My grand daughter has laptop and a I pad. She is in 2nd grade and going into 5th grade math. My other grandchildren do too. My sons all had computers they are now grown excelled in their grades went to college and are happy well rounded guys. If parents aren't involved in their children lives they are going to do whatever, with or without laptops.

"With an eye made quiet by the power of harmony and the deep power of joy, we see into the life of things." William Wordsworth

And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe—the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.

John F. Kennedy Inaugural Address

Lincoln's economic advisor Henry C. Carey explained the universal issue in his 1851 Harmony of Interests:

"Two systems are before the world.... One looks to pauperism, ignorance, depopulation, and barbarism; the other to increasing wealth, comfort, intelligence, combination of action, and civilization. One looks towards universal war; the other towards universal peace. One is the English system; the other ... the American system, for ... elevating while equalizing the condition of man throughout the world."

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." - Albert Einstein

I've lived here all my life, can't wait for the re-boot. lib-tards have utterly trashed this state.

My conservative votes only go so far, that isn't even doing anything.

I really don't have a problem with this. Do people realize how much these book companies charge for books?

Colleges charge students $200+ for books that are slightly altered every year so they can charge for a "new edition".

Hopefully everything will be easily accessed online pretty soon for school without a company deciding to charge ridiculous amounts for it.

Re: State of California school system gets rid of books
buy your children books

encourage them to read

in many states many classes are now mandatory to take that class on line there is no more class room teacher

save a teachers job!

kids can figure out how to cheat on line too for these classes..

its very important for parents to be involved with the children do not depend on the system

if they are are in your belly READ to them
if they are little read a book to them every night before bed
 Quoting: SeaPunk

I agree. I think the best way to encourage your children to read, is to yourselves read tales to them when they are little children.

Education is ridiculous anyway you slice it. Math is math and always will be, if it's in a book or on the web, it never changes. Art, which doesn't exist really in schools anymore, helps to form alternative views and ideas of life. History, changes depending on who won the most recent war. And Grammatical English no longer exists. Short hand texting has taken over in young kids vocabulary. And the ability to proof read your own posts has obviously disappeared, as represented on this very website, and thread.

Philosophy, which is "the love of thought" and the actions of learning how to think, is barely even a major in most colleges and universities. Instead Sales, Marketing, and Management are taking over. How to manipulate your fellow man in other words. It F-ing sucks.

:0612043::7491t9: I do. Behind all the fancy words is the fact that NWO cattle don't need a vocabulary of more than 600 words, and very basic maths. That's the price you pay when you sit their in silence and allow prayer and proper religious education to be taken out of the school system.
 Quoting: Judethz

This has ZERO to do with religion and prayer.

If anything, those are a detriment to the educational system.

You're reinforcing archaic forms of thinking by pushing religion.

Atheism is the evolution of mankind in regard to philosophy and our spiritual outlook on the Universe.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27809228

Atheism is just one particular way of viewing the universe which happened to gain predominance in modern civilization over the last few centuries.

Until not that long ago, those who were very educated were mainly religious people. They were also the most educated. You don't have to "push religion" to acknowledge this.

Don't forget: those who actually founded the new world civilization, the Pilgrim Fathers, were VERY religious people, and they were very well educated.

I am astonished anyone should focus on the price of books to make an argument.

Do you only realize how much money companies active in the computer, IT, and internet business are making ? And on top of that there is a huge marketing industry which has grafted itself upon it - which didn't work very well with school manuals, as we all know.

Re: State of California school system gets rid of books
ALL started back in the late 1960s, when federal government, via Department of Education got involved with 'Free Money' to those schools THEY deemed were teaching what THEY wanted ! With the 'grants'/BRIBES they were handing out, many cities including Danbury, CT took the bate, as the school board ( political wing of Democrats in power ) saw a way to hold down tax increases for education in their communities, while OTHER ones paid the bill !

Once the fed had a stranglehold on the city, they became more and more involved in what was taught and HOW ! Like a drug pusher gives out free samples to initiate a new customer, THEN ups the ante.

Of course the state was next to fall in line with interference .... new rules, new strategies IMPOSED, with politicians HAPPY to follow along.

I know because I WAS PART of that change over, even to the point where an assistant principle told me to dumb down my Introduction to Physical Science class, so dumber students could fit in and NOT fail ! Fought it and they eventually forced me out with continuous hounding/threats and unfounded charges !

