TEPCO spraying water directly into No.2 reactor

The operator of the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has begun injecting water directly onto the spot in the No. 2 reactor where the fuel is believed to be located after melting down in the pressure vessel.

Tokyo Electric Power Company has been spraying water continuously into the reactors since the March accident to cool them down.

As of 11AM on Wednesday, the bottom of the No.2 reactor was 114.4 degrees Celsius, compared to 84.9 degrees at the No.1 reactor and 101.3 at the No. 3 reactor.

Govt. to prepare medical-industry hub in Fukushima

Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry has announced plans to create a cutting edge hub for medical and nursing related businesses in Fukushima to promote reconstruction in the area.

The government is to subsidize companies in Fukushima that research and develop cancer drugs, medical equipment and nursing-care robots. By promoting more investment, it hopes to create the world's largest facility for cancer treatment and research and other medical related development.

The head of a government nuclear watchdog has criticized Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) for not being transparent enough, after it submitted documents earlier this month that were mostly blacked out.

"Why don't they release all the information? There are problems with TEPCO's attitude toward providing information," Hiroyuki Fukano, 54, head of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA), told the Mainichi in an interview on Sept. 16.

Some of the people here may have the troublesome experience of submitting your financial report to your local tax office with all these receipts to prove the expenses occurred during the fiscal year. But this is under the normal situation and you are ready for it, or you might hire your own accountant to prepare for.
TEPCO, Tokyo Electricity Power Co, responsible for the Fukushima Nuclear Power Station troubles, has started to send 60,000 households (totaling 160,000 people) the ‘Application Forms for the Compensation to the Fukushima Nuclear Accident.’ The documents are consisted of A) 156 page manual and B) 56 page forms. You are also requested to attach the receipts and other necessary certification documents to prove your damages, including mental effect, incurred from the accident.

Global nuclear power capacity will rise by nearly 70 percent in the next 20 years, despite a turn in sentiment following the Fukushima crisis, driven by demand in mainly Asian countries, the World Nuclear Association said in a report.

"It is clear that nuclear prospects in Germany and Japan have been damaged by Fukushima, but the prospects for new reactor build continue to be strong in China, India, Korea and the United Kingdom," the body said in its nuclear fuel report, which is published every two years and was released on Thursday.

DOE to hold follow-up at vit plant

The review last year was conducted after Walter Tamosaitis, a former research and technology manager at the plant, was abruptly removed from work on the plant in July 2010. He has filed a whistleblower complaint, alleging he lost his position for raising safety concerns about the future operation of the $12.2 billion plant. DOE contractor Bechtel National disagrees, saying he wrote a disrespectful email that upset DOE.

They will be doing some things differently this visit after questions were raised about workers' comfort in raising issues in earlier interviews.

The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board also looked at policies and attitudes toward safety at the plant and concluded that behavior by DOE and contractor management reinforces a subculture that deters workers from reporting and management from resolving technical safety concerns.

The executive summary of the review has been interpreted by some people to indicate that "everything is good," Podonsky said. But there are issues that need to be addressed and the body of the report lays out those issues, he said.

The report said that a significant number of employees interviewed were concerned that a reputation as a "troublemaker" would affect their employment as some of the labor-intensive work at the plant is completed. Several senior staff and managers said the situation with Tamosaitis contributed to a chilling effect that may reduce their willingness to raise technical or safety issues.

GAO Report: Nuclear Material Sent Overseas Remains Unaccounted For

WASHINGTON, Sept. 17 -- Nuclear material, including enriched uranium that could be used in weapons of mass destruction, sent overseas by the United States as part of nuclear cooperation agreements has not been fully accounted for, the Government Accountability Office revealed.

The Department of Energy and Nuclear Regulatory Commission have been the two agencies responsible for keeping track of much of the material, but those agencies also have been unable to confirm the location and security of the material in all cases. The highly-enriched uranium is a product that could be used in applications such as weapons.

