People on Blood Thinners
Hi my fellow GLPers... I am not sure if you have family members who are on blood thinners, or maybe on them yourself?? But something came up recently that really bothered me and I thought I would share what I found, in case you may find it to come in handy.

Recently my step father, who is on blood thinners, cut him self with a saw, we were at the cottage, which is over an hour from the nearest hospital.. This wasn't a super deep laceration, but a decent one, that NORMALLY would have coagulated and stopped bleeding by a normal person. He was bleeding a SHIT load and it just would not stop. We tried everything we were supposed to and had to go to the hospital for them to stop the bleeding.

This got me thinking.. just for normal everyday accidents and also for when the SHTF, how can we help people with lacerations/injuries who may be on these meds? I don't know if anyone has heard of this product. I just found it browsing the internet today, so I don't know how new a product it is, but it is called CELOX? I ordered some to give to my step dad, since he is the handy type who will definitely hurt himself tinkering with things. I also however bought some for my first aid kit, as well as for the car kit. I don't know how good this stuff is, but the site caught my eye and I thought I would share.

All the best to you hf

Styptic pencils or better yet cornstarch. Maybe even flour. Here are some other ideas I found by doing a quick search just now because of seeing your thread.

We didn't have the styptic pencil, but did try cornstarch, sugar, elevation, pressure. It was very frustrating and scary.

Wean off all drugs, if you can. In the future, if this happens, spider webs can stop the bleeding, or hemo~stats if you hit an artery. Good Luck, and God Bless.

Yeah, a friend of mine takes a bottle of aspirin a day and tons of vitamin C to prevent stomach bleeding, but he has to be careful about cuts...

My Grandma wasn't on blood thinners....but took half an aspirin every day for the arthritis. As is with old age...her gut got smalls holes in them that is usually an easy surgical repair...but they couldn't stop her bleeding because of her thinned blood due to the aspirin.

Pharmacies....they're in it for the money...remember that.

He doesn't listen to me very well. He had three heart attacks, two angioplasties done a few years back. His nutritionist is trying to wean him off his meds, but his doctor is a different story. He is a grown man..

If he was on Coumadin, give a shot of Vitamin K, if he was on Heparin, protamine sulfate...why didn't he have the antidote to the blood thinner readily available? You're supposed to have them for just such an event.

He wasn't given anything in an event, just told to go to the hospital if it was bad. I believe he is on Coumadin.

I'd let the doctor know how far he is from treatment and ask him to write a scrip for Vit K injectable, shouldn't be a problem, this is what we use in the hospital to stop bleeding on Coumadin patients.

I always wash my cuts right away and hold the skin together for about 10 minutes while the cut area is still wet them I dab the area dry and put a band aid on it right away and it seems to seal itself.

Well when shtf, unless you get yourself chipped, there won't be any Coumadin or any other prescription meds for that matter, so blood should clot just fine!

Me being on coumadin and only in my early twenties, i've had to accept death during a possible SHTF scenario.

At that point, it wouldn't be as easily accessible as it is today and without a proper way to track your INR thin/thickness levels, it's almost impossible to knowingly balance it between having a stroke from over clotting or bleeding to death from too thin of blood.

OP, I looked at the link you provided and found it quite interesting. Sure wouldn't hurt to have that in any first-aid kit. Their ad says it stops even arterial bleeding.

Very interesting, thank you.

As a former nurse I can only laugh.

No, or only a very few select laypersons has these antidotes on hand, or the expertise to use them.. . in an emergency no less.

It is a known danger of anticoagulation.

My father died after a closed bump not even to his head, that resulted in an impressive bleed in hours.

nothing could stop it, surgery was done and he survived with deficits, died a few weeks later.

He had been on coumadin for a very long time at that point, maybe 2 decades.

We always worried.

perhaps he lived longer with it than without, but I would not take anticoagulants myself.

I wish there was a reliable, universally usable way to quickly reverse its effects.

Find out what you can now.
At the very least, stock up on cans of vegetables rich in vitamin K.

myself, I would really fear the effects of trauma, but you may be in a situation where you really do need the coumadin.

Yes it is a difficult drug to track - my dad used to think of monitoring his levels as kind of a retirement job.

I would never use a drug unless absolutely necessary - but if you need it, just learn what you can. A tourniquet may be handy. I had to elevate my dad's leg once for a long time. He had dropped a glass on the kitchen floor and a bit of glass cut him near the ankle.

You are young - that is in your favor too!

My dad was quite elderly when he died, and had other blood issues.

Best of luck to you - and if you don't get the answers to your concerns from your doctor, find another one. There are many good ones out there.
