More deaths in China from new H7N9 bird flu; U.S., Japan on guard

"April 5, 2013 – CHINA – Beijing said it was mobilizing resources nationwide to combat a new strain of bird flu that has killed six people, as Japan and Hong Kong stepped up vigilance and the United States said it was closely monitoring the situation. All of the 14 reported infections from the H7N9 bird flu strain have been in eastern China and at least four of the six dead are in the financial hub of Shanghai, a city of 20 million people. The strain does not appear to be transmitted from human to human but authorities in Hong Kong raised a preliminary alert and said they were taking precautions at the airport. Vietnam banned imports of Chinese poultry..."

New case of bird flu in China, as death toll rises to 14: total cases 63

April 15, 2013 – CHINA – A new case of bird flu in China’s capital, a 4-year-old boy who displayed no symptoms, is adding to the unknowns about the latest outbreak that has caused 63 confirmed cases and 14 deaths, health officials said Monday. The boy, who tested positive for the H7N9 virus, is considered a carrier of the strain and has been placed under observation to see if he develops symptoms, health authorities said. Medical teams found the boy in a check of people who had contact with a 7-year-old girl, who was confirmed as Beijing’s first case of H7N9 over the weekend: a neighbor of the boy bought chicken from the girl’s family. Beijing Health Bureau deputy director Zhong Dongpo said that, as puzzling as the case is, the boy adds another data point to medical experts limited understanding of H7N9. “This is very meaningful because it shows that the disease caused by this virus has a wide scope. It’s not only limited to critical symptoms. There can also be slight cases, and even those who don’t feel any abnormality at all. So we need to understand this disease in a rational and scientific way,” Zhong said at a news briefing...

But walkers have been warned to take care when walking along a stretch of the famous White Cliffs of Dover, after tons of chalk crashed into the English Channel, when part of the cliff-face sheared off. A giant mound of clay was left on the shore near St. Margaret’s Bay after the collapse between Dover and Deal in Kent. Dover Coastguard said a bench and fencing which sat on the cliff-top were also sent tumbling to the base, prompting warnings to coastal walkers. Fortunately, no one was hurt. The collapse is thought to have been caused by a combination of high winds and rain freezing after being absorbed into the chalk and then expanding, causing the cliff to weaken..."

No injuries in massive copper mine landslide in Utah; slide anticipated

"April 13, 2013 – SALT LAKE CITY — Kennecott Utah Copper has suspended mining inside one of the world’s deepest open pits as geologists assess a landslide the company says it anticipated for months. Shovel and haul operators were pulled back earlier Wednesday before the landslide tore loose around 9:30 p.m. inside the nearly mile-deep Brigham Canyon Mine, Kennecott spokesman Kyle Bennett said Thursday. “This slide was self-contained within the mine,” he said. The outside walls of the mining pit, which stretch 2 ½ miles from rim to rim, are holding with no danger to housing developments several miles away, he said. For more than a century, miners have reduced a mountaintop about 20 miles southwest of Salt Lake City to a deep hole. Kennecott, the latest in a succession of owners, is digging into a tooth-shaped volcanic core that has yielded millions of tons of copper and small amounts of gold and silver..."

Giant sinkhole splits ground in central region of Portugal

"April 11, 2013 – PORTUGAL - Excess water in the soil may be the cause of geological phenomenon occurred in Marvão in Alto Alentejo, which resulted in the opening of a crater about 100 meters deep and 17 meters in diameter. The geologist Victor Lambert explained this Tuesday that this is “a typical phenomenon” of areas where there is limestone and soil conditions exist, though in Portugal nothing has appeared of this size.” The geologist, who develops work for research institutions and ornamental rocks, reported in the local area that has Marvão caves and type of existing rock (limestone) tends to ‘dissolve,’ forming caves. “Here in Marvão, we had lots of rain a year. The water in these structures infiltrates, circulating inside, and in lime, circulates at high speeds, ie, the impact may cause is greater,” explained. However, the geologist pointed out that the crater in Marvão is interesting, because of the size and depth and’ three small holes,” but was keen to stress that this case is not an incident of aliens...

