Re: Vitamin D3 discussion
I have MS and there is research out there that vitamin D deficiency may be the root of MS. My neurologist had me tested and I was shocked to see that I was under 15 during the summer months.

I am now on a dose of 50,000 IU once per week (gelcaps). For some reason more is absorbed in higher doses less frequently. I don't recommend this for others. I am under a doctors care for this. But I have no ill side effects and in fact after a short time can see a difference in how I feel - a bit more energetic and for me even a small percentage better than my normal is a miracle to me.

When did you start taking it? It takes awhile to get to a therapeutic blood level. Hopefully you can get your blood level up to approx. 70 or so. You should see continued improvements over time.

Grassrootshealth also offers Vit D3 testing (approx 65 dollars)I had mine done in April of this year (after I had supplemented over the winter month's and of course into April) it was 82 nanagrams per blood liter. :-)

With a health condition that affects bone & joint health, numerous dexa scans, and a couple of autoimmune disorders, even the 8000 IU of Vitamin D3 I take a day doesn't get absorbed due to Celiac.

dont start taking high amounts of it religiously. it will mess your body up. The supplements contain other substances like calcium and what not that will fuck your body over if you take too much.

Sunlight form, go ahead take as much as possible.

To the AC with MS and to Fraeguile,
There is research out there that suggests you should NOT be taking Vit.D if you have an autoimmune disease! Please google the "Marshall Protocol". My son has a Vit.D3 level of 10 and Hashimotos. He was told by an endocrinologist to stay away from this vitamin. I believe the theory is that it revs up the immune system and by doing so it can exacerbate the immune attacks. I honestly don't know what to believe, but you may want to check it out.

Nice thread OP! This is one of my favorite topics. I've done a fair amount of research on this so I'll list some of the highlights here:

I posted this video on one of your other threads but for the sake of discussion... This video is from a doctor that has researched it more than anyone else I've come across. It's targeted towards a medical audience but there's good logic contained within it:

link: [link to www.youtube.com]

Here's another interview with a german, kind of holistic, doctor. The interview is done by Project Camelot, which I'm highly suspect of... but even a broken clock is right twice a day. Plus it's the interviewee that's of interest here, not the interviewer.

link: [link to www.youtube.com]
She has concluded the following benefits from vitamin D3:
- Bone health
- 16 cancer types
- Infections & Inflammations
- Depression & Neurological disorders
- Colds & Flu
- Immune System
- Tuberculosis
- Periodontitis
- Diabetes

Both of these videos are long, I admit. But if you really want to learn more from those with experience, these are worthwhile IMO.

I give this thread 5*'s and am very interested to hear what others have to say. Good on you OP!
cheers

*** the post below is not intended to be interpreted as medical or nutritional advice - please consult your physician before starting any new regimen ***

OP this is soley my experience, but I started taking D3 (5000 IU's per day) almost 3 years ago.

Before taking D3, I would usually get atleast 2 upper respiratory infections a year, sometimes mild one's that would last 7 to 10 days but on occassion they would last 3 weeks or so.

Since I started taking D3 I have not had even ONE cold, sore throat or upper respiratory infection.

I try to tell my wife, and others, to take it but they don't listen and they suffer in the winter months. It's SO easy to prevent the common cold with D3.

I also take several other vitamin supplements, as well as fish oil and krill oil.

You have to take D3 on a regular basis for it to work so don't try it for a week then stop. You will not get much benefit. It takes time to raise your blood levels of D3.

Just my $.02.
 Quoting: Outland

Same here. I take d3 from autumn to spring. I never get sick and I feel great. People know what I am taking but they still rather get sick or pay for shots. It's crazy.

Vitamin D increases the calcium absorption. The key then is to take Magnesium 500mg every day.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12698388

I'm glad someone mentioned this right away, we had a great long thread on Vitamin D here some time back and this issue of making sure you get plenty of magnesium came up, it's a really good point.

People get too much calcium as it is, and not enough magnesium. Taking Vitamin D can push the imbalance higher.

