Some of these people work week to week and, literally, eat week to week. There is nothing extra. Period. Only those on this forum that know, or have at some point known, that kind of poor will understand.

I totally agree. The comments from some people demonstrate that they are unaware of a recession that has dragged on for what - 4 years? - now. So many people are unemployed or under employed. Yet they are taxed to the gills on every penny they are fortunate enough to earn.

The local Salvation Army has a soup kitchen which serves a hot dinner every weekday night and gives out meal boxes for the weekend. Most of the people are working poor, my daughter tells me. She has volunteered there many times, and knows.

Is it so different other places? I think not.

Some people have trouble setting aside enough food for tomorrow.

If you have ever been living by the grace of God, you will know what I mean.

If you have always had a good job and generous parents, you won't, unless the bottom falls out on you too someday.

Kindness and tolerance go a long way, and bring unseen rewards. Unkindness and quick criticism bring problems and bad days and nights.

I doubt many "preppers" tap into their supply. They know how to ROTATE their stocks and keep them the same! It isn't rocket science like someone has pointed out. It is merely "one can of beans that is due to expire eaten and then another can of beans with later expiration date purchased".

Look it up. Their is plenty instruction on how to stock and rotate. It isn't difficult if you are not a Lazy Ass figuring someone else will give you handouts.

I bet those people bitching about no food or water or means to keep stocked up always have plenty of cigarettes and booze stocked in their houses.

The "elite" politicians are not here to help people in any way, hope it's clear.

Is the disaster just so large that we can't get food there? I assume people are thinking out of the box, and this is the US w/ the largest military in the world....?

On a level it's a drill for everyone of us, start to prep and buy the necessary thingies. (Heinz beans, lol, vitamins, arms, water, cheap tent, katana sword for stylish self-defence, medical kit, clothes, fire making kit, Bear Gryll knive, lol)

This is just another example of Obama making promises on which he can't deliver.

I hope things are done before Wednesday night when the second storm rolls in. Otherwise people are going to suffer needlessly.

The pictures of people dumpster diving three days after the storm--you can survive for three days on a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter. Seems like some didn't prep at all.

Let me tell 'ya.. If I were unable to work for a week, had no power, no water and was receiving no aid, I'd be flipping the fuck out and demanding some sort of assistance..

Some people loot for greed, others loot for survival..

Unfortunately, not everyone can afford to stock up on food and be prepared - which is why those people need to understand how critical it is that they have something, even if it's just cans of beans..

At some point, people should have to take responsibility for themselves.
If a person doesn't suffer illness or disability, they shouldn't need to depend on others in a crisis.

Storms happen all over the planet, all the time.. not a new thing.
The emergency services should be reserved for those who truly are in need because of infirmity or

No shit..I have lived on 20 dollars a week for groceries for me and 2 kids..cause I worked I didnt qualify for food stamps..and we went 9 days without electric due to an ice storm..noone came around passing out food or heat etc...We made due and survived. I think these folks are so used to being dependent on the government that they cant survive a small storm. I dont have a lot of sympathy if they did not prepare.

Even the homes that were not wiped out could have been contaminated by the flooding of sewage. All that food and water would then not be safe for consumption.

I raised three kids as a musician.. money was scarce for most of that time.
When my youngest was an infant we got slammed by an icestorm. Also had a 1-year old and a 5-year old..
Eight days in the country with no power, water, telephone or help.
Coleman stove. Cooking. Heat water for formula.. Kerosene lanterns..
Blocked off the living room with a blanket.. heated with the wood stove. 80 gallons of water in the water heater.
Food in the pantry..

Fema didn't show..We survived.

Except the people in high rises don't have any food either.

Imagine a Staten Island effect occuring in every major and minor city across the US as a result of some exogenous shock.

If the government can't even get a few bottles of water to residents in one small island in NYC with all their billions and billions in resources, there is no way, no fucking way, a crisis on a larger scale will ever be fixed.

This is just a taste of what is coming our way.

This is probably closer to the truth than one would expect. The biggest clue that you are dealing with a bureacracy is the "need" to fill out a mind-numbing number of forms, which are then collated, time-stamped, filed, and ultimately forgotten.

One of the TV networks was going on about how FEMA was there helping, and all you saw was a tent-building filled with weary people filling out forms.

Maybe they are hoping that the people will get fed-up and discouraged and just go away. "Obviously didn't need OUR help!"

These people need to come together as a community, why not approach Bloomberg and say thanks for coming out first of all, then be understanding not demanding in the concerns for the community. Ask questions, show respect, but NO you yell, cuss and act like a bunch of idiots. He wouldnt even be there if he wasnt attempting to show concern. Saying you have no water or food but the last guy who was screaming at Bloomburg is smoking a cigarette. So you have no food or water left in your homes but you damn sure got your smokes. I agree with some of the posts on this thread. I live along the area where Sandy was to hit and made sure I had enough supplies to care for my family. So no, I do not understand why these people have nothing. Beans, rice, peanut butter and jelly, crackers, canned goods, etc. ga long way and there IS such a thing as Self-Sufficency! I agree with posts on here that talk about having children, power out, snowed in, etc and making it without help. I lived through that a few times myself, blizzards, 80's, 90's,snow-mageddon, Isabel, and a few other storms and hurricanes that knocked out access to supplies and energy. I ALWAYS got enough supplies to take care of my family! Dollar store stuff can go a Long way when you don't have alot of money!

How about community meetings for preparing for disasters? What about the elderly? Aren'tthere care-giver services where they lived? Some of the places were retirement homes-didn't they think to prepare?

Now I will discuss the gov's part in this WTF weren't they prepared? Since they had advanced notice and stated that this was going to be a big, bad storm nearly a week before it came! WHERE were the standing by supplies like drinking water and Red-Cross meal trucks?

It is obvious that people need to wake up to the reality of the situation we call life. It is our Personal Responsibility to care for our families! If you have children it is your JOB as their parents to make sure you can feed them! I do not want to hear this BS about being poor! WTF makes you think that people who post on here are rich? Most of us are in the same boat. Hindsight is 20-20 isn't it. Use this as a learning example-of what NOT to do in a storm! Of what TO do to prepare for a storm. Or for any kind of disaster for that matter!

As far as the posters who say "well you live in those areas it's your fault". You could not be more wrong about that. If you have lived in an area for 20 plus years, your parents and grandparents, etc have lived in and around the same area and NOTHING like this has ever happend in any of their lifetimes how are you to know that something like this could happen? And then there are those of us who not by choice live in areas that "could" by hit by disaster. Financially we are "stuck". Are you going to give us the money to move to an area tha may be safe in the future?

We are ALL doing the best we can do! We are All doing what we know to do. If you were never taught to be self-reliant, how do you know what that means? If you never grew up in a depression or recession how do you know how to survive in one? If storms of this magnitute have never happened in your area before, how do you kow how to prepare for one?

For the people living in these areas now. You must form groups. A group to go for fuel, a group for food, a group to care for the children and elderly. Some of you must have relatives that live in other non-affected areas. Meet them for supplies! HELP EACH OTHER! That is why we are alive in the first place!
