Re: I feel bad for millennials, they don't have a chance
I've noticed a scenario lately that seems to be getting worse each year for our young people: It has become nearly impossible to get a good job and be "well-off" self sufficient as a millennial without having well-off parents before you.

Consider this - A white male is 22 years old today. His parents had no money in savings. He wanted to go to college, but the only way to do it was student loans or working. The average cost of living on campus at a 4 year public school in a typical mid-western state is about 22,300 per year, taking on campus living with meal plan and books into account. So he took out student loans, to the tune of about 90,000 over 4 years. He graduated at 22, didn't find a girl at school to marry so he's on his own for now. Because he wasn't a minority or had any sort of disability, he had no assistance in his school cost.

He starts to look for a job. He must find one within 6 months of graduating to begin paying back his student loan. Because he had no credit and because his parent had no money, the interest rate on the loan is 6% (this is pretty standard and sometimes much worse). He will pay $1000 a month when the repayment starts.

In his job search for a good paying blue color job (40k+ to start), he comes across multiple applications that require a facebook profile link and a linked in profile link. If he doesn't have a Facebook or linked in, he isn't getting hired. If he has it all private, he isn't getting hired. If he has too many pictures and stories of his college days, he isn't getting hired. If he has made comments about how much he supported trump during the campaign that are easily found via a google name search, he isn't getting hired.

He finally finds a job in information technology, which he studied at school. He starts off with no experience and is making 45k a year, or about 3900 a month. After taxes and health insurance, he's bringing home about $2600 a month.

$1000 of that is gone to student loans. That leaves $1600 a month. He needs to look presentable and purchases a decent used car for $12,000. That costs him $200 a month, down to $1400 left. Add car insurance at $100 a month, $1300 left. He needs to eat, so $150 minimum per month to not be down to bare bones. $1150 a month left. He needs a place to live of course and finds a decent apartment in a good neighborhood, which will cost $900 a month, plus renters insurance, which is $100 a month. Down to $150 left. Interested in savings some cash? Going out with some friends occasionally? Purchasing a few entertainment items or furnishing items? Forget it. The only option left is to get a credit card and start racking up debt on it, which will will be hard to pay down or off without a significant raise.

So what are the options? First, the young man could have skipped college and the student loans. This would save him a significant expense over the next 10-15 years that amounts to 120k worth of debt that was never taken on. Second, he could get married. While this potentially doubles the loan debt if the person he marries is in the same boat, it could also allow a cut to living expenses and such in half, making it at least a little easier. Third (the most popular option), he could move back in with his parents. It would take several years to build up funds that aren't used toward housing and insurance, but at least he wouldn't be flat broke at all times. Fourth, he could attempt to make it on his own as described above and basically be broke all the time. There is a great chance his student loans will go into default as he finds it a burden to pay them each month, and the cycle of debt begins, with no ability to remove them from bankruptcy. Fifth, he could have been born to well-off parents. If his parents could have paid for his college tuition, he would be in much better shape.

In conclusion, for those of you that say millennials are babied and coddled, entitled, and doing this to themselves, think about how many millions of people right now from 22-34 or so are in this boat. There is a reason the student loan debt bubble is so huge now. The only chance they really have is to either be smart enough not to take student loan debt, even if it costs them jobs at large firms that essentially now all REQUIRE a degree, or they must have been born to a rich family. It's such a shame we are doing this to an entire generation of kids, but it's going to make the next 30 years or so a real challenge for us all when the next great recession hits because of it, only this time no one will have the funds to "buy our way out of it."
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3975992

It's not that they don't stand a chance, people today just make bad choices and doesn't know how to budget. Going off the example you provided above, his first mistake was paying 90K+ to go to college just for an IT degree. The first thing one must understand is, if you're just wanting to get into IT you don't need a degree to do so.

Your example pretty much is me. I came from a family with no money, I work in IT making $50k/year, the only difference being was that when I was in high school I knew I wanted to work in IT. I also knew that I didn't want to pay $90,000+ to go to college, and I also knew that having to have a degree was pure bullshit unless you wanted to become a doctor or lawyer. A degree means nothing, I knew this, so I opted to skip college and immediately after graduating High School I got into an entry-level position in IT and over the years I gained enough experience and knowledge that I was able to work my way up.

Since then, I've been able to save up plenty of money on top of having had a retirement fund since the day I started working after high school. The last time I did the math on what I have in my 401K and other investments on top of what I have saved up, I could easily retire when I'm 50 if I wanted to.

