the older S-300 version is much more long-range, but it is still at risk for being humiliaated by Israel, thus costing russians billions in lost AD reputation. russian can try to explain to prospective buyers that syria's s-300 wasn't really indicative of the system's true abilities in fully integrated arial-defense under russian command, but that's not gonna sound so credible anymore.

not to mention, russia is already losing billions of dollars by all the debt forgiveness going back to the days of soviet union, and no essentially giving syria free stuff including very expensive s-300.
