Neptune sized. That's roughly 4 times the size of earth. Or 5 times the size of Venus. Venus is the largest and brightest visible object in the sky after the sun and the moon. Even if this alleged planet is closer to the sun than Mercury, it would be a naked eye object. Simple logic says that there is no way planet x could be where you say without everyone noticing it. For Christs sake, it would appear almost as big as the moon!!

I got to watch it using nothing more than a pair of binoculars with sunnies attached by elastic bands and a bit of paper

now if I can see a planet as `small' as venus in front of the sun using that- why couldn't I see a much bigger planet doing the same??

Well, that would depend on its position between Earth and the sun. If it was as close to the sun as Venus or Mercury, it wouldn't blot out all that much...although it would certainly be more than what Venus or Mercury would do.
