State of California school system gets rid of books

Wont work, give out those laptops with no books, kids will just surf porn, play games or use Facebook...

My grand daughter has laptop and a I pad. She is in 2nd grade and going into 5th grade math. My other grandchildren do too. My sons all had computers they are now grown excelled in their grades went to college and are happy well rounded guys. If parents aren't involved in their children lives they are going to do whatever, with or without laptops.

encourage them to read

in many states many classes are now mandatory to take that class on line there is no more class room teacher

save a teachers job!

kids can figure out how to cheat on line too for these classes..

its very important for parents to be involved with the children do not depend on the system

if they are are in your belly READ to them
if they are little read a book to them every night before bed

This has ZERO to do with religion and prayer.

If anything, those are a detriment to the educational system.

Education is ridiculous anyway you slice it. Math is math and always will be, if it's in a book or on the web, it never changes. Art, which doesn't exist really in schools anymore, helps to form alternative views and ideas of life. History, changes depending on who won the most recent war. And Grammatical English no longer exists. Short hand texting has taken over in young kids vocabulary. And the ability to proof read your own posts has obviously disappeared, as represented on this very website, and thread.

Philosophy, which is "the love of thought" and the actions of learning how to think, is barely even a major in most colleges and universities. Instead Sales, Marketing, and Management are taking over. How to manipulate your fellow man in other words. It F-ing sucks.

Colleges charge students $200+ for books that are slightly altered every year so they can charge for a "new edition".

Hopefully everything will be easily accessed online pretty soon for school without a company deciding to charge ridiculous amounts for it.

Hey Eagle we have something in common. Both of us have first hand knowledge of what and how it has taken place. I disagree on the early part of your analysis. The Fed was pretty limited in its incursions. Limited to Math/Science/Special Ed as I recall. From my perspective it has been mainly the States that have sanctioned the majority of this bullshit. Here in MI the State took control with the funds all paid to the State who then doled them out supposedly on a more equal basis (wealthy vs poorer) Districts. The State had already instituted a statewide Test which it would then use to control CURRCULUM. Since this time it has been all downhill with the patients in charge of the asylum.

Everything is to be online - and it is called 'smart learning' - because they don't want to leave a carbon footprint - but are more than happy to subject people to harmful radiation in a maximum way.

You cannot afford NOT to get your child out of public schools.
Mine were in the public school system several decades ago, and it's the biggest mistake of my life. Far worse now.
If I could live my life over, the one thing I would change would be to keep my kids out of the public school system!

After a number of hours on the computer without a break, My eyes are shot, and I feel weak and drained from the glare and radiation. It takes a few days to feel my strength come back after a long stint online

I feel sorry for these kids. This radiation and wifi will burn them out and get them fatigued at such a young age.

If you have no foundation, you're doomed to fail. These kids lack fundamental skills like reading, penmanship, grammar, and arithmetic.

We were told it would take a couple of years to get everything in place, but by the time that happens, it would be in every school and every grade in California."

So books and outdated teaching methods are being blamed.

Are they sure a certain change of mentality in pupils and parents didn't play a part in it ?

And pres. Obama, according to the article, seems to be mighty proud of this "accomplishment."

by the way, even though I am a linear thinking math teacher, I have now opted to unschool my children

my kids do a variety of things to learn but nothing like a school (although they do math and reading every day but they enjoy this and drive it forward)

right now, we are opening a business together (a big one--not a kid business)


They will be involved in every single step---up to and including running the business for themselves.

That is how you get an education. You don't sit in a classroom listening to a teacher drone on---you roll up your sleeves and YOU DO IT!

Correct writing would be: My granddaughter has a laptop and an iPad.

Otherwise, I thought you meant that your pad was on your thousand dollar daughter's lap. She maybe at a 5th grade math level, but your English is at preschool.

Anyway, what is the difference between 2nd and 5th grade math? Adding three-digit numbers instead of two-digit? If she was completing complex matrix arithmetic using imaginary numbers, like i-squared, that would be something.
