I am doing a little experiment here to prove a point. I am on welfare in the UK. I am not proud of this, I was stuck in a rut for my entire 20's and had no motivation to do anything to better my life because I had no reason to do so. Working a basic job would have paid less than doing nothing, I got very very depressed and fat. I was lazy at first but it slowly crushed me. Anyway, since 'austerity' and things like the bedroom tax and generally lower amounts of easy benefits I have turned my life around. I am about to join the Navy to serve my country, I have learned to drive, lost 100lbs, and come off all the depression medication I was on for nearly 5 years. That has taken me 3 years to repair the damage. OK, how is this relevant you may ask? Well, since I started on this journey 4 years ago to where I am now things changed from survival to thriving. I went from 'not having enough money to eat' and living benefit cheque to benefit cheque before. To where I am now, now admittedly I had to apply for several 'new' austerity disability benefits. Whereas before I was handed them like candy. But in doing so it taught me even on a small level that I had to work for what I received. I am in fact on slightly more money now than I was before Austerity, the difference being that it was harder, much harder, to get the money. I had to have months of meeting and applications with the help of a benefits advisor followed by a health assessment by a DR, lawyer and social worker in a 2-hour long interview. Again how is this relevant? It taught me the value of hard work in a way sure but still not really relevant. This is just a bit of backstory. Now what I find interesting is that currently I 'earn' (and I am very much looking forward to starting basic soon so I no longer have to rely on this) £920 a month, my rent is £450, Gas £50, £electricity £30, C-Tax £22, Water £14, Internet £30. Leaving me £320-330 ish a month for food and things. With that £330 I have built myself a home gym, moving my bedroom into the living room to replace my TV area which I do not own (the tv) and I have spent the past 9 months learning to drive at £25 a lesson (I passed). I buy a basic homecooked diet, occasionally I buy myself new clothes and takeaways or meal out. I have saved £1500 for a car for when I start working. People bitch too much and live beyond their means. I also do not have kids I couldn't afford! Benefits just keep people down, governmental social help programmes should be replaced by charity. It was only when they tried taking it away that I woke up to how I was doing nothing to improve my own life. People are too entitled, fed a diet of fame and fortune with no concept of reality. They want all the luxury goods and have no concept of saving, and no idea of how to budget and live a fulfilling life without riches. I thought I would share. In short, I THRIVE on $14870.99 net a YEAR and even managed to save $2000. |

If I can have all that and a home gym plus a vaping habit and while still having the odd $100 night out plus saving $2000 on under $15000 a year net there is no reason anybody cant. |

It taught me many valuable lessons on hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. Wish me luck in the Navy! |

Not many luxuries, but sometimes get our expenses paid for a working visit to China (like now). Some of our friends are on waaay less than us, and they're OK so long as they own their own home, with no mortgage. Quoting: Wurzel I know the US is quite expensive, but seriously, 60k? Quoting: Wurzel I quickly found out the U.S. is way more expensive than the U.K. Apart from petrol and a few other items. Running a small business, you will pay huge taxes. Rent is super high in any big city (Im talking £1000 for a 1 bedroom, you could rent 2 for that outside of London). Used cars are more expensive. Health insurance is a total bitch these days, at around £400 a month for a crock of shit. Groceries are expensive too. Not comparing this to anywhere near Londond obviously. That place is hell. I'm an ex-pat Brit in the US. I've been here since 1991. I ran a successful business in the UK during the late '80's. I've run a successful business here too, and have done for the past 25 years. I don't think that you've ever run any kind of legitimate business in the US, or in the UK. You're full of crap ... . Dude, I live and run a small business (just me) in the US and I am also an expat. Are US. Corporation Taxes not some of the highest in the world? Then on top of that you need to pay for your own healthcare (and for your wife and kids). Rent in SLC for example is over $1100 for a decent, small apartment. You can rent an apartment in Manchester or Liverpool for £400-500. Convert nearly any product in a US supermarket to £ and You will realise that you will never pay that in the U.K for a comparative product. For example a loaf of bread is $3 minimum, you would never pay £2.23 for any load of bread in the U.K. More like £1.50 max. |

I am doing a little experiment here to prove a point. Make $40k, no family to spend money on, no credit card, no debts, own everything, save 50% of salary. Will shortly move into motorhome and go off grid before everything goes boom in 2018. Cost of living then is VERY low. Also have a lockup with 5 years + supply of everything you'd need in that time. Semi prepper I suppose. Better of than most will be by this time next year... |

Now make much less than half that and have never saved more and lived more cheaply. Still enjoy supporting local restaurants or farmers markets but the days of me giving ANYTHING I don't have to, to corporations is over. No national chain or store gets a dime from me. All of these boycott this and that movements are fairly easy, I already was. |

I am doing a little experiment here to prove a point. I'm currently making more and my wife works..I went from making under $56k about 7 years ago fresh from dropping out of grad school. Every time I've gotten a pay bump the poorer we got thanks to going off assistance, through increased tax rates, and finally not qualifying for any credits or decent deductibles. This is probably the first year we won't owe an extra $10k over our joint tax returns over our combined 1 exception. It truly has been eye opening how much the government hates the middle class. I still have a shit ton of student loans left that I can barely afford even though I'm making more than double what I made just a few years ago and it's fucking ridiculous. I own a modest home in the suburbs and commute about 2 hours in the summer up to 5 hours in the winter every damn day. Success is more work than a lot of people are willing to pay.
