Yes, Christianity was FORCED onto most nations, so what people did was simply change the name of pagan celebrations into christian ones. That's all there is to it. I'm not sure about USA, but in my country the pagan traditions are so obvious it's almost ironic people consider themselves Christians. On the other hand, what exactly are christian traditions? Now that I think about it, I'm not even sure they have any.

We know Jesus was born in the Spring because the Shepards were sleeping in the field which they only did during the time the Sheep were lambing.

My Dad always said that Jesus was born in early Spring. I don't know why he believed that, but he was a very intelligent man. I'm guessing he had done alot of research on it.

Pope Benedict is not seeking to change any dates, or the nature of traditional Christmas.

OP -- this is hardly news. There's a wonderful youtube video about the Star of Bethlehem that dates Jesus' birth according to astronomical features and provides very compelling evidence.

However, knowing the exact date of Jesus' birth is really not necessary; what IS necessary is knowing Jesus, and following him.
