You are actually alot safer now than you were then. You just hear about it more now because of the boob toob and communication. Hell, I live in a city with a metro area of 4.5 million and i leave my truck unlocked all the time, windows down going into the grocery store. Nothing ever happens.

Very true. Being called a momma's boy was the worst thing imagineable. If you were called that among the guys, it was something awful. Likely a fight would break out, for you had something to prove, and somebody would end up with a "shiner".

My gosh, I could do 40 pushups by age 12, and would knock em out without breathing hard. I'd love to see most 12 year old do that now.

Good for you...we have to all learn to be responsible for how our children are being brought up...at home at least. It is hard to control what happens in our schools.

You know, those kids are barefoot because shoes were for church and school or the family couldn't afford them.

Of course they were. We had retirees from Hollywood in my little town. One was gay and had been a set and costume designer. Everyone knew he was "funny" but they didn't say it in a mean way. Single guys in their 70s who never married and faithfully came to church, and people knew but they still were respected.

I'm pretty certain that someone living in 1895 could not make the current used tests either (mainly due to changes in what is considered important and what terms are used, srsly knowing what a bushel of wheat is or how many fit in a cart aren't really that relevant anymore).

And no the quality of that test isn't particularly high, for example the math tests here in the Netherlands are actually harder then what is mentioned in your test (practice test for a CITO exam that every kid needs to in 8th grade here in Holland);

They were barefoot because the parents, if they had any, could not afford shoes for them. That why they had coblers, people could only get their old scrappy shoes fixed, a new bottom put on, not a new pair. The life expectancy was lower because of war. Every decade the dads were made to go off to some other place by some other idiot and start killing the dads over there so some guys who lived in fancy buildings could get his hands on the gold, resources and the women over there.

Many women went to work and taught their daughters to have a career so they would "have something to fall back on" and a way to protect their own children from poverty in case their husband turned out to be no good lying cheating two faced perv hypocrite scum.

Rich or poor, what makes a good childhood is a good and Godly father who is true to the Bible. If the father is good, stays faithful to the mom then all is well for the kids, regardless of housing, food, clothing - the kids learn love and love is all that matters, love and faithfulness to God and to marriage and to the family. Shoes or no shoes, xbox or what ever. The kids have dead empty sad looks in their eyes when the father is unfaithful to the mom, and the kids know it, they are not blind.

You sure have a demented view of Americans. Most ethnic people from places like Italy maintained their culture in rural Kentucky. Why wouldn't they?

Nuclear rain? Possibly. Not too many scrounging in garbage cans in the country. Why not move to a rural place?

Oh yeah! Hot sand, my feet were impervious by July. I hated having to wear shoes again though, felt like my poor little feet were being held prisoner :) I once went an entire summer with a fairly large piece of glass in my foot. My father insisted on taking it out the week before school. The skin had grown over it, that was NOT fun.

Yep, me too. I stepped on the broken shards of a bottle and it went through my tennis shoe. I picked out glass for years as it worked it way out of my foot. My dad bought me hiking boots because they were tough, and I felt nerdy wearing them,clumping along in the school hallways, not knowing that they were great for walking in the woods. Nobody had them in my neck of the woods, except maybe some hunters. They sure came in handy on the farm and while exploring the forest.

While i too love to remember the good old days. The fact is things weren't that great. Not to mention, those are pictures when someone broke out a camera and more so 'back then' you fucking put a smile on your face when a camera appeared. People tend to not take pictures when things are going back especially years back then.

And if you had it so perfect how did you manage to fuck it up so badly for your children? Or do you want to talk about how the younger generation won't take responsibility while simultaneously not take responsibility for raising complete fuck-ups?

Those kids for the most part look much more middle class than poor. They are just poor from our modern materialistic perspective.

And I grew up on a farm, in the 80's and 90's, and I didn't get to wear shoes except to go to school or town either. This still exists in a lot of the country.

But only in the parts that have not yet been corrupted!