So you can't tell me that millennial's have no chance, they have just as much of a chance as I did, the problem is that millennial's tend to be lazy, spoiled brats who thinks the world revolves around them and that everything should be given to them. That's now how it works.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3081291

For the rich ones, sure, AC, but in my case my high school teachers very strongly suggested to everyone to sign onto the most amount of student loans they could get if they couldn't successfully compete for a scholarship. Student loans were repeatedly instilled to our heads as THE single best way to not only forward our lives for higher education, but through colleges and/or universities you're guaranteed the best of the best jobs in your chosen field(s). You just gotta work really, really hard for it all.

In reality, AC, Bush Jr. and Obama both have permanently shipped overseas the bulk of IT and other high end American jobs. Good luck finding a job in your field when your job forever no longer exists here in the U.S. What's more is by the time you do graduate from your chosen and accepted into college and/or university there's still no guarantee of anything but an almost perfect chance of the jobs available to you in your chosen field of profession will still be available here in the States once you've graduated! Trump's bringing back many manufacturing jobs, sure, but nowhere remotely enough to truly make the U.S. the high quality goods manufacturer and exporter it used to be.

In other words, AC, you're both right and wrong. The IT field is exploding with jobs, yes, but at the great cost of many other jobs nationwide as more and more jobs are being done by specifically designed automatic machines. So enjoy your IT job, AC... while it lasts.

You left out joining the military bro... Yea you may get drug into war but school is paid for
 Quoting: 4D Viewer

Yep. With a college degree, most branches will put you through Officer's school. They will pay off your loans and you give them 6 years of your life. You'll make O-2 or O-3. You will travel, gain new skills, learn to be a leader, not a whiner. Come out of active duty, stay in reserves, apply your newly acquired knowledge and have veteran's preferences. Oh, and there is a very small chance you may be killed. But, living in squalor in an unhappy life, up to your ass in debt is not much to look forward to.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74667749

Yeah, but y'all talk about this as though it's guaranteed. There's alot more chance you'll be killed in action by friendly fire one way or another or just outright blow your head off or otherwise kill yourself and possibly others just because you can't take what's happening to you mind, body, and soul as you're finding yourself absolutely loving shooting animals, men, women, and children and hating yourself for it so you find suicide to be the best way to end your soul deep anguish. Of course your suicide is when the gobs of pills the Military psychiatrists prescribe you're seeing for hours on end very frequently.

What I described is a major reason why the Draft is soon to be re-instigated by Trump in the near future when he starts an all-out nuclear WWIII. Good luck with dealing with the god awful life choices and executing the illegal and unlawful orders you're frequently given on a daily basis.

This whole situation makes me so sad, having an 11 and 9 year old. I fight my spouse all the time about even sending them to college, at least until they know what they want to do for real, and not being forced to pick a major when they have no idea what life is like. He is still stuck in the mind set of college is just what you do after high school. That, and it was "the best time of my life and we wouldn't want them to miss out on the experience"! My opinion is the experience now days is just brainwashing and completely different than ours. It turns them into semi adults that have no idea about what real life entails. There are many ways to be productive that don't involve a four year degree. This is usually figured out, however, after $100k in student loans have been racked up and 4 years wasted.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 35171494

If things don't get under control, with the report today released that the current student loan debt is $1.4 trillion, you're children will be looking at going to college (if they choose that route) with the total national student loan debt approaching the annual national budget.

Unfortunately for us all poor people having many life experiences that don't involve crime in any sort of way costs way too much, and the scholarship programs out there are all cutthroat business types. You must sacrifice your Humanity and soul if you want to become a big name anything these days...

I have 4 friends who were home schooled, 3 different familys. None of them have jobs but one who flips burgers. All mid 20s right now too. One of them is a girl with 3 kids living with her grand parents, never had a job or anything.

Pretty much spot on except my wife and I make 60K each and only she has student loans and we pay 2K/MO on them so they will be done in 3 yrs.

Also, renters insurance is like 25/MO for an apartment

Bad parenting. False sense of reality.
My children received a full dose of reality life lessons. Get your ass up and go find a life. My two boys declined further education and now pull down nice paychecks, own homes, raising family. Both born in 80's, while not true millennials we do know fukedup kids from 80's pampered by stupid parents.

Re: I feel bad for millennials, they don't have a chance
There's plenty of IT work available for people without degrees. Get a certification or two and start entry level, even if it's end-user helpdesk. Although you won't make much initially, one will gain experience which is the most important thing in getting a better IT job. Having certification in the same technology you are experienced with is a huge resume boost, and can also lead to raises and promotions with a current employer... With patience, promotions come relatively easy to a helpdesk person who gets certified in whatever database technologies are used by the company. You can land an Administrator role before you know it.

