In the past 20 minutes I've received 3 calls from different area codes... each time there is silence.

Called back all 3 and all 3 have said they did not call me...

I imagine its my friends fucking with me, but what better place to check to see if anyone else is getting things like this than here...

Well? Bueller? Bueller?

Silent calls

A lot of silent calls come from automatic dialing equipment in call centres, where more calls are made than there are operators available to handle them. To help stop these silent calls, you can register your number with the Telephone Preference Service.

It’s free to sign up and makes your phone number unavailable to companies that might try to call you. Once you’re signed up, you should only get marketing calls from companies you’ve allowed to contact you.

You can register with the Telephone Preference Service by signing up for BT Privacy at Home at www.bt.com/callingfeatures. This gives you free Caller Display, so you can see the number that’s calling before you answer.

If you think the silent calls are suspicious and are distressing you, please call our Nuisance Calls Advice Line on 0800 661 441.

Re: weird phone calls
Now and then, like 3 times a week I get calls that say 1-888 something. Finally gave up after 2 calls about 1 hour apart every night, about 8pm for like 3 days in a row. Turns out I asked them to remove me from there call list, it's the law I to reminded them. The calls have since stopped. So sometimes it's good to answer calls you know are telemarketers.

Re: weird phone calls
I had a similar incident. I got like three calls, all showing as a different out of state number. I didn't answer. My house phone rings and my Dad says why didn't you answer your cell phone?
I had him call my cell phone standing right next to me, sure enough it was showing again as a different out of state number. This time I answered it. Who is this? There was a woman on the other line, she said you know who this is and then just started laughing. You know who this is, she kept saying over and over again.
I was hoping for Morpheous. Any how, I got on here to see if others were having a similar problem. I'm speculating that it has something to do with the Comet.

Wow. A relative of mine received several calls over a few day period, a couple of months ago. The voice was automated and only said "goodbye". Most calls were 10 seconds long. The call came from Oregon...near Umatilla chemical depot. I understood it as a threatening message.

I get a few calls a day...very annoying. I have renewed my "do not call" information, but to no avail.

In the past 4 years, the calls have increased. That "do not call" list was once enforced by the government, but they don't care anymore.

The calls I receive are from various area codes. They once were identified on caller ID as "Out of Area," or 1-800 numbers, so I didn't pick up. Now, they come from my area code plus various other area codes.

When I answer, there is silence, but then a recorded message comes on, and they're giving me a discount on something. Today I was "chosen for"...probably lowering my credit card bills, but I hung up before I found out. My caller ID said it was from Florida.

The government promised to do something about it, and they did....but that was five years ago.

Re: weird phone calls
I got a call today from a 1 800 number that I had noticed calling me a couple times over the last few days. I tend to ignore calls unless they leave a voicemail and I think its something I actually need to address, so I didn't answer the first few times and they didn't leave a voicemail so I figured it was just a telemarketer. for whatever reason when it rang today I answered, and it was just dead on the line, but the call was still going. I said hello several times and gave them a minute but no one ever answered...the call just kept going silently.

maybe related? maybe just nothing.

either way, weird, I didn't know it was possible for phone calls to get all mixed up like that.

I don't think its your friends. I'e been having the same problem. Since yesterday I have recieved 4 calls. They hung up as soon as I answer. I tried to call it back and recieved an auto operator saying the number is not a working number. I googled the number and it appears a lot of people have been having this issue so I reported it. Most of this calls generate from West Virginia. I know nobody in West Virginia.

How can a number not be a working number when it called you? The number that called me 304-744-3087

Re: weird phone calls
Thread: I can't prove a damn word of this but it looks like my wife's cell phone was hacked by the US Government tonight and we are in Canada!

First my wife knows that I am a 'Truther' and she is skeptical.

We were out for our annual Valentines Day dinner when her cell phone (which is old school - a basic phone and text unit) It buzzes and she pulls it out and looks at it and goes "Oh my God it says US Government on it".

She shows it to me and the screen starts flashing and goes black but I did see US Government showing on the screen. I said your screen just went black to which she pressed the OK and on/off buttons and the screen came back but it was flashing and had a message that said 'my password=4831' with a bunch of gibberish but the US Government text was gone.

I asked if that was a password that meant anything to her and she said no. Then her phone's screen started half flashing half not, the screen photo split into two of the same, then the whole screen was pulsating weirdly then it crashed.