Further, visits to facilities where highly-enriched uranium and other nuclear materials from the U.S. were in use found that adequate security measures existed only approximately half of the time. While the DOE has taken steps to improve security, each country has been in charge of its own security program

Sizewell: Probe into water leak at nuclear power station

In 2007, as much as 40,000 gallons of radioactive water spilled out of a 15ft-long split in a pipe at the station, some leaking into the North Sea, but alarms did not sound in the main control room.

Mr Watkins said this incident led to “a complete review and overhaul” of the plant’s design and safety systems.

He added the latest spillage did not mean those improvements had not been effective as the drop in water levels in the pond caused by the leak had not been enough to trigger alarms.

Opponents voice concerns over nuke plant license renewal

HAMPTON — Residents and others opposed to the renewal of the Seabrook nuclear power plant's license spoke out Thursday in oftentimes vehement disagreement about moving forward with the issue.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission presented preliminary site-specific results of its license renewal environmental review for Seabrook Station during a lengthy session at 1 Liberty Lane in Hampton.

Several members of the public came to hear the presentation, and during the question-and-answer portion addressed their concerns about the nuclear facility and the possible risk to the health and well-being of the nearby community.

"I think we're in great danger," said resident Leigh Roberts. "We don't really get listened to, but we're concerned about allowing a license to continue when we know there are problems with that place."

The report detailed at least one problem that has been pinpointed during the license renewal process, which is concrete degradation at the facility due to evidence of an alkali-silica reaction at the plant.

The reaction occurs when concrete has been exposed to water for long periods of time.

The cancer studies were already done on the survivors of Hiroshima, I Know because my grandmother who was at Hiroshima. Her medical history is still followed by the U.S., Canadian, and Japanese governments. they to this day still exchange her medical histories with each other. she is 97 and has had breast cancer twice. She was what we now call a "First responder". From what she has told me every other first responder she knows of has died of cancer. Most by 1986. She said that 100% of the people she Knew and her friends knew died of cancer. no exceptions. She is apparently the last and only survivor of this group of first responders from Hiroshima.
It takes years for the true death toll to show up, radiation is a "Silent Killer".
If Governments were to tell the truth about the long term lethality of radiation there would be riots in the streets.
The studies left out and excluded the refugee population that was living in Hiroshima at the time.
This altered the death toll by a substantial amount.
They are lying too you about the danger both short term and long term.
Repeated exposure to radiation is much more lethal than a single exposure. The exposure can occur through simple contact with someone carrying an elevated level of radiation in or on their body.

for a dietary supplement try taking "Glacier Rock Dust". At Chernobyl they were feeding between 5-15 grams a day.

Autumn produce delicacies in Fukushima go uneaten

After radioactive cesium exceeding the government-set provisional limit of 500 becquerels per kilogram was detected in some wild mushrooms, the shipment of wild mushrooms was banned in 43 municipalities.

Producers and distributors are desperately trying to convince consumers of the safety of their products. Since July, a private research institute in the city has received more than 50 requests from farmers to inspect food for radioactive substances.

One of them is Anzai Orchard, which produces and sells pears. At one of the orchard's farm stands, a notice indicating "26 becquerels of cesium" can be seen on boxes of Kosui variety pears.

At Onuma lake in Maebashi, a major fishing site for surf smelt, radioactive cesium exceeding the provisional limit was detected in the fish at the end of August, forcing the city to put off its fishing season, originally scheduled to start Sept. 1.

Since the company introduced a simplified radiation indicator in July, it verified radiation levels in about 250 varieties of vegetables and fruits.

Experts say Fukushima 'worse' than Chernobyl

At least one billion becquerels of radiation continue to leak from Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant each day even though it is now more than five months after the March earthquake and tsunami that damaged the facility.

[link to english.aljazeera.net]

- Uhm...let's see. 1 billion a day for six months is approximately 180 billion becquerels.

Stay out of the rain...
