Great cars built to last. No frills, not pretty or comfortable really, just a solid work horse which is good enough for me. As a car guy and former Jeep technician, I'd recommend a 1992 XJ Cherokee. That was just about the best one ever made. 1992? That year was significantly better then later years? I appreciate any advice you can offer. Yeah sure. I found the 88-92 Xj almost completely trouble free. 90% of the ones from those years only ever came in for just routine maintenance. In 93 build quality went way down from where it was before. I think it had something to do with the rush to release the ZJ. I think XJ quality went back up during the Daimler-Benz years. XJ with a 4.0 liter engine is my suggestion. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 19442819 United States 11/27/2012 11:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Back in 99 I bought the wife a new Grad Cherokee Laredo, at 14000k miles the rotors had to be turned. At 25000 miles (2002) I had to install new rotors, 3 years/piad out of pocket. Again with 41200 miles again new rotors. At 45000 miles the main bearing in the read shattered, they had no explanation as to why? Less than 1000 miles later the engine cooling fan (again bearings) unit had to be replaced. In 4.5 years that she had the piece of junk, I spent over $2300.00 for items that should not have wore out. Then after trading the piece of junk in, 8 months later Jeep announced a recall for the brakes. I contacted the dealer (bought and maintenance) to request copies of all work they had done, I wanted to reimbursed for the monies I spent on the brakes. As I was told, they purge all information once the vehicle is resold. Was screwed out of $1300 dollars. In 1996 I bought the wife a new Grand Am, less than 600 miles the tranny internals shattered. Told they never seen anything like it, then traded it in for the jeep, again nothing but crap. So in 2004 purchased a 4 Runner, best decision vehicle wise I ever made. Still have it and plan to. |

Quoting: Minnie Kitty i just bought my first ford it's a fine vehicle. i'm liking it ... but it's taking some time getting used to the 6 cyl ... my last suv had a 360, lots of power but boy did it suck gas. i'd definately buy another ford I agree Ford makes a good ride. My stang has 330 HP that gets 29 mpg and not one issue in 100K miles The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help. |
Sledster User ID: 982167 Germany 11/27/2012 11:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | LOL.....yea it's true. I could buy a more gas efficient small SUV like a KIA or something like that, but my husband says they are junk and to stick with the older model jeeps. Quoting: Lisa*Lisa good advice Diesel Cherokee (and others?) are coming in 2014... [link to www.greencarreports.com] The 3.0-liter, turbocharged diesel develops 241 horsepower and 406 pounds-feet of torque, and in its current application is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. An eight-speed auto is rumored, but it's unclear whether the diesel will use this transmission. The EcoDiesel engine should allow the Grand Cherokee to achieve up to 33 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg city, with the five-speed. These have been available in Europe for years now. About time they bacame available in the states. I'm tired of waiting, somebody push the damn button already! Keep your 72 virgins, give me one old biker chick. |
DILKe User ID: 28531494 United States 11/27/2012 11:14 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The 1999 Trans Am that carries me into Ankh Morpork and back to the estate each day has over 300,000 miles on the original LS1 and T56 transmission. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 280454 The Royal Mechanic has informed me that besides the routine oil and filter changes, serpentine belt replacements, air filter cleanings, tire replacements, etc., the following events have occurred since the vehicle's purchase: Replaced spark plugs at 100,000. Replaced struts and shocks are 145,000. Replaced clutch and pressure plate at 165,000. Replaced windshield at 170,000.(excessive stone chips) Rebuilt rear differential at 175,000.(wheel bearings, pinion bearing, carrier bearings, new pinion and drive gear) Replaced spark plugs again at 200,000. Repainted vehicle at 210,000. Replaced one broken beehive valvespring at 240,000. Replaced windshield at 280,000. (more stone chips) Replaced stock struts and shocks with Bilstein equipment at 285,000. Replaced the starter at 288,000. Replaced rack & pinion, power steering pump and all hydraulic lines at 295,000. The vehicle was paid off in 2004. It does not burn oil to this day, and tests show high and nearly equal compression at all 8 cylinders. I would have to say that the cost of maintenance and upkeep has been worth the effort over buying a new vehicle. For what its worth, a new GM LS6 crate engine is in storage in the royal garage awaiting the eventuality of the LS1 being retired permanently. GM computer controlled LS1 and downstream LSx engines are worthy of serious kudos to the GM engineers of that era. Mayhap they've all retired, and less capable men are now trying to fill their shoes? I dont think anyone is doubting the LSx motor. It's pretty stout and can take some serious power adders with ease. I'm happy with my lifted '02 Jeep WJ with 4.7 V8 and the NV247 transfer case with front and rear limited slip. Plenty of power with a smooth ride and the solid front and rear axles are beefy. Poker User ID: 19967212 United States 11/27/2012 06:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Actually, an engine's oil will burn either White or Blue depending on the problem. White smoke at start-up and (sometimes) during idle, is the sign of leaky Valve-Stems. Leaky Vale-Steams are common among Chevy vehicles. Incorrect. Oil combusts the same every time. Sure, it'll burn "white" if coolant is introduced to the mix. Are you that Fucking Stupid? Read it again: "Actually, an engine's oil will burn either White or Blue depending on the (Engine's) problem." Coolant mixing with Oil is an engine problem dumb ass. You literally 'corrected' me by saying the same damn thing I did. |