In my experience, being intelligent, experienced, professional and certified are the keys to truly gainful IT work. In every interview I've had, a degree was never mentioned a single time. Sure, they might list it in the candidate requirements, but it rarely comes up and can be easily offset with experience, etc. Tons of brilliant IT people don't have degrees, to this day.

I'm now a Business Intelligence Developer for a Fortune 500. Also doing my own work on the side.

The only 'student debt' I've ever had was a mere 3 grand for some very specialized Oracle Database training years ago. It was a good investment that ended up paying off big time.

It's funny, I am actually in school right now typing this. I am current undergrad student that is 30 years old. I'm a single father and his mom doesn't give me shit in child support. So, I understand everyones struggle.

With a stroke of luck, I found my first IT job (was in 15 years restaurant industry, and wanted to go back to my roots before it was too late). So, with 0 experience, other than doing freelance work I was handed a position as a help desk/sys engineer. Loved it and was on a year contract. The year contract currently expired, but I have a license to take my HDI certificate and one more year less with college and I will have a degree in computer science with programming. I am currently looking for IT related work now since my summer break is about to begin. BTW, a community college is a great start to go to. It will cost anyone < $5,000 for a two year degree. Most IT entry jobs require some sort of degree and/or certificate.

IT is like this these days:

0-5 years experience: 32,000 - 50,000
5-10 years: 50,000-80,0000
10+ years: 80,000 - 120,000

it just depends on what IT work you want to go into. There are so many IT career paths. Hopefully Trump will stop the flood of damn Indians from outsourcing IT jobs!

I'll sum up the reason the millenials are fucked up:

Retirement is a Ponzi scheme that began in 1935 with President Franklin Roosevelt.
Babi boomers who complain of millenials are the ones who took advantage of this scheme. That is, it is the generation that simply enslaved the other.

True enough, ozi, but one has to survive, and unfortunately the Rockefellers'/Rothschilds' Federal Reserve Banking System has totally enslaved literally each and every one of us, me included. Money is in such short supply for most of us, and that "work hard and you'll earn more" mentality is such BS that those who believe such nonsense should be the ones to work that much harder and live what they preach instead.

I absolutely hate the fact my life is ruled by money. Always needing alot of money just to get food, drink, and other essentials. Nothing lasts long due to Planned Obsolesce as well. So you're literally forced to buy, buy, buy, consume, consume, consume no matter what. I'll be truly happy, I believe, once all hell breaks loose here in the States and money is no longer the mass' one true god, but surviving and being our true selves all the while.

Look OP - this same scenario applies to EVERYONE. The thing is the millennials think they are special and like they are the only ones to ever have it hard.

My grandfather ate cats and rabbits during the depression. They lived in the attc of someone else's house. The fucking attic. Millions of mid westerners loaded everything they ever had into a truck and hauled ass to Cali only to be treated like shit. Go rent Grapes of Wrath and then get back to us.

It's always been hard. Only now it's hard for everyone becasue the Capitalist corporations squeeze every mother loving penny out of every worker and product and invest nothing in our future.

this US way of living is nuts and at end. Parents get rid of sons when they go to the college, and they obligation with then is over. It was true from baby boomers to year 2K but not anymore.
In most countries, sons stays with parents until get married, choose a college near the parents house and only with marriage they move to another house.
Problem is that ppl dont want to get married anymore, so they keep staying 4ever with parents, like in Italy.

I pretty much agree with the OP except on two points.

1. IT jobs don't pay that much anymore, unless you have LOTS of experience and GREAT skill at it. Someone fresh out of college is lucky to get a 30k a year job in IT. I have an IT degree and started at 25k in a tech support position at a public school.

2. Marriage isn't an option for a lot of people. Unless you are attractive and wealthy, most girls (at least the white ones) are untouchable. I'm neither and I've literally made chicks gag by smiling at them.

No I don't live with my parents but I live in a shitty apartment with water damage and drive a shitty 15 year old car that I inherited from my grandmother. I don't have the income to upgrade either.

I don't have a criminal record, never did drugs, did fairly well in school and got a college degree, and I'm over-worked and underpaid at a job that requires skilled labor. I have no prospects and no way to upgrade my standard of living.

The "American Dream" is dead. Dead. Dead.

It's not a recession when it's a Depression.

[link to www.economicshelp.org]

A recession is characterised as a period of negative economic growth for two consecutive quarters. In a recession, unemployment will rise, output fall and government borrowing increase.

