousands of years which sits behind non-permeable rock layers. Since the western flank of La Palma has already slipped recently, it may fail completely with minimal impetus.

Tick tock....

Well...the rain is definitely there. All of our major hurricanes are starting just south of that region. They come off the African North West coast and then build in pressure and size.

The tsunami threat is from La Palma island, NOT El Hierro.

huffy
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1527450

la palma's only about 50 miles away, if memory serves me correct.

not so much of a stretch to think activity here won't trigger it there
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1525382

In normal earthquake activity I'd say that this distance might be enough of a barrier...at least one could argue that. However, in a volcanic region where seismicity is raging, I'd say that the volcanic element makes it much more likely to be near enough to cause effects at La Palma. BUT...notice...the video states that any of the western facing islands that have a sheer face like that of La Palma could be a danger. El Hierro definitely has a west facing wall and has the exact same rock slide area potentially capable of falling in the sea during a major quake. The only difference with La Palma is that it already has a major sheer crack through the top of its ridges.

"Computer modelling indicates that the resulting initial wave may attain a local amplitude (height) in excess of 600 metres (1,969 ft) and an initial peak to peak height that approximates to 2 kilometres (1 mi), and travel at about 1,000 kilometres per hour (621 mph) (approximately the speed of a jet aircraft), inundating the African coast in about 1 hour, the southern coast of England in about 3.5 hours, and the eastern seaboard of North America in about 6 hours, by which time the initial wave would have subsided into a succession of smaller ones each about 30 metres (98 ft) to 60 metres (197 ft) high. These may surge to several hundred metres in height and be several kilometres apart but retaining their original speed."

Love your avatar idgits.
People like to deny and pretend this kind of doom doesn't bother them and everything is peechy keen. However, when they see the wave, they freak the FUCK out. Very intersting human psychology. Fortuntely I've observed it and learned from it.
I live maybe 30 min. drive from long island sound. If any of the water does carry over. I will be at a high elevation in far less than the 7+ hrs. or whatever is estimated for the wave to hit the coast.

Dudes. That shit happens and the east coast get hit by a hundred feet tsunami going at 1000 km/h... say goodbye to the 25+ nuclear power plants on the east coast.

Say hello to 25+ Fukushimas... but worse.

Say hello to at least 20 million dead corpses being all over the coast.

Say hello to several big cities being wiped off the map.

"The number of daily earthquakes recorded on the smallest of the Canary Islands (Spain), El Hierro, has increased considerably in recent days. The Instituto Volcanologico de Canarias has also reported a 1cm inflation over part of the island’s volcano following on from GPS analysis.

The total number of tremors recorded during the past five weeks has now exceeded 4200, according to the Instituto Geografico Nacional (IGN).

The majority of the earth tremors range between 1 and 3 magnitude. More than 431 earthquakes, including one measuring 3.5 magnitude on the Richter Scale, were recorded on Monday (22 August) alone."

This is very noteworthy. This much activity means that the Canary Islands may be coming back to life! We have gone through the possibility of a tsunami created by a massive quake or volcanic explosion on those islands here on GLP. This MAY be just the event needed to initiate the conditions needed to cause this to happen! Check out this youtube video where scientists discuss the way this may in fact happen. VERY informative.

Explanation of how Canary Island quake could lead to a MASSIVE MEGA TSUNAMI that would wipe out entire U.S. East Coast.

Going from a 600 earthquake count from a few months ago to a 4200+ count to now in such a short period of time is not a good sign at all. If this huge fucking mass slides into the ocean, we can wave goodbye to Earth being an inhabitable planet for our future generations. And that is not some vague Elenin, the-maybe-doom-bringer kind of speculation. That is guaranteed.

Irish spiritual healer Joe Coleman says that Our Lady predicted that tsunamis would hit both sides of the Atlantic and cause untold damage to the United States and Europe on Sunday, though none were reported.

The oceans will explode - The Atlantic Ocean - Three major volcanic explosions under the sea - Tsunamis both sides of the Ocean between America and Europe. Fire will fall from the heavens. Ireland is under massive threat from the evil one. Pray Pray Pray for peace,” reads part of the message relayed to Coleman from Mary.

Now, this is some real good doom! I hope the mega-tsunami waits until everyone is back in Washington. It would be a waste of good doom if the politicians weren't there. If DC goes under with all hands on board, we could start over with politicians that have actually read the Constitution. Losing New York City wouldn't hurt too bad either.
Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1519101

 Quoting: ymp135 1528363

I've read that the wave would be so massive as to wipe out all east coast areas to thirty miles inland. Is that right? Because I'm on Cape Cod and- hate to be vulgar- but I read about this kind of possibility and fairly piss my pants. It would take three days to evacuate all of Cape Cod because of the two single bridges on and off the peninsula. All of us who don't have an emergency plan and a damn good head start would be toast.

It is the discussion and steps that you need to have down just the same as in a fire. A meeting place and in this case some supplies.
