Days before the March 1 deadline, Senate Republicans are circulating a draft bill that would cancel $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts and instead turn over authority to President Barack Obama to achieve the same level of savings under a plan to be filed by March 8.

The five- page document, which has the tacit support of Senate GOP leaders, represents a remarkable shift for the party. Having railed against Senate Democrats for not passing a budget, Republicans are now proposing that Congress surrender an important piece of its Constitutional “power of the purse” for the last seven months of this fiscal year.

I love it when they don't provide specific details. They make it sounds like it's way worse. $1.2 trillion cuts?

Nobody HAS to notice it... but Obama has said it will happen -- and he is going to make damn sure it will happen...

Unless of course, there is a deal made... and I am not sure that one will be made. Boehner does not have the support needed to pull it off.

People forget that government is overhead. It should have only the minimal resources to do it's job, provide justice and defend our borders.

Currently it takes more than half of our income and fails at it's basic mandate. I only wish the sequestration were more like 50% and focused primarily on handouts and welfare.

Then we'd see some real progress.

ok, i'm sorry if i say very stupid things, but if this happen US will go down economic and social too isn't it?

It will not really kick in for 30 days -- the Feds have to give 30 day notices for layoffs.

Even then, of the 1.2 trillion in cuts -- we are talking about 86 billion this year... and they are not actual cuts in the budget. The budget will still increase over last year -- just by 86 billion less. So all they have to do is maintain status quo with last year.

All this cut bull shit is a joke.

There is so much waste, fraud, theft, mismanagement that a real 5 percent cut wouldn't even begin to correct it.

Any private company can cut 5 percent without a problem. And as pointed out it is just a cut in the planned increase.

We are being scammed, but then what else is new.

naw, this is all business as usual. Any sequester has to be ORDERLY...that is all NON-ESSENTIAL personel go first....it would take more than 800,000 people to leave to get to the supervisors, and managers who can and will continue on.

there are at least 800,000 secretaries that will go first.

also FEMA is a waste of money...that organization's function can be outsourced as needed.

homeland security can go too...it was set up to support the patriot act which is now defunct...since obozo has no authority legally sign bills into law....

If Obama is so "concerned" about the budget, why did his wife spend $9000 on a Oscars dress? That would feed alot of hungry Americans.

Here's a link that explains the sequester issue with a single image. It's such a small amount, it's rather insignificant.

For example, compare how much money the U.S. Gov spent during WWII vs now. Yes, we won WWII on a fraction of the spending we currently do.
