BRIEF User ID: 381742 United States 02/11/2013 03:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yeah, a friend of mine takes a bottle of aspirin a day and tons of vitamin C to prevent stomach bleeding, but he has to be careful about cuts... I never forgive and I never forget I am a licensed firearm holder. I will, under protection of law, use lethal force if attacked. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 6713570 United States 02/11/2013 03:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My Grandma wasn't on blood thinners....but took half an aspirin every day for the arthritis. As is with old age...her gut got smalls holes in them that is usually an easy surgical repair...but they couldn't stop her bleeding because of her thinned blood due to the aspirin. Pharmacies....they're in it for the money...remember that. |

In the future, if this happens, spider webs can stop the bleeding, or hemo~stats if you hit an artery. Good Luck, and God Bless. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34143127 He doesn't listen to me very well. He had three heart attacks, two angioplasties done a few years back. His nutritionist is trying to wean him off his meds, but his doctor is a different story. He is a grown man.. |

You're supposed to have them for just such an event. Quoting: Just Some Dude He wasn't given anything in an event, just told to go to the hospital if it was bad. I believe he is on Coumadin. |

I'd let the doctor know how far he is from treatment and ask him to write a scrip for Vit K injectable, shouldn't be a problem, this is what we use in the hospital to stop bleeding on Coumadin patients. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 33779702 United States 02/11/2013 06:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Me being on coumadin and only in my early twenties, i've had to accept death during a possible SHTF scenario. At that point, it wouldn't be as easily accessible as it is today and without a proper way to track your INR thin/thickness levels, it's almost impossible to knowingly balance it between having a stroke from over clotting or bleeding to death from too thin of blood. I'm no chemist |

You're supposed to have them for just such an event. Quoting: Just Some Dude As a former nurse I can only laugh. No, or only a very few select laypersons has these antidotes on hand, or the expertise to use them.. . in an emergency no less. It is a known danger of anticoagulation. My father died after a closed bump not even to his head, that resulted in an impressive bleed in hours. nothing could stop it, surgery was done and he survived with deficits, died a few weeks later. He had been on coumadin for a very long time at that point, maybe 2 decades. We always worried. perhaps he lived longer with it than without, but I would not take anticoagulants myself. I wish there was a reliable, universally usable way to quickly reverse its effects. |

I'm no chemist Find out what you can now. At the very least, stock up on cans of vegetables rich in vitamin K. myself, I would really fear the effects of trauma, but you may be in a situation where you really do need the coumadin. Yes it is a difficult drug to track - my dad used to think of monitoring his levels as kind of a retirement job. I would never use a drug unless absolutely necessary - but if you need it, just learn what you can. A tourniquet may be handy. I had to elevate my dad's leg once for a long time. He had dropped a glass on the kitchen floor and a bit of glass cut him near the ankle. You are young - that is in your favor too! My dad was quite elderly when he died, and had other blood issues. Best of luck to you - and if you don't get the answers to your concerns from your doctor, find another one. There are many good ones out there. |
