Internet providers to begin warning customers who pirate content

How can they do that? That's like the post office opening all your mail and reading it, then warning you if they think you might be doing something naughty.

Do the ISPs want to be "Common Carriers" or not?

They tried the same thing in NZ and Australia but it violated privacy and was thrown out of parliment.

Too bad it passed in America. All it means is bootleg DVD's will return.

YouTube will need to be shut down. They are a platform for posting copyrighted material. There are programs that allow you to download those videos.
All download sites will need to be shut down, as they are platforms for piracy.
Any program, such as YouTubeDownloader, and others that allow the person to obtain and convert downloaded copyrighted material will be made illegal. That is, if they are serious.
Providing the tools for illegal downloading copyrighted material such as mp3 and video would be considered illegal and those who put them online would be prosecuted. Again, if the industry is serious about stopping piracy.
Let's face it, pirates don't give a shit about videos of other peoples' bullshit, such as animal videos and personal rants and the like. They want the good stuff, movies and music, and it's ALL copyrighted.
That means, if the industry wants change, they have to go after EVERYONE.

just stop using the isp's that will enforce this and watch how fast they will change their minds

For decades, people have been making copies of copyrighted material, ever since recording has been possible. There was no way to track individuals who made a reel to reel, cassette, or 8 Track recording. Copying music off of the radio was not traceable either. What about all the money the industry was losing then? Not a friggin peep about that. Now they are "going to do something about it". If piracy really did the damage that they claim it did, pirates would have been shut down at the advent of the digital age. The fact that we have had the ability to download material for so long without laws like these means that we have been set up to fall. "Let them download shit for a few years, then we'll nail their asses."

Fuck AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner, or Verizon, and I don't use them.

People shouldn't use one of the big guys as their ISP unless necessary. Same with phones.

The whole thing is bullshit. The entertainment industry has outmoded business models.

My daughters friend, just received a letter from the local PD, which states her IP has been traced to the named peer to peer sharing website, and if she continued, she would be fined for illegal downloading.

That didn't work with Telstra. They still "voluntarily" block some sites even though apparently loads of people cancelled business with them. They're just too big to care and there are enough sheep out there for them to fleece.

What about streaming?

They will never stop it, period.

People will just get discs from Redbox for $1 and make copies and return the disc or use a VPN.

The STUPID will receive notices the rest I am sure will continue to do what they do.

name your file something other than what it is. reuploaders add a text file or pic to the archive to change it's checksum.

This will never either a. never actually happen or b.never work.
ISP's will be making fraudulent statements to their customers by interrupting a service they pay to use, giving them false legal advice that downloading a torrent for personal use is illegal when it is not.
And also then sending them unsolicited emails telling them to buy things.
They will get sued and lose so many customers so quickly they will abandon the whole thing within a week.

Nah its like this, the copyright trolls get the torrent and start downloading it themselves.
Then they get a list of IP addresses on the torrent and send requests to the ISP saying these people have infringed on us.
Then the ISP interrupts the customers service that they are paying for based on this petty irrelevant allegation.
And gives them fake legal advice(which is illegal) that downloading copied movies for personal use is a crime(when it is not).
And then spams them with ads on websites to buy things.
You see what a giant fail this is?

this is what we get for allowing cable and cell phone companies to monopolize our internet service.

we get... slow speeds, high prices, and censorship.

comcast sent me several warnings, about 3 years ago.. none since - even though my behaviour has remained unchanged.


every single specific warning was for apple software - though not all published by the same company. (IE, some was adobe, some was microsoft, some was apple, but all mac)

I got a warning about a month or so ago from my isp provider due to my son and his downloading stuff...apparently copyrighted stuff??? But needless to say he stopped.

There's no point in having a fast connection if you can't download enough crap to pay for it. Let them eat that.

More and better encryption - not that much actually, and they'll be left without a target. VPN helps a lot - they've no idea what you're doing if you do it right, and you have the right to use any protocol you wish.

Just say no to power tripping assholes.

With torrents you are uploading to your peers, so you are a distributor of copyrighted material, so you kinda fail.