Russian city being ‘eaten alive’ by epidemic of sinkholes

"April 10, 2013 – RUSSIA – They may look like stills from an apocalyptic horror film, but these images have become a daily reality for residents in a Russian city. Citizens of Samara, in south east Russia, live in fear of the ground literally disappearing beneath them after huge sinkholes have started to appear all over their city, leaving devastation in their wake. The yawning underground caverns are all believed to have sprung up in recent weeks swallowing cars, buses and claiming at least one life. The sinkholes, some large enough to swallow an entire truck, are believed to have been caused by ground subsidence. It is thought the holes have been caused as ice thaws and melts into the ground, with the excess water causing soil decay underneath Samara’s roads. The massive craters have appeared in car parks, busy intersections, by the sides of roads, and on major and minor thoroughfares. It is believed at least one person has lost their life as a result of one of the crashes caused by the sinkholes..."

Late-season freeze sets Baltic ice record – massive fish kill reported in Sweden

"April 8, 2013 – BALTIC SEA – “Since record keeping began in the sixties, we’ve never encountered anything like this before,” ice breaker Ulf Gulldne told the local newspaper Örnsköldsviks Allehanda. On March 29th, 176,000 square kilometers of the Baltic Sea was covered in ice, a record for the time of year. On a map, it means about half of the central and northern parts are frozen over. Far north, the ice is both thick and difficult to break through. The date on which the ice reaches its maximum spread usually falls much earlier in the year. The previously latest date record was March 25th, 2008. That year, only 49,000 square kilometers of the Baltic was covered in ice, which was the smallest maximum spread of ice in the previous 100 years. “I’ve never seen this much ice this late in the season,” said Karl Herlin, captain of the icebreaker Atle, currently working off the coast of Luleå in northern Sweden...

According to the Washington Post, the landslide, which took place on March 27, displaced 200,000 cubic yards of earth on the western side of the island, or the equivalent of about 40,000 dump truck loads of dirt. In its immediate aftermath, at least four additional houses were put under evacuation orders, and another 30 or so were damaged or made inaccessible by the earth shift..."

Foreshock Earthquakes: Creep Breaks Not Triggers

"After a destructive earthquake, scientists sifting through the rumbles that preceded the big event often find foreshocks.

Foreshocks are smaller temblors that strike in the days and hours before a moderate-to-large earthquake. They're puzzling. Not all earthquakes have foreshocks, and despite decades of effort, no one has successfully found a way to predict earthquakes using foreshocks..."

Foreshocks may warn that a big quake is coming

"Advance warning is the ultimate prize for earthquake studies. Now, for the first time, one study offers tantalising evidence that it may be possible to build such a system to warn of some impending large quakes about an hour before they strike.

The finding comes from an analysis of the seismic record from the lead-up to a devastating earthquake that hit Turkey in 1999. This revealed that foreshocks rippled away from the source of the rupture in the 45 minutes before the quake – the first time that foreshocks have been conclusively linked to a major earthquake..."

7.8 magnitude earthquake strikes Iran-Pakistan border: largest quake in 40 years; hundreds feared dead

"April 16, 2013 – IRAN - A powerful, shallow 7.8 magnitude earthquake, which struck along the Iran-Pakistan border, was felt in several countries in Asia Tuesday, rocking buildings in the Indian capital of New Delhi and striking with powerful force in Iran, reports said. The earthquake measured 7.8 on the Richter scale on Iran’s border with Pakistan, and appeared to be centered in the Khash, Iran, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The earthquake was felt as far away as the Persian Gulf states, according to the Reuters. The depth of the earthquakes was 15.2 km (9.4 miles) below the earth’s surface. In New Delhi, which is periodically shaken by temblors, the distant quake could be felt through the city, as buildings shook for more than 10 seconds and, in some areas, frightened people ran into the streets..."

