Gundersen The other alternative is to prevent the radiation from going out. Well, the horse is already out of the barn on that. The radiation is pretty much thoroughly throughout not just the reactor containment but also the other buildings. But it’s still critical to seal all those penetrations that are leaking. You have to find the leaks and plug them. Now that’s exacerbated by the fact that this already a very high radiation zone. It’s not like you can send somebody in with a caulking gun to slap some caulking in these. The radiation levels are frequently near lethal and finding and stopping those leaks – there’s a priority to get the nuclear fuel out of those nuclear reactors. But it’s going to be extraordinarily difficult because of the high radiation levels. So the best solution for the amount of water that’s being built up – 400 tons a day – is to drop the water table and to prevent any further water from going in. Fairewinds has been approached by two American manufacturers with solutions to the problems at Daiichi and trying to get that technology implemented in the Daiichi cleanup. The Japanese have rejected both of these American manufacturers. And I’m sure there’s been others. But the fact of the matter is that the technology for the Zeolite trench is in use in America right now at the West Valley site and has a proven track record of being very, very effective. So we’re in a situation where an effective American technology is being prevented from being implemented in Japan by either the Japanese government or Tokyo Electric, and I really don’t know which. |

Mitsubishi sent a reply to a contract dispute filing from Southern California Edison that said the company “grossly failed to appropriately model” conditions in the steam generators it designed and built, leading to the early retirement of the power plant. Edison argues that Mitsubishi is liable for costs that could run into the millions or even billions of dollars. In a statement, Mitsubishi called SCE’s contentions “factually incorrect, legally unsound and inappropriate.” The company said it will defend itself through a dispute resolution process. Waterbug (OP) User ID: 34388912 United States 07/22/2013 10:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here's a juicy little admission.. Release of nuclear plant ‘effluents’ into lake described as part of normal cycle [link to www.harborcountry-news.com] The May 5 release of about 80 gallons of slightly radioactive water from the Palisades nuclear power plant into Lake Michigan was unusual because it wasn’t planned. But the incident brought into focus what many Southwest Michigan residents likely didn’t realize: The region’s two nuclear power plants (Palisades and the Donald C. Cook Plant in Lake Township) routinely discharge radioactive material into the air and into Lake Michigan. In the nuclear industry, it’s called effluents. The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission allows such releases, as long as they are closely monitored and do not exceed federal radiation release standards set in place by the NRC. “Plants need to discharge small amounts of radioactive materials to operate,” said Jack Geissner, branch chief for the regional NRC office. John Cassidy is a senior health physicist for the NRC regional office in Lisle, Ill. His job is to perform radiation inspections at the regional plants and study plants’ dosimetry records. Dosimeters measure absorbed doses of radiation. Radiological releases are an inevitable part of the nuclear power industry, he said. Last Edited by Waterbug on 07/22/2013 10:35 AM |
