That could be a lot of different things... did it stop suddenly after the "5 seconds"??

Yes, it did not even struggle to stay started when it stopped. It just stopped immediately.

Are you getting fuel, or spark? When you try starting it, have someone look down the throttle (wear safety glasses in case it backfires out the intake) and see if you see fuel being sprayed in. If this is fuel injection, pull a plug and smell for raw fuel. Once you establish you are getting fuel, check to see if you are getting a spark. Pull one of the plug wires and stick a screw driver into the end, and (WHILE HOLDING THE INSULATED PART - DON'T TOUCH THE METAL OF THE SCREW DRIVER OR YOU WILL GET SHOCKED!!) touch the metal shank of the screw driver to a metal part of your car (basically keep a small air gap between the screw driver shank and the metal of your engine to see a spark). If no spark chances are your coil or pickup in the dizzy went bad. You can measure the voltage to the coil to see if you are getting anything... post back... for further instructions.

Turn the ignition on (just before cranking) and listen for the fuel pump.

It should make a buzzing sound from the tank for 3 seconds every time you turn it from off to on (just before crank)

Though that is general, if the vehicle is FI it requires a set amount of pressure. The pump could be engaging but weak... I would probably start first with the ignition and see if he has spark first. Chances are the coil shit out. Usually happens in cold weather...

The problem is with your battery.

Your battery needs a new car.

Okay thanks for the real advice by the way I am not a woman I'm just not a car guy (IT guy). I just can't buy anything yet until I get paid in the next couple days.

DID YOU TEST IT? Before you go throwing money at something you don't understand, did you take the advice and troubleshoot it??? Are you getting fuel? Are you getting a spark?

Spray gas/starting fluid into carb/throttle body, start, if it doesnt even kick, you have no spark.

Check and make sure security systems are setting it off either.

You should hear the fuel pump run as well just by turning key on, but not cranking engine.

It's not a sebring is it? if so, check start/fuel pump fuse, they put those 2 circuits on same fuse like dumbasses, had one do that to me a few months back.

Type in the year make and model of your car + forums and search from there

You need to take it to the shop and have the Muffler Bearings re-greased. (sorry, had to join the fun!)