Market shivers, as gold prices plunge across the globe

"April 15, 2013 – ECONOMY - The biggest story on global financial markets today is the collapse of gold and silver prices. Gold is down more than $90 an ounce since Friday – a fall of about 7 percent. The price drop comes on top of last week’s 4.7 percent tumble. Silver prices tumbled 8 percent, or $24 an ounce. Copper is also falling. The reasons for the plunge are linked to the recent rise in the stock market, the slow, steady improvement of the US economy and the recent strength of the dollar..."

Global tension mounts: Iran warns U.S. an attack on nuclear facilities would trigger World War III

"April 15, 2013 – IRAN – Iran ratcheted up its vitriol against Israel and the United States over the weekend, warning that an attack on the Islamic regime’s nuclear facilities could lead to global war. The rhetoric eerily matched that currently coming out of North Korea against its perceived enemies. “Iran will not stand by in the face of such aggression,” Ali Ahani, Iran’s ambassador to France, said Sunday, according to the Islamic regime’s PressTV. “This can entail a chain of violence that may lead to World war III. A potential Israeli attack against Iran with an objective of destroying its scientific and nuclear facilities is sheer madness. Its consequences are disastrous and uncontrollable.” The deputy chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, Brig. Gen Masoud Jazayeri, warned the United States on Saturday that Iran would continue its nuclear program..."

Why Lake Erie is Under Attack from Algae Blooms

"The nutrients in the fertilizer runoff, particularly phosphorous, feed the growth of a type of algae called cyanobacteria. Besides being unsightly, the blooms hurt fish in the lake by decaying and consuming massive amounts of oxygen, creating dead zones. But the cyanobacteria also pose a health hazard to people; the predominant type of cyanobacteria present in the 2011 bloom, called Microcystis, produce a potent liver toxin. The study found that levels of this toxin in the surface of Lake Erie were up to 200 times above the limit deemed suitable by the World Health Organization..."

EL Hierro concerns me alot any thoughts on when????
 Quoting: anonymous 38037841

Any volcanic island has the potential for massive landslides which in turn causes a very large tsunami. This has been proven in the Hawaiian and Canary Island chains. With that being said, El Hierro does not concern me any more than any other volcano or disaster/doom. Anything can happen at anytime. There's no need to concern yourself with things you cannot control.

The best advice I can offer is, keep your eyes, ears and mind open. Live your life to the fullest and do not live in fear. What will be, will be...

China stabs U.S. in the back after Kerry diplomatic mission: accuses the U.S. of being threat to Asian region

"April 16, 2013 – BEIJING – China’s defense ministry made a thinly veiled attack on the United States on Tuesday for increasing tensions in the Asia-Pacific by ramping up its military presence and alliances in the region, days after the top U.S. diplomat visited Beijing. China is uneasy with what the United States has called the “rebalancing” of forces as Washington winds down the war in Afghanistan and renews its attention further east. China says the policy has emboldened Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam in longstanding territorial disputes with Beijing. China faces “multiple and complicated security threats” despite its growing influence, the Ministry of Defense said in its annual white paper, adding that the U.S. strategy meant “profound changes” for Asia. “There are some countries which are strengthening their Asia Pacific military alliances, expanding their military presence in the region and frequently make the situation there tenser,” the ministry said in the 40-page document, in a clear reference to the United States..."

Are you eating ‘superbugs?’ drug-resistant bacteria found at alarming rates on meat in stores

"April 16, 2013 – HEALTH – There is a lot of talk these days about how feeding antibiotics to livestock is resulting in ‘superbugs’ – bacteria resistant to drug treatment in humans and animals. But do consumers really need to be concerned about eating meat they buy at the grocery stores? A new report released today by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) says, yes. The group analyzed 2011 data recently released by the U.S. government and found 81 percent of ground turkey and 55 percent of ground beef sold in supermarkets carried antibiotic-resistant strands of salmonella and Campylobacter. Together these bacteria cause 3.6 million cases of food poisoning a year. More than half of all chicken sampled carried antibiotic-resistant E. coli. Almost 90 percent of all store bought meat also had signs of normal and resistant Enterococcus faecium – a bacteria that indicates the product came in contact with fecal matter at some point during or after processing..."