Hey Eagle we have something in common. Both of us have first hand knowledge of what and how it has taken place. I disagree on the early part of your analysis. The Fed was pretty limited in its incursions. Limited to Math/Science/Special Ed as I recall. From my perspective it has been mainly the States that have sanctioned the majority of this bullshit. Here in MI the State took control with the funds all paid to the State who then doled them out supposedly on a more equal basis (wealthy vs poorer) Districts. The State had already instituted a statewide Test which it would then use to control CURRCULUM. Since this time it has been all downhill with the patients in charge of the asylum.

get your children out of the state run schools!!!

by the way, even though I am a linear thinking math teacher, I have now opted to unschool my children

my kids do a variety of things to learn but nothing like a school (although they do math and reading every day but they enjoy this and drive it forward)

right now, we are opening a business together (a big one--not a kid business)

They will be involved in every single step---up to and including running the business for themselves.

That is how you get an education. You don't sit in a classroom listening to a teacher drone on---you roll up your sleeves and YOU DO IT!

I think that's the point! They want the population Further dumbed down, and are now declaring war on books! Also, want children exposed to MORE EMF from computers and wifi so that they can have learning problems and physical ill health (like leukemia.)

My daughter is doing a naturopathy course via correspondence and has just been told the text books are to no longer be available. Everything is to be online - and it is called 'smart learning' - because they don't want to leave a carbon footprint - but are more than happy to subject people to harmful radiation in a maximum way.

Sadly very true. They don't teach kids how to think critically, just how to do stuff. Or how to do stuff to others.

^THIS^ We are in Western North Carolina and since my son started 6th grade this year, he does not bring home any books for homework, only copies of pages. I asked him why and he says they don't have any books. This amazed me so when I went to my sons 6th grade "open house" and asked his teachers if I could look through any books she was using to teach my child, she acted offended that I would even question what he was taught and proudly said that they had moved beyond books in the classroom and were using a newly revised teaching method. When I asked her how, as a parent, we can know what our child is being taught this way, she said with a wink...."You'll just have to trust us." I SO wish I could afford to send my children to a private school or homeschool them myself but our state makes both impossible to afford! gaah
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29507391

You cannot afford NOT to get your child out of public schools.
Mine were in the public school system several decades ago, and it's the biggest mistake of my life. Far worse now.
If I could live my life over, the one thing I would change would be to keep my kids out of the public school system!
Still living with the damage!

Same here. I consider it my biggest life mistake, should have homeschooled them.

BRIEF, hon, what in the world????

Anyway, back to the subject at hand. I think it's a shame that schools are moving onto laptops and ebook readers to teach the kids. I heard in Cincinnatti, they gave all their kids an ebook reader. What's going to happen when we do get hit with a CME from our lovely sun?

If we no longer print books and we have a worldwide power outage, we are going to lose all of that information...We will really go back to the Stone Age if that happens...

Scares the hell out of me.

Re: State of California school system gets rid of books
According to vocabulary tests, Californian fourth grade and eighth grade students are almost at the bottom of the list, excepting just a very few other states; and this, despite heavy injections of vast sums of money.

So they found a solution !

"The test, known as the Nation’s Report Card, also showed that California is doing worse than states spending less on education.

So much for lack of money being a problem.

Then there was the school-board meeting I attended where there was a complete computer presentation of a new method of teaching that is now being implemented in the schools.

I had no idea what they were talking about.

They explained classes would be reconfigured, curriculum content was being revised, teachers are being retrained on how to teach and what to teach, how every student would have a laptop, books were to be virtually phased out – but some new books would be created for this whole new education system.

We were told it would take a couple of years to get everything in place, but by the time that happens, it would be in every school and every grade in California."

So books and outdated teaching methods are being blamed.

Are they sure a certain change of mentality in pupils and parents didn't play a part in it ?

And pres. Obama, according to the article, seems to be mighty proud of this "accomplishment."

For example: Lower case "I" when referring to yourself? Really?

Another: "My grand daughter has laptop and a I pad."

Correct writing would be: My granddaughter has a laptop and an iPad.

Otherwise, I thought you meant that your pad was on your thousand dollar daughter's lap. She maybe at a 5th grade math level, but your English is at preschool.

Anyway, what is the difference between 2nd and 5th grade math? Adding three-digit numbers instead of two-digit? If she was completing complex matrix arithmetic using imaginary numbers, like i-squared, that would be something.