A depression is a recession much more severe and long lasting. There is no agreed upon definition of a depression. But, generally a depression would have some of the following characteristics.

Decline in output for a prolonged period e.g. greater than 2 years.

A drop in output of 10% or greater.

-----------------------About a 50% snip-----------------------

I like this quote on that link: “A recession is when your neighbor loses his job; a depression is when you lose yours.”.

I should also mention too that with a recession there would be the prospect of jobs if you look hard enough. With an economic depression look at what happened during the Great Depression 1.0. You think our grand parents and their parents had it hard? Think again.

They had it remarkably easy to how we have it today. Most people back then were already hard working and well skilled in whatever crafts/jobs they were actively doing. They didn't have ANY of our fancy technological marvels to destroy them mind, body, and soul to the point of worshiping at the altar of Lucifer with such amazing ease. Not only will the Fall of the United States of America will be extremely devastating to all Americans, except for the rich of course, but it will be so far beyond what happened to "Holy" Roman Empire of old. When the Roman Empire fell it completely destroyed the then Modern Society which strongly contributed to the Dark Ages. I'm not talking about the Muslims' overwhelming contributions to Europe's Dark Ages as that's a different topic for another thread.

There's not much written about what happened after the Fall of Rome for three reasons really. The eastern half of the Roman Empire took over and that became horrifically Corrupted really. Secondly the Library of Alexandra was burnt to a crisp and officially everything in the Library was burnt to ashes. Thrice how can you operate an Empire when your leaders have gone totally out of their way to destroy your way of life and your enemies actively plunder your life before ultimately raping and killing you and your entire bloodline?

Couple this with the fact so many of us, myself included, are so enamored with our electronics especially smart phones and/or other mobile devices that we have totally lost all rationale and capability to cope with reality without our Skynet monitored electronics. Even if EMPs don't wipe out our electronic gadgets when our Economic Bubble is finally burst by the Illuminati members who have been actively propping up not only our country's economy solo, but have been the ones this whole time maintaining your and my lifestyles.

We're on the verge of losing literally everything with this country. Trump may be doing his best to repair the damages with our Government and national economy, but the Illuminati members - Rothschilds and Rockefellers via their Federal Reserve Banking System. The Federal Reserve is what has been enabling us to live out our tiny slice of the American Dream. Once the Federal Reserve is either destroyed or their Masters/Owners really decide that now it's time to initiate the great Luciferian NWO takeover not a single one of us will do anything about it, including myself. Why? Because survival will be far more important to ourselves and our families than bothering to try to take down Lucifer and his Fallen Angels both physically and spiritually. That's a problem that will require Divine Intervention, and that ain't happenin' any time soon unfortunately for us all.
Conspiracy Theorist is nothing more than a derogatory title used to dismiss a critical thinker.

A time is coming when men will go mad,
and when they see someone who is not mad,
they will attack him, saying,
'You are mad; you are not like us."

Re: I feel bad for millennials, they don't have a chance
To the OP I must say I agree.

I am 25 years old and accept I am a Millenial. I got kicked out of home at the age of 1o.I made stupid mistakes throughout my earliest parts of my youth, was involved in gangs, but I was always smarter than I thought I was, even my own teachers saw that.

Long story short OP I knew I was good with my hands and I decided to become a car mechanic. I spent 4 years at a Honda dealership in the north east where rust is the most dealt with. Then I went to a Mercedes Benz dealer where I honed myself self further. I'm now working at a mclaren dealer ship In the eastern seaboard. I'm making north of 150k yearly. I had the will, the logic and common sense to do it. It's easy, just my generation needs to wake the fuck up.

Oh barf, give me a fucking break.

I'm a generation Xer. We all had college loans and we all had it tough coming out of high school and college. We struggled to make ends meet and took jobs that were beneath us to pay the bills.

Every generation has it hard just starting out. WE ALL DO!

Re: I feel bad for millennials, they don't have a chance
The Millenials will be the first demographic to "self cull" in any sort of survival situation...

Once the lights go out and their smart phone goes down they'll realize there isnt a free downloadable app for "How to live self sufficiently"

They will turn on each other first, then DEMAND the .gov take care of their "needs"

When this fails they will believe they are entitled to your preps..

because, "feels"

Be warned!
 Quoting: DRGONZO

A lot of millennials are hoping for exactly that end. They see no future under this system.

They will be the first generation to happily self-cull. Millions of millennials are in their parents' basement right now patiently waiting to die.

Many millennials hope old folks will suffer as they cling to life in the post-apocalyptic world, complaining to each other about how the now-dead millennials refused to help them pump toxic water from the river.