She yanked the battery waited for a couple of minutes then put it back in but the screen is still fucked up with the pulsing shit.

The other thing about this is we are in Canada and she works for the government and it was her work phone.

Strange fucking shit man!

My rule is don't answer the phone or door unless you are expecting it.
 Quoting: SPIRAL COBRA

I like how you think. If I don't recognize the name on my caller ID I don't answer the phone. No exceptions. And if I'm not expecting anyone at my door I don't answer.
 Quoting: truthwillsetyoufreeagain

Bad idea on the not answering the door. At very least, ask who it is. Lots of daytime home invasions happening here in So Cal. The MO? Knock on the door during the day, if no answer, go around back and kick a door in. This is happening quite a bit. There's been cases where women have been home alone and not answered the door. Needless to say.. These haven't ended well at all!
Just so you all know. Be safe. If you ask who it is, and you don't know them, don't worry about being rude and saying I'm not opening the door. What do you care if you offend a stranger. And this goes for people in uniform too. Utility workers, mail carriers etc. If they have something to say, they can say it through the door. If they need a signature, tell them to leave it on the door mat and step back. If they come at you, you have time to step back and slam the door.
There are a few sickos out there. Don't live in fear, but always be aware..
 Quoting: Gthree777

I actually have a device that stops people dead in their tracks when they decide to kick in my door.

its called a 12 gauge. I keep one near me at all times.

The 12 gauge is the ruler of home defense, I have my favorite hunting shotgun Mossberg 500 w/3" chamber, 24" slug barrel and 28" multi-choke vent-rib barrel, I've had this gun for 25 years and it has never jammed or mis-fed, I beleive it's the best for home and hunting.

Some call centres have systems that dial between 5 and 10 numbers in one run. The first to answer is the unlucky one who has to listen to the spiel.

The others just get hung up on, as the seller can only talk to one person. It is very rude.

They waste a lot of people's time.

Re: weird phone calls
Last summer I started getting random calls on my Virgin Mobile (Sprint network) phone from strangers (not telemarketers). Each was from a different number, mostly were local. Many were at early hours in the morning. A few left text messages or voicemail. Then they switched to mostly Spanish or Chinese speaking callers. I always let them go to voicemail and never called them back. They gradually stopped calling. No idea how they all got my number or if it was a glitch in the system.

Re: weird phone calls
OP is not lying. Same thing happened to me today around 5:45pm and lasted for about an hour. The same exact thing, random numbers calling me and when I would answer no one was there, and when I called them back they said they didn't call...it happened with both local and out of state calls. I was also told that people were trying to call me, but it wouldn't ring at all, and not even get my voicemail.

I live in Miami and have T-mobile btw.
 Quoting: Truth808

I too have T-Mobile. Something to do with the satellites.
 Quoting: MidWestLocated

I'm having this problem on t-mobile. I can't call out anywhere and I'm getting calls from strange numbers that I can't answer. Also can't get into my voicemail...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6638540

Yes!! I'm on T-mobile and the calls were starting a little later than you. Assuming you meant 5:45 est. Mine started at 6:10 CST. I called all 3 back, the first one was because it was someone I thought I knew (work related) from Memphis (901 area code). When I called it rang for a few then just went dead. The second was 612 (Minneapolis) and when I called that back someone answered and mumbled something and hung up. The 3rd was a 623 area code (Phoenix about 6:21 cst) and I actually got the girl that answered to talk. She said she hadn't touched her phone in 30 minutes and that she did not call a 205 area code at all.

Crazy... I didn't have time to check tmobiles forums to see if people were reporting issues since my first assumption was that it was just an issue with their system. But, it seems that way

I get lots of these weird calls. Also I have had interference on my phone by other voices, while I'm trying to speak and weird noises that my network could not tell me how it happened. They also said it should be impossible that I would hear any third speakers on my phone calls.

first there is the text messages, things like,

(hi sally, what courses you doing this semester")
(my names not sally, I'm a guy, but I do go to uni, very strange)

and other things like
"coming over soon bro where are you, whats happening lately"
(a total stranger messaging me this)

Then I get calls like, Is tony there. and other strange things that don't make sense, often they will ring back more than once, ruling out the possibility that they are dialing the wrong number or don't know what they are doing.

It seems they know what they are doing, but that they are just playing silly buggers. And I don't know them, they are complete strangers and always act like they don't know what happened.

I never thought much of it, just find it odd and harassing.
