The Upcoming War on Used Games
[link to www.forbes.com]

On the upcoming Xbox and Playstation systems, there will likely be an extra charge to be able to play a used game. That's right...developers are getting upset that kids pay for their game, beat it or get tired of it in a few weeks, and sell it to GameStop.
Gamestop, then, turns around and re-sells it for a profit to someone who hasn't had the opportunity to play it.
Game developers are pissy because they see none of this profit.

...

They want to be paid each time their game is sold...whether it's new or not. The real catch is that you can buy the game used at a dicounted price no problem. You just have to pay extra if you actually want full access to the game. It's the same as you going out to buy a 99 Ford Focus and only being allowed to drive it if you pay royalties to Ford.

Why is this a problem?

You aren't going to be able to get games at a reasonable discount for buying used. Even though you paid lessr the game, you'll be paying more just to play it, so you might as well just get a new one.
Instead of whining about diminishing profits because of kids returning their games back to GameStop, perhaps they should just make a game that you want to keep. I have no problem playing games like Skyrim and Forza for month after month because they update with new content to keep you interested. Perhaps if developers don't want people returning their products, they should get with the program and do the same.

I won't be buying any new gaming system that supports charging you extra for recycling a used game. I suggest you all do the same.

Re: The Upcoming War on Used Games
I like used games, since I don't need to buy titles on day one, however:

The future is 100% online distribution like Steam. No DVD that can get scratched (or ripped and pirated), new games cost what they do now, then the price goes down over time as the game gets "old". (and really, if the game is still good who cares?)

I either just troll through the back catalog and buy stuff at the $10-$20 or wait for the big sales where you can get say, ALL of the GTA series for $20 or whatever. Brilliant.

I can imagine that will be the future as well. I don't think it's going to be as soon as people think though...

It's not so much an issue of pirated material. The problem the developers have is not making money off of sales of their used games...which makes no sense considering they already received money for selling that game.

Re: The Upcoming War on Used Games
In the end it all boils down to the same thing, greed.

Everyone wants a slice of the same pie, so games that should be half what they cost now cost twice as much. Cartridge games used to be $60 and were harder to program for since they needed more memory tricks to fit everything in it, and to be able to draw it on the screen. Consoles these days are easier to develop for, and use much longer lasting technology.
Everything came from Nothing and shall become Nothing once more.

I can't help but agree with you on most of that...the only problem is the consumer. This would practically eliminate the possibility for people under the age of 18 to pay for any games. That is...unless they can use mommy's credit card. I just forsee this as spawning problems faster than fucking gizmo gremlins. It's not something that's just going to occur the very moment the new system comes out.

To answer your doubt look at the iPod/iPhone. no disc media tons of games tons of Consumers tons of money. The gaming industry as a giant Corporation does not concern itself with minors. Comply or your shit out of luck. For you to say that the next gens wont switch to this form of media right away, you greatly underestimate the evolution of technology. Putting a disc drive in a next gen console would be like putting a tape player on your iPod.

Re: The Upcoming War on Used Games
I've heard about this and I can understand where the companies are coming from. Gamestop not only makes money selling a used game once but it will often sell the same game multiple times.

I'm certainly not the type of person who feels like game developers shouldn't get paid for their efforts but I also feel that destroying the used game market will force many people out of the video game market entirely.

I cant' personally afford to shell out $60 for a game, no matter how badly I want to play it. I simply can't justify the expense. I do, however, wait until the price comes down and buy a used copy. I'm still waiting on Skyrim.

I feel like there has to be a better solution. Something akin to having Licensed Used Games where a portion of the profits go to the developers.

Incentives, such as free DLC when you buy a game new seem to help a bit as well.

While I'm on the topic of DLC, I think that market would decline significantly, as well, if the used game market was eliminated.

Downloading options, such as Steam, are not a very good solution because consumers want to have something when they pay for it. Not to mention the fact that Steam has caused many problems for people in the past, myself included.

THIS is the best argument against moving away from disks and towards paid downloads.

It may seem stupid, but I like having that little booklet that comes with it. Games like Morrowind and Skyrim have those huge paper maps that come with it too. Life will suck if that goes away.

I agree, I still have fond memories of playing Pirates! Gold on the NES and plotting my course with the included map.

More recently, I've found the instruction booklet quite useful for remembering the commands in games like Mass Effect.

I believe it's been proven that consumers like to have something physical when they pay for something. The exception being things like apps.

Yup yup

Apps are an interesting phenomenon. Considering I beat the new Angry Birds in like 6 hours and I'm months into Skyrim with barely a dent made...I think the need for solid material is non-existant.
Plus, most apps are like 99 cents or FREE...so, I'm not expecting too much. But 60 bucks!? ...They better give me a goddamn map...

the future consoles will force you to "connect" to play. all games will be downloaded but if you dont connect to their servers, you wont even be able to play the game. there is no "offline gaming" in the future. they need to monitor you at all times. you can either accept the monitoring and play the super cool future warfare 8000 or you can play outdated games and get made fun of. i want to be cool so i will accept he microchip implant up my butt

I thought it was funny that you mentioned the booklet. The booklet that came with BF3 was non existent. It did not include a book like all other games, it just had a little two page pamphlet that has how to connect to live, how to get ahold of EA, and Warnings. Nothing else was included.

I got to thinking about how they would eliminate gamestop, and disc games. Yet still have kids be able to beg mom n pops for them while they are at the store. Game DL centers. All they have to do is pop a little kiosk up next to the RedBox kiosk and everyone is set. thumbdrive that sucker straight to your living room. All the stores are going to love them, because they eliminate the need for a clerk to unlock a case and the theft from kids walking out with games.

Next your going to ask about the piracy problem and how downloads would be so easily pirated. Next to the fact that it doesnt really matter what kind of piracy protection exists it will be cracked and it will be upgraded and changed. If you check out some of the piracy protection that comes on bu-ray discs you will see that they are getting a lot better.

The reason that I for one believe that next gens wont have a disc slot, is blu-ray. Its Sony's and Microsoft will not pay sony for it. and Using dvd is obsolete so that leaves them with digital and that is the route they are taking. Look at live, Digital downloads of movies, music, tv, and games. You do not even need a cable box anymore just use your xbox.
