if it hits anything at all, it would probably be some satellite or two....

Wool then, Big Man! Answer or respond to every single opinion and question Son of PC posed to you that led you to rudely say he doesn't understand astronomy. Show us your stuff!
 Quoting: Kimpy2 20290901

Excuse me? You do not tell me what to do. It is not my job nor my desire to teach very basic astronomy to someone like that. You are in no position to tell me to respond to "every single opinion or question" of someone who doesn't understand hardly anything about astronomy. I have neither the time nor the desire to do that. I am highly inquisitive though, I do dig very deep when it comes to things like this asteroid's trajectory. That does not involve trying to fix someone else's fundamental misunderstandings. I may point out that they have those misunderstandings, but I am not here to get sidetracked on trying to fix that.
I'm suspicious that AstroDoggie wrote the above. Why? Fido-ian Slips like "I actually dig and dig and dig and do...."
"And then I take shit...."

 Quoting: Kimpy

I'm sorry, where's your calculation of this asteroid's orbit from astrometric data? Oh right, you haven't done any such calculations. Like I said, I'm one of the most inquiring minds on here, more so than you.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

Mathematically how much bigger or smaller would it have to be in mass to be pulled in by the earths gravity? or does it not work like that?
 Quoting: Keneh

Doesn't work like that. Earth's gravity will have the same effect regardless of how much mass the asteroid has. Mass of earth >>>>>>>>>>>> mass of an asteroid. The latter can therefore be disregarded. It's many orders of magnitude too small. If it were a significant fraction of the earth's mass or more massive than earth then it would become relevant to the calculations because it would noticeably pull earth towards itself, but the effect of earth's gravity on the asteroid would still not change.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

This might be a dumb question but I'll ask anway.

What about a magnetic pull? What if the asteroid is comprised of ferrous metals? Is there any chance it could pass through one of Earths magnetic field lines, one of opposing polarity, and get pulled in... or at least, alter it's course slightly?

agreed.. he seems to enjoy in engaging in flame wars which undermine his credibility. A real professional wouldn't care what someone had to say in terms of criticism and would just stay on topic so the message gets out there without all of the personal defensive chat.
 Quoting: Alexander

Maybe if people stopped attacking the messenger rather than the message (which they are utterly incapable off) he'd get a chance to do so.

Doc Astro has shown his data and his work, none of the fricking "we can't know anything" idiots has said anything that rebuts it.

Honestly the only people who seem to be sick of me are people whose opinions I couldn't give two flying shits about. It's not every day an asteroid comes this close to us, so I'm going to savor every last moment of it. I presented my analysis of its orbit, some people want to argue about it with me, so be it. I don't back down, but they chose to argue it with me.

I've also got something else cooking on the backburner which has been quite fun and educational to put together and is sure to piss those same people off even more when it's ready.

Now, why don't you let ME have MY fun and run along?

No.
Earth's magnetic field is pathetic.
It can catch charged particles, not rocks.

 Quoting: Halcyon Dayz, FCD

Thanks,

I'be been doing some reading on this.

[link to www.wisegeek.com]

"30-60 microteslas for the Earth's magnetic field may not sound like a lot, but when you take into account the total volume of the field, its total energy is extremely large, much larger than any magnetic field generated artificially."

"Magnetic pull? No *way.* Magnetic forces such as that decrease as 1/r^4, and even on earth they are barely enough to swing a compass"

I figure NASA scientists calculate the impact probability for many asteroids, taking in account all the unknowns they can think of (which includes all the things you and I could think off, and a lot more). However I also think they would keep the truth hidden, if one was expected to hit. Unless they could say exactly where it would hit.. then maybe they would tell us to evacuate. Especially for one what isn't "that big" on the grand scale of things.

So yeah, magnetic pull won't effect it anymore than possibly causing it to roll one way or the other..

Astro. Maybe if you didn't spend so much time trying to make monkey's asses out of people and looking like one yourself you could actually have a life.

I mean you must not have a wife or children because you spend all your free time on this site it seems.

Isn't there more to life for you than this place.

Maybe you have been coming here for too long. Your not very nice to people and it seems that everybody is sick to death of you.

If thats your dog go take it for a walk. Let it go. Let everybody have their fun. You made your point. Come back on Sunday and say I told you so.

Yea true. And narcissistic. Oh well, to each his own. Continue if you must, it'll be passed soon. You made it the grand non event it is. You could've just let these guys see for the self nothing was going to happen. Then again, only someone humble teaches with patience and understanding... You're nothing but ego and self-grandeur.

The truth hurts. It's funny, because you feed off bringing the honest "truth" to others, yet can not accept on a personal note some ugly truths have been shown by you, and constantly deny and skirt around any judgement on your character itself and how you have presented yourself throughout this.

FACTOR THIS, OH MIGHTY DR. OZ-TRO! Precisely what Son of PC and I were asking: i.e., electromagnetic exchange between two highly charged homopolar motors known as Earth and a sizable asteroid. Sorry to "rock" your world!! Heeheehee snort snort!

Feb. 14, 2013: "New research by Richard Binzel, a professor of planetary science at MIT, suggests that many near-Earth asteroids experience a seismic jolt when they pass too close to our planet’s gravitational field.
"We are going to be looking closely for evidence of seismic activity on 2014 DA14 as it passes by," says Binzel. "This is the first case of an object coming close enough to experience quakes AND where we have enough notice to plan observations."

Astro versus Dunham: we will find out tomorrow; I just wish there was a good reason to believe either of you.

Oh well, it is not really important either way. I mean, its not like NASA would tell us if it was going to hit or that we could do anything about it anyway.

Cheers!

Again, I didn't ask NASA, I did the calculations myself from amateur data. It is entirely possible to know which one of us are right even before tomorrow.

Actually I presented an analysis of the asteroid's orbit and why I know it won't hit. I do not see any such analysis coming from you, Dunham, or anyone else claiming it will hit us. Therefore my statements carry more weight because they're backed up by observational evidence. It's funny to watch you bounce between complaining about authority to demanding authority.

Says nothing about electromagnetic exchange. It's due to tidal forces upon the asteroid. Ever hear of this thing called the Roche limit?

DUDER! Ever heard of this thing called The Electric Universe? You are stuck like the geocentric Catholic Church when they locked the door to Galileo. You are motivating totally from a purely mechanical model! Open your mind, sir. A least entertain a remote possibility that electromagnetism is a billion, billion, billion, billion, billion times more powerful a force in this universe than is gravity! www.holoscience.com. has taught me a lot. Let me ask you a personal question: When you orgasm, does it feel like an apple thudding to Earth? Or lightning? (It's a clue it'saclueit'saclue!)yoda
