Difference is it was only 90 cents a gallon then. Even if you figure inflation that's what... still under $3 a gallon by today's standards. The middle class was much larger, and cost of living was much lower than it is now. This isn't similar to the situation in 1979 other than gas is being ration. The implications of this will be much further reaching than they ever were 33 years ago. Care to back up that ridiculous claim with some evidence? Gas rationing in the 70's was due to OPEC limiting the supply to the United States. The situation in California is due to the state having it's own particular formulation of gasoline different from the rest of the states and the fact that two of the state's refineries were offline for a period of time. While it sucks for California at the moment, it isn't that big of a deal. The refineries will eventually catch back up and the supply will be fine. California has gone through things like this before like the last time the damn Chevron plant in the bay area caught on fire. |

You can't walk on freeways and highways. I lived in Chula Vista for eight years so believe when I say, gas for cars is a very big deal there. Thats Southern California, plenty of places in Northern CA are walkable. You can walk from Felton to Santa Cruz over park trails, take a bus to San Jose, take a train to SF, walk over the Golden Gate bridge all the way to Mt. Tam and beyond if you feel like it. You'll never catch me moving to Southern California. You'd be extremely dependent on the flow of oil and water over vast distances. In San Francisco you could put a bucket under a tree in the Presidio overnight and gather enough condensed fog to drink for a day. Could use some more bike trails here though, only good ones I know of are in Monterey. |

Even if we all got scooters, they would still squeeze us as much as they could. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10957384 Get a bicycle car, Rhodes Cars they can come with an electric motor that charges as you peddle down hills or just peddling. They go at least 40 miles an hour and is road worthy. Doesn't use gas, they make several styles including trucks. Never heard of these, but they sound interesting. I get a visual of "The Flintstones", though! LOL! DO THEY MAKE AN ARMOURED RHOADS CAR? Get real, you want protection so you can smash the opposition? Commecialism at its best. You are going to pay dearly for that. I'm a defensive driver, so I dont need a tank. |

It was when Katrina hit, and all the refineries that supplied us were offline. I think it was Katrina, but, the dist. of our sector of the country was the only one hit it seemed. We had a lot of price gouging, plastic bags on handles, fights in lines, cars running out of gas on the highway and streets.. It pretty much feels like TSHTF scenario. We had to do car pools of who had any gas to get to work, etc. etc.. ANd this not too long ago, They got up to charging us 5 dollars a gallon and this years ago!!... I feel ya, it's always good to have a little on hand and ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS keep your car topped b/c you never know what could come down the ol shitter... |

Everything in our lives from the time we start working until we die with our last paycheck is centered around cars. Better get used to it cause there sure is more of this shit coming wether we like it or not. This is a test. |

Back in early 70's if I member right we had a crisis, gas rationing and stations running out of das. Back then most cars got real shitty gas mileage. People would kill your Grandma and kids for gas. Saw quite a few fist fights and other stuff cause of it. Not a pretty sight. |

You were allowed a little, but, you were NOT ALLOWED to fill up any red cans. I told the cop to go over to the last pump b/c someone was doing it, and filled up my two red cans after he left.. It gets to that point folks.... YIKES!! btw, the other guy wasn't doing it, I just needed a diversion. I hope it doesn't get like that for you, but man it was a SCHOOLING! |