China Said to Invite Four Flu Experts as Disease Outbreak Widens

"Four international flu experts will arrive in China within days to help authorities respond to the country’s widening bird-flu emergency, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Nancy Cox, director of the flu division at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Anne Kelso, director of a World Health Organization flu research center in Melbourne, Malik Peiris from the University of Hong Kong, and Angus Nicoll, head of the Stockholm-based European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control’s flu program, will arrive on about April 17 to offer technical advice, said the people, who declined to be identified because the Chinese government hasn’t announced that the experts are being invited..."

Beijing fears over 4-year-old bird flu 'carrier'

Doctors say the discovery of a 4-year-old carrier of the H7N9 bird flu virus who shows no symptoms of the potentially lethal virus is a worrying development that could make the spread of the infection more difficult to monitor.

The Beijing Municipal Health Bureau said the boy was detected from a group of close contacts of the first infection in Beijing and the laboratory results showed the boy was an asymptomatic carrier of the disease.

Human to Human? Mystery intensifies on how H7N9 is spreading; most had no contact with poultry

"April 17, 2013 – BEIJING – The World Health Organization said on Wednesday that a number of people who have tested positive for a new strain of bird flu in China have had no history of contact with poultry, adding to the mystery about the virus that has killed 16 people to date. Chinese authorities have slaughtered thousands of birds and closed some live poultry markets to try and stem the rate of human infection, but many questions remain unsolved including whether the H7N9 strain is being transmitted between people. WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl confirmed that “there are people who have no history of contact with poultry,” after a top Chinese scientist was quoted as saying about 40 percent of those with the H7N9 flu had had no poultry contact. “This is one of the puzzles still (to) be solved and therefore argues for a wide investigation net,” Hartl said in emailed comments, though he did not know the exact percentage..."

Oyster crop close to complete ruin

"A MYSTERY flesh-eating disease has killed millions of dollars worth of Pacific oysters in Port Stephens and brought several growers close to financial ruin.

The Department of Primary Industries confirmed yesterday it was also investigating the unexplained deaths of previously unaffected Sydney rock oysters.

The department's scientists are working overtime to identify the disease before it causes further damage to the industry.

It is feared the Port Stephens disease, combined with the recent Hawkesbury River oyster deaths, will lead to an oyster shortage throughout NSW.

Several growers who spoke to the Newcastle Herald said the disease, which first appeared in January, had destroyed their 2013 winter crop and also next year's.

"It's pretty much wiped me out - it's had a massive impact on the industry," Lemon Tree Passage grower Paul Merrick said.

20% death rate of those infected is an estimate from earlier articles, scientists.

Based on a quick Google search these are the numbers I came up with for H1N1 to put it in perspective.

2009 H1N1 outbreak resulted in an infection rate of 11-21% globally. The mortality rate was around 5% of those infected. So, in other words you are 2-4x's as likely to catch H7N9 and 3x's as likely to die as a result.

Considering it's only April and this strain is just getting started I am not looking forward to this years flu season, especially after how early last year's season started.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Starving sea lion pups are washing up on Southern California beaches at a rate more than five times higher than usual, and scientists are scrambling to figure out why, officials said Wednesday.

Since the beginning of the year, 1,293 emaciated sea lions found stranded on beaches from San Diego to Santa Barbara have been treated at seven facilities in the state, Sarah Wilkin of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said during a conference call with reporters.

Last month, the agency declared an "unusual mortality event" that allowed more scientists to help search for the cause.

A leading hypothesis is lack of available food. Researchers were also doing tests to see if pollution, disease outbreak or algae bloom are to blame.

Most of the pups being treated weighed between 20 and 30 pounds when they were found, with some as small as 18 pounds. The animals should weigh about 65 pounds by now, she said.

As many as 25 percent of the seals have died after being brought in for treatment.