Magnesium is critical and we get very little from our food. A lot of supplement forms are poorly utilized. Don't take magnesium oxide, a common, cheap one, one to avoid. I have taken magnesium glycinate and recently magnesium chloride which comes in a liquid form.
 Quoting: Vision Thing

Read somewhere once that long term use of the d3 tablets that contain the calcium based stuff will clog the heart up. Any truth in that ?

Many babies are born with jaundice......and sun exposure will help it to go away fairly quickly. This happened with my youngest son.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24909996

No kidding. My kid got jaundice after she was born and had to get light therapy. That's how I got interested in vitamin D mainly because I thought my wife was getting enough vitamin D. It turns out, the recommendation amount was based on badly outdated research... 3 or 4 years in a row, no sinus infection, no serious illness, etc. Pretty amazing.

:Bullshit33:

Marshall Protocol is BS. It makes no sense at all.

Nearly all people with autoimmune disease will greatly benefit from vitamin D therapy.

A few people can't tolerate vitamin D therapy. Marshall has this specific disease where vitamin D makes it worse. Sucks for him but to say that everybody should not take vitamin D is bullshit. That's why nobody takes him seriously for that reason.

The sun is the absolute best source for D. I get anywhere from 1-4 hrs. a day (Florida) and at 68 never sick, play tennis 6-7 days a week and feel better than in my 30's.I never go to doctors and am on no drugs for 20 plus years. The sun is your best source for health, even animals know this, they lay in morning sun often.

You should be taking at least 10,000 IU daily, even after you deliver as it will secrete in your milk & will help boost the immunity of your baby.

^^^This makes me somewhat uneasy. Babies concentrate nutrients because they're so tiny. Agressive supplementation seems very unwise whether in utero or if breastfeeding afterwards.
There is good reason prenatal vites are quite weak seeming for a pregnant mother, that is because they can damage development, especially containing Iron or ferrous fumerate you can kill a baby with adult supplements!

no need to generalize. You could get huge amounts of natural vid d from the sun and the baby will be more healthy. As for the supplements vit d3 can be dangerous taken in huge amounts only because of the other substances they use in the capsule. like calcium.

Sadly much of the fish these days is ruined from mercury and other substances.

Scientist's have retracted their previous statement that too much fish is not good due to Mercury, They have found fish have a chemical that eliminates the mercury and when we eat the fish we acquire the same ability because we consume the chemical from the fish that eliminates the Mercury.

So eat all the fish you like.

The web site looks suspicious to me -- they don't even tell you how long the vials last or how many applications they contain.
 Quoting: Super Bowl Dave

first of all they are listed in the PDR for their high absorbtion rate and they are pure, organic and there are NO binders or fillers and wax like you have in pills and capsules.

my dad died three years ago from cancer and when he was sick his B levels were low at 200 and he sprayed four of them and five days later they took his blood and his levels were at 920.

it is all about absorbtion and with pills you are lucky to get 10% absorbed and then your body will get rid of the rest and that is why your urine is green, yellow or gold, that is the excess nutrients leaving your body cause it can only absorb so much so fast.

one tube is a thirty day supply with two sprays four times a day because your body flushes several times a day.

i use nine diferent products and they make me feel amazing because they feed your body properly.

believe me my friend, Mayor Pharm is a highly reputable company.

Re: Vitamin D3 discussion
I've been suspicious of this issue since the Vitamin D supplementation by prescription bandwagon started. I remember reading at the time (don't have a reference) that the government/AMA? had changed the Vitamin D blood serum range. In the former range eveyone pretty much fell in the normal range, then they changed the range and overnight millioons of people were clinically low. How does that happen? What was the rationale behind the change. I feel like there is more to us than has been let on.

Edit, I just had another thought. Suppose the sunscreen industry is responsible for clinically low levels of vitamin D? Thats a multi-billion dollar industry, hmmmm. They would certainly have a vested interest in the truth not being fully revealed, so just tell the sheeple to take this pill!!!
